Just One Victory was one of my younger Sisters favorite songs, she loved Todd. She had lot's of health issues and that song helped her get through. She eventually lost and passed away 12 years ago two day's after her 57th birthday. I always cry when I hear it...
"Hello It's Me"definitely in the top 10 of 70s songs IMO. I've heard it probably a million times and it always sounds fresh while sounding dated at the same time. Huge talent and master at his craft. Thanks to all you young people for keeping it alive. Maybe this type of music will dominate the airwaves again someday. A girl can hope.
I love this guy and his music - he's an amazing singer-songwriter, a superb producer for many other acts and one of the greatest of classic white soul singers. Also, a genuinely literate rock star - his grasp of words and literary techniques is as striking as that of Peter Gabriel. It's plainly visible if you'd watch or read an interview with him, he's very conscious of what he's doing.
One of the best artists of the era, for my money. A brilliant writer, singer, and multi instrumentalist, beyond his famous producing career. Also, you'll need to check out his amazing progressive rock band Utopia.
Todd Rundgren, one of the biggest perfectionists in music, and a genius at it too. He raised Steven Tyler's daughter, Liv as his own with Steven's ex, Bebe Buell, who kinda got around in the 70s.
The "Nearly Human" album (one of his greatest, and a kind of comeback for him) was largely inspired by the pain of losing custody of Liv Tyler and the separation from Bebe Buell - and the road to rebirth. I knew when I first heard it that it was a deeply personal record, about crisis and reorientation, but it was only many years later that I read an interview with Liv Tyler and found out more about the background.
@@lauraallen55 "Unloved Children" is unmistakably about the pain of ruptured families, very compassionate, and an incredibly powerful song. The guitar solo on that one (the only solo he credited himself for on the entire album) packs a world of pain and defiance into, like, half a minute of playing.
Nice reaction man…..’this dude really knew whatbhecwas doing…’ 😂. Indeed he did/does. Yhe guy is a genius…one of the most underrated artists of our time. Just One Victory was Todd's signature closing song for many years. You probably wouldn't be able to react to it but The Midnight Special UA-cam channel recently posted Todd's original Utopia lineup version of Black Maria. It's amaxing.
Lee take my advice. One night. Put on the headphones and listen to A Wizard a True Star and get ready. Mind blowing wild man freak show of amazing music and then poof. Pop, R&B. Hard rock. He made that Lp in response to being called a pop song writer after Something/Anything . The first tune on side one Todd says in his lyrics. ‘I only want to see if you’ll give up on me’ and he meant it. To his fans. Like as in, are you guys coming along for this ride with me? He pushed boundaries like you won’t believe Lee. I’m telling you. It’s a mod art/ classic art masterpiece all rolled into one. Oh and Todd don’t care about drums. Just there to hold down the beat. 😊
Every word you say is true! I love seeing a newbie's reaction to Todd. Especially somebody like Lee who knows goid music. I hope he digs into Todd's prog albums with Utopia and solo Initiation and Faithful.
Todd was way ahead of his time. I saw him at the Aire Crown Theater in Chicago and he performed solo with backing tracks instead of a band. He was great but half the crowd didn't know how to react.
I was wondering when Todd would pop up on your channel. Yay!! Since folks here are suggesting other Todd songs, I will too: Can We Still Be Friends, We Gotta Get You a Woman, Love is the Answer
A Wizard... one of my all-time favorites. A tour de force! Considered "experimental" at the time and remained influential for years. I think Todd is under-appreciated. Amazing musician, songwriter and producer. Semi-related, please check out Laura Nyro. Totally unique and influential musician and songwriter. She deserves more attention. Died too young.
Please give your daughter a big birthday hug for me, birthdays should always be celebrated! So glad you hit these two songs from Todd, they're two favorites of mine. He's brilliant. The Something/Anything album is a two record set, the first three sides he played all the instruments, singing, producing, engineering. On the last side, which includes Hello It's Me, he gathered a group of incredible studio musicians and put together some amazing music. As far as his producing, George Harrison chose Rundgren to continue producing Badfinger's Straight Up album when he was called away mid-production. Handpicked by a Beatle, can't get better than that!
Great 70's music....before computers, cell phones, cable tv. Most of us had 4-6 channels of TV, radio and movies, so music was big and the artists had real things to say. People talked more too, not introverted into their electronic devices like today.
Ned here for the Todd. A key figure and influence on Todd was songwriter / performer Laura Nyro. They were fans of each others music too. She wrote a bunch of hits for the 5th Dimension and Three Dog Night, died young unfortunately.
Love this one so much. The chords at 1:55 and 4:01-03 get me every time. Yeah, the horns add so much. Definitely read up about Todd. Seriously multi-talented. Other mellow tunes by Todd: "Can We Still Be Friends" and "I Saw the Light." Todd also did some of his tunes with Daryl Hall and his house band (Live From Daryl's House). Cheers!
“something.anything “ is a great double album. On the first three sides Todd plays all the instruments and does all the voices. The last side - including “Hello It’s Me” was apparently recorded all at once - that is - with all musicians and vocalists performing at the same time.
Todd is a big Beatles fan - he's part of the American Beatlemania generation - and in 1980 he and his band Utopia released an outstanding set of Fab Four pastiche songs, covering practically their entire career and expertly mimicking the sound of the Liverpool boys in various phases, while the lyrics are unmistakably Todd. :) A song like "Hoi Poloi" is as close as anyone could get to the sound of "Strawberry Fields Forever" or "Fixing a Hole" without simply covering those songs. The album is called "Deface the Music" - highly recommended!
@@jonathanroberts8981 I didn't know that, will have to check it out! :) The cover of the next Utopia album, "Swing to the Right" (1982), was adapted from a famous photo of young people burning Beatles albums in the Bible Belt, in 1966 - but with the Beatles record changed out for the cover of the Utopia album itself, making it a fun "eternal regression " visual effect.
Hey L33! "Hello, It's Me" is one of my all-time favorite songs. I've loved it since the first time I heard it on the radio back in 1973. I really like the long album version. Peace.
The first three sides of Something/Anything are all Todd. This tune is on the fourth side, where Todd invited musicians to come to a NY studio and play the songs off the cuff, without really knowing them. It’s a wonderful piece of music.

Todd's an extraordinary musician. He did an album where, from my understanding, all the instruments were him, including all the vocals. It's called The Hermit of Mink Hollow. You'd think it would be fairly unspectacular yet it's extraordinarily intricate and doesn't lack a bit of virtuosity. I must say that I was stunned the first time I heard it. Still am!
I saw Todd & Utopia in concert - Toronto 1973 - and it was the first time I had witnessed such an unusual presentation.....and not because of the pre-concert doobie. Todd came out by himself singing, accompanied by pre-recorded music where he played all the instruments. Took us a while to figure it out. Utopia came out for the second half. In the end it was a memorable & great concert. Happy 3rd Birthday to your daughter Lee! 🎂🎉
I saw him at Temple U Ambler Campus around that time. It was an open air amphitheater. There were in addition to Todd two other keyboard players, which I thought was pretty unusual.
Open My Eyes with Nazz is a banger. But Just One Victory was a revelation! Had not heard it before, so here I am now; old guy hearing it for the first time. 😅

Todd Rundgren is the genius producer who made that motorbike sound with the guitar for Meat Loaf's "Bat Out of Hell".
Also produced proto-punk band the New Yprk Dolls, The Tubes and many others. :)
