I like how the pounding of the waves hitting the ship gives a loud bang every now and again as if the ship is playing music. Haunting, but interesting.
She was built as the SS American in 1939, possibly the last ship to be classed as an ocean liner and not a cruise ship. I have travelled on her three times as the RHMS Australis and SS Australis in 1967 68 and 69 owned by Chandris Lines. She was elegant, her main dining room was stunning, built two heights high with a mezzanine on both sides built on the above sun deck. Her demise is terribly sad especially as her last ten years she was sold several times, all to companies that could not afford to give her the life she deserved. She became the USS West Point during WW11, travelled safely taking over ten thousands troops to their destination and safely. In 1965 she was bought by the Greek shipping company Chandris Lines where she safely once again took thousand of passengers from the UK, Rotterdam and Greece to a new life in Australia and New Zealand. She did that nobly for 26 years then came her sad decline at the hands of other buyers. She became the Italis, Noga, and the American Star, all disastrous sales as she never quite made it back to the ocean except for one failed attempt…..her last one. Today when you see a Celebrity ship 🛳️ think of the Australis, those two X X on her funnels are the same Xs you see on Celebrity cruises to this day. captains and all major officers are still Greek, this was the deal that was made between Royal Caribbean who own Celebrity Cruises when selling Chandris Lines to them almost years ago. May her memory live on forever.
@citizen23606 I know, I followed the old blog keeping track of the wrecks decay, it's just a big rust field underwater now. At least we have videos like this to remember the atmospheric beauty of the wreck.
@@theincrediblehulk5797 sadly its under water now and you can only see some glimpses of it on satellite imagery as getting to witness the wreck under the water is somewhat impossible due to the strong tides
In the ship's heyday, under United States Lines control, the first class lounge was a sight to see. Nice polished brass entryway and a mezzanine above line with intricate brass railings. Very Art Deco, as the ship was built in that era. What was left of the lounge in this video is seen at 9:04, just a shell of what it once was.
Very sad to see this once great liner slowly crumbling away, although she looks very stately. How lovely to see the light shining through her portholes , as if she's about to set sail again....♥️
It's sad that she stranded and rusted away. But if it didn't happen, she had been torn down by a soulless indian scrapping company. This way, she kept at least something of her old glory for 10 more years.
Actually it was slated to be refitted/restored and become a 5-Star Hotel Ship in Phuket, Thailand. You would've actually been able to stay on it today, had it not had its towing mishap.
