Having lived with someone for 40 years who is involved in cat rescue I think you've been very lucky to have got off so lightly, especially with a kitten.
Always something happening. I'd had a cat knock my model of Fenchurch off a table breaking the chimney. I wasn't pleased. Glad to see you've got it back on track :)
Bloomin' vandals! Jokes aside, I think it's a great video to show the ups & downs, plus a snippet of family life. I know the layout will look amazing and will look forward to seeing it at an exhibition.
Oh dear George. What a despondent face. BUT equally what a lovely cat. Now I am really looking forward to seeing what you are doing for Christmas. I might have to recycle last years video as it had lots of snow and modelling snow is very messy and I’m a bit busy on other projects this year!!
Huge fan of your work George and it’s nice to know I’m not the only person modelling the TR with a small child who likes to belt out a bit of ‘I like to move it, move it!’
Great video George - good reaction to the disaster and as someone has said, never work with children and animals! Looking forward to the Christmas project (I'm doing a working 009 loop to go on top of the Christmas cake - virtually finished, getting the rails to go round such a tight radius was a challenge!) - and also looking forward to the Moss Hunt - great that you want to take me up on the challenge I suggested after seeing your last video - keep up the good work
Bless him, he'll learn! He just wants to be involved! Glad you were able to effect repairs, but hey he'll make sure you always have something to work on! Cheers comrade, love your work.
George, I enjoy your videos. This pensioner is learning from them. I have five cats, all rescues, three are just entering their "teens". I think you got off lucky. I do everything I can to isolate my kitties from the trains. That was equally true of when I had a toddler. The truth is in looking back those years before she started school were the best of times. Teaching her to read and color and so many other things. Not much time for the trains in those years, Funny, they waited for me and it seemed i had developed useful skills (like patience) in the meanwhile. I looking forward to the next video. Bob (in the US)
Ooh, I feel your pain. We got a new pair of kittens last year and had a similar kerfuffle as they climbed on my N scale layout. I haven't started scenery, but they knocked a lot of my rolling stock onto the floor. One of the cats likes to gnaw on plastic bags, so all of those detail parts and unassembled kits that were still in their bags had a bunch of teeth marks in them. Our previous cat scratched the spines of my record collection, so our arguments were not isolated. Cats are now banned from my train room too; I need a place to have my hobbies where they aren't disrupted (besides, when I do start working on scenery, I don't want them to get paint and glue all mixed into their coats). It took quite a while before I was able to forgive them.
New to your channel, When i saw the thumbnail I thought i was looking at a Garden railway! "What kind of brain dead monster would vandalize a... ... ... Dont be mad at him." On fiddle yards in the US. I have used the term. But typically here at least, i use the term "Staging yard" for any hidden storage tracks meant to be set up before and after an op session, and "Fiddle track" (not yard typically) for a typically unscenic track where cars are manipulated by hand DURING an operating session.
@@GWilliamsonModels absolutely! I think Americans like myself just have a tendency towards the literal, “I fiddle with stuff on this track - Trains are staged and ready on this track”
Thanks for the 'real life' video showing some of the challenges around us that get in the way of modelling! Stuff happens and although the damage was frustrating it was very minor compared to the damage a small kitten could do if it really tried. Closed door policy sounds a good lesson learnt.
From day one I knew my cat Veda would 100% be up and on the layout, I didn't try to stop her I just encouraged her to lie down on the grass away from the tracks, now she just lies there and watches the trains go by :) Oh, but be careful with any exposed cork underlay, it's their perfect "scratching post!"
Compared to what my cats have done, you got off pretty well. One Z type guards van kit, a very expensive D3 class model and a BR K1 class have all taken the tumble! Almost lost a Hornby peckett too! Fantastic video mate, keep up the great work!
American here, in the US, a fiddle yard is similar to what we call staging/a staging yard. I believe they serve the same purpose of hiding/storing trains off of the sceniced part of a layout.
For sale: one Kitten, well-behaved, obedient. Golden in colour. Possibly a Welsh slate mine worker in previous life.... As for the interruptions, I am also blessed with a daughter who loves to get involved with my filming...
Never work with children or animals, and I think both of them have you wrapped around their little fingers (or paws). Normally slick videos turned to chaos. Love it 😊
Cats and model railways…….NO! I had an exhibition layout of Blagdon on the GWR.. wife’s cat literally destroyed it. Love your content Cheers from Canada Bob
Omg I see I’m not the only one with cat issues haha Bessi our cat did the same on my on30 micro layout… I threatened the air fryer and it hasn’t happened since 😂 so that’s my recommendation… cheap threats hahaha. Thanks for another great vid 👍
