Sergeant John Basilone served in the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines of the 1st Marine Division during the Guadalcanal campaign. During the battle for Hnderson Field while the Japanese were attacking countless positions, Basilone took charge of 2 sections of heavy machine guns. He valiant fought off frontal attacks by the Japanese using his machine guns, while the Japanese blasted him with grenades and mortar fire.
When one of Basilone's sections gun crews were put out of action, he placed it back in action under continual fire, repaired another and took personal command of it. When the ammunition was critically low and the supply lines were cut off, Basilone ran through hostile lines under fire to get more ammunition.
Basilone is one of the most decorated men of the United States Marine Corps and a legendary figure of the Pacific War. In February 1945, he was killed in action on the first day of the invasion of Iwo Jima, after he single-handedly destroyed an enemy blockhouse and led a Marine tank under fire safely through a minefield

Leaving safety, fame and a fiancé stateside to go to Iwo Jima which I think was among the most savage battles of WW2 is one of the bravest things I have ever heard of. I will never forget this guy.

Wished the Pacific had Mitchell Paige to get another marine from the 7th Marines like Basilone also a MOH recipient and stayed to fight in Cape Gloucester before being sent back to the states.
