  • When we compare between two things, or distinguish one thing from a group of things, we use comparative and superlative adjectives, respectively. We do this all the time in English, but how to do so in Arabic? That’s what we cover in this video lesson.

0:16 - What are comparative & superlative adjectives?

Comparative adjectives are used to compare two nouns and can be used to say something is better (comparative of superiority), worst (comparative of inferiority), or like (comparative of equality) the other. The methods to do so in Arabic aren’t so much different from those in English.
In English we add -er to the end of the adjective, and in Arabic we put the adjective in the form of أفعل. For example, bigger and أكبر
We also use additional words when comparing, such as more or أكثر, less أقل, and like مثل.
    A few examples are:
هذا الكتاب أكثر تكلفة من ذاك
    هي طويلة مثل اختها
    الحمار أقل سرعة من الحصان
As for superlative adjectives, these are used to distinguish one noun from a group of other nouns. We do so in English by adding -est to the end of the adjective, such as biggest, or by using the words “most” and “least”. Again, similar methods are used in the Arabic language to form superlative adjectives.
These methods are thoroughly explained in the video lesson and include:
    الأفعل
    أفعل + اضافة
    الأكثر
    الأقل
Being familiar with the formation of such adjectives is an essential skill to participate in everyday conversation. That’s why in this lesson we cover in detail how to use each method in Arabic, provide examples for each way, and also include a quiz at the end.
