- The grid was packed with riding talent for the 1987 San Marino 500cc Bike Grand Prix and the pressure was on Honda's Wayne Gardner as the season ran towards its end. Gardner was looking nervously across the grid at the improving Yamahas, ridden by Eddie Lawson and Randy Mamola in what was an epic encounter, which unfortunately ended badly for Freddie Spencer and Frankie Chili, who both sustained injury from big crashes.

Tadahiko Taira (Yamaha) and Sunji Yatsushiro (Honda) were also making inroads into the points and Brits Ron Haslam, Roger Burnett, and Niall Mackenzie, usually proved competitive. Then there was Freddie Spencer (Honda), an enigma if ever there was one. He had had a devastatingly disappointing season, with crashes galore but had since demonstrated that he was capable of getting on the pace.

I still have this race video in my Duke collection on VHS ...Freddy, although already suffering , was never the same after that accident
it was an awful crash for Freddie and his persistent wrist problems shortened what was a fantastic career.
So many bikes in a moto GP race ! That was mad. Inceridible atmosphere. True sport
Thank you for sharing, post more please!
I was there ! :)

Imao, compared to today races and overall drive, this looks true, MotoGP drove looks a fake, I don't know if you can understand me..
Moto GP is fake compared to these guys ! ..... there is so many easy ride features on a modern machine, these bikes were on the edge, almost out of control.... you had to have real skill to race these, man and machine, no BS electronics !!