Very lucky with the damage you endured! I had my cat (Oreo) jump onto my layout, knock a locomotive off my layout and onto a concrete floor. But can't hold it against him... much!
I know where you're coming from, George. This is why I store my model railway bits and pieces away from my cat because I know that he won't be able to leave his paws alone. He's inquisitive by nature, just like Rupert. I can see Rupert becoming the channel's mascot 🤣.
Think this video is an absolute hoot. Mirrors the old actors adage of never working with children or animals. There must be dozens of layout builders out there who know exactly what you are feeling cos it's happened to them!. Best of luck.
I love my animals but this is the stuff of my nightmares I build model kits (and would also love to build a model railway when I've got the space) so I'm well experienced in the feeling of utter horror when something falls to the floor, thus if I ever have a cat they will not be allowed in the model room without parental supervision lol That said you definitely got off lightly, the coach would hopefully be an easy fix and you could easily redo the fence as intending or incorporate the little fluffball's escapade into the layout, maybe adding some workmen around it as though they're inspecting/repairing the fence
Sorry to hear about your cat distroying the layout. I have a 009 layout on the go now. And it leave on the floor of my room. Taking up personal space. And my over ten year old cat hasnt sat on it yet. Or my dog. And that would be a nightmare. No worrys about your daughter being heard. And didnt know your other cat passed.
😮It's nice to share the hobby with those you love 😂... Rupert obviously felt the scene needed to look a bit more haggard 😂 Tbf, through the camera lens the damaged look really suits the scene, like a run down old line. But i know what you mean about something playing on your mind
Rupert didn't look guilty at all. He obviously sleeps well, probably eats and drinks and has a ball, like everything is just fine. You just move it, move it.
I feel your pain. I don’t have any pets to damage my layouts. But I have inadvertently damaged stock and scenery myself. I feel the emotions you’re experiencing. What’s that about never work with animals or children?
Well, a small cat will obviously go for 009. But the wheel of karma will turn, when the day and hour comes for you to take him to the vet to have his little lifestyle change made …
Sounds like you need to enlist the help of James Hilton for twisted armatures of Oak trees! Really enjoy your content but if you need a little break from content to repair things or just reflect on the progress you’ve made, no-one will begrudge you that 👍
I think you have misunderstood your kittens intentions. He was showing you the opportunity for a track side cameo of workmen repairing a storm damaged fence 😂
I also appreciate the behind the scenes. The fiddle yard too lol. I’m one of the American viewers, but I think I was curious more because I hadn’t seen it yet…whether through not watching that or something else, idk. Ty for going over it!
A friend of mine spent a lot of money, like stupid money on speakers for his amazing music system only to have his cats claw them ro pieces on the first night he had them...
It’s funny what they do. Every morning g when I go to feed Rupert, he’s collected hair bobbles from around the house and filled his bowl with them. There were 12 this morning!
Having lived with someone for 40 years who is involved in cat rescue I think you've been very lucky to have got off so lightly, especially with a kitten.
Yeah he’ll be ok, once his energy calms and he can go out hunting
Your little surprise appearance of your little one was so adorable, her little singing voice made me smile and aughty Rupert.
Glad you enjoyed it, she’s always close by (and her older sister!)
Always something happening. I'd had a cat knock my model of Fenchurch off a table breaking the chimney. I wasn't pleased. Glad to see you've got it back on track :)
Yes it’s a horrible feeling when you see it, but I’ll get it sorted soon enough
Bloomin' vandals! Jokes aside, I think it's a great video to show the ups & downs, plus a snippet of family life. I know the layout will look amazing and will look forward to seeing it at an exhibition.

Fair enough. This one isn’t anything to do with Christmas, more of a ‘special’ build

Great video George - good reaction to the disaster and as someone has said, never work with children and animals! Love the sound of the cake railway! This ‘Christmas’ build isn’t actually a Christmas build atall, more of a ‘special’ one off build - you’ll see

@GWilliamsonModels perfect
Your great skill in building seems to be matched by your great skill in repair. Please leave something over for the rest of us.

Thanks for the 'real life' video showing some of the challenges around us that get in the way of modelling! Stuff happens and although the damage was frustrating it was very minor compared to the damage a small kitten could do if it really tried. Closed door policy sounds a good lesson learnt.
Not a problem, this is simply the reality from behind the scenes, you just don’t see it on other videos because I edit it out!

Kitty jumped up as high as possible, got tangled in the fence, and fell totally terrified to the ground. He'll never do that again.
