The red dragon was the concept of a dragon that would spawn in the overworld. It was called the red dragon because it was a dragon that was red. The idea was first teased by Notch, then when Notch stepped down, Jeb said it was still in development. The most recent news has been Dinnerbone saying that it is still a concept they hope to put into the game in the future.
Another idea was that it would live in Extreme Hills biome. Since we now have insane mountains with huge caverns I can definitely see this working now.
Idea: teh Red Dragón would live beyond thy Sculk Gate

After all my bad experiences with normal glass, I always fear when seeing people handle obsidian
I'm no rock expert but I don't see anything wrong with handling cooled magma.

'Red dragon' refers to a red dragon with prominent scale textures that was in.. I think buried in the files of, like, the game's alpha versions. It's a cut enemy. It shares the ender dragon's model, so presumably was reskinned to create said ender dragon.

Aww, the last one about the realistic sniffers was very cute.
The "Red Dragon" was an old idea for a sort-of harder version of the Ender Dragon, it was like one of those old playground rumors, where people would say things like, "If you head (however many, probably in the thousands) you'll find the Red Dragon!" Eventually people added it into mods/modpacks, which realized the idea!
Fun fact: Making a nether portal is a worse hell than the nether itself
