@KBAFourthtime The character Schwartz was the one who issued the "triple-dog dare". The actor Scott Schwartz played Flick, who got his tongue stuck to the flagpole.
i seen this movie on the big screne when it came out . i loved it then and i love it now . i have it on the tbs channel and it runs 24 hours on xmas eve /day . love it .
I love the expressions on their faces as soon as the kid adds the words DOG to i dare u!! lmao...:O :O oh oh can't forget TRIPLE dog dare u!!..wooooahhh wooaahh!!
For the scene in which Flick's tongue sticks to the flagpole, a hidden suction tube was used to safely create the illusion that his tongue had frozen to the metal.
This had me laughing so hard. I know you're not supposed to laugh at other people, especially children’s misery, but honestly. That must be the dumbest attempt to save face xD Gawd. He screamed like a little piglet going to the butchery. And then the bell rang. I’m so faving this clip!

this is one of my favorite movies. Whatever happpened to Benjamin "Bob" Clark who was credited for directing and writing the script with Jean Shepherd? is it true he was killed in a car accident after being struck by a drunk illegal alien driver in california?
If you take a look at this slideshow "Santa's First Stop ~ Euclid Beach Band ~ also here on youtube - you will see a couple shots of Higbees which was the store they were using in the Downtown Clevleland shots of The Christmas Story ~ PS ~ How many Clevelanders think the chinese restaurant scene was taken from Chung Wah's down on 40th? I do
@3jacksmusic I remember when they were filming on Public Square! The lamp posts had been changed and all the old cars parked there. I also think that you are right about the restaurant.
I never looked at poles the same when I watched this when I was younger, usually I'd cringe when this came on. But it happened to me once almost, and it was just the tip of my tongue, which I immediately just backed off, once it started to get frozen, and maan, it hurted a little, and it tasted 'metal-y'. :P
lol "the exact exchange and nuance of phrase in this ritual is very important." "Schwartz created a slight breach of etiquette by skipping the triple dare...."
@floatingtrains The movie is "boring" because TNT keep airing it for 24 constitutive hours every Christmas. Everyone has seen it at least 100 times, and will probably see it another 100 times before TNT stops airing it.
OMG!! i love Christmas year b/c of this movie i love it sooo much ppl who hate it honestly r crazyyy...i really wanna know is it true about sticking ur tongue on a tree during the snow season...scary
@RockinxXxKzxXxWolf Yes apparently there is a strange force stopping that kid from backing down a triple dog dare theres nothing really holding you so i dont see why they cant just say no lol.
Getting your tongue stick to metal in the winter hurts sooo much,. I did it once as a kid and will never do it again, it wasn't as bad as this scene but still bad enough.
well he lied... double dog dare usually means if he does it you do it after triple dog dare is just when 3 people dare and will do the same if he does.
@Xeroximitus First off, you're not supposed to "Quadruple-Dog Dare" someone without a "Quadruple Dare". Then, I suppose you could follow with a Quintuple Dare.
This is in St. Catherines Ontario, on the corner of Gibson and Fitzgerald streets The school has been converted to a shelter for abused women I believe and the school yard now is full of houses. Google Map it. You'd be surprised.
this scene, and the one afterwards after they go back inside when the teacher asked where that kid was, is why full grown adults are generally better people than kids are, despite what christians say. full grown adults would at least try to help him, or go get help, not just sweep the problem under the rug like those kids did and just leave him out there like that. that kid should've refused to do it, no matter how much he was dared to do it, and no matter what was said.
Can't wait to watch the 24 hour marathon on Christmas eve :D this is the best Christmas movie ever :)
great movie, this school is in St Cathrines ,Ontario,Canada, filmed in 1984
"come back! dont leave me come back!" best movie ever!
I like this movie and scene despite the fact i watch this like 3 times every christmas on TBS for as long as I can remember
no i'm from St Catharines, Canada... and it was filmed here, but only the scenes with the school in it
@KBAFourthtime

Hearing that child scream and panic was a horrible experience.
I love the expressions on their faces as soon as the kid adds the words DOG to i dare u!! lmao...:O :O oh oh can't forget TRIPLE dog dare u!!..wooooahhh wooaahh!!
"A Christmas Story" airs ALL DAY Christmas Day on TBS... DON'T MISS IT!

I remember watching this as a kid. Was horrified.
Now-- I can't stop giggling.

A lot of people think this movie is 'boring,' just because it's old, but that's because they have a bad sense of humor.
"go on smartass n do it!"
i love this movie =]
I live in Indiana and this is the most funniest part of the mov- actually all the things that are in the movie was funny
I really like this movie cant wait till tommorow when it goes on.
I love Raplh. His expression at this scene made me laugh so hard.
He did, at first. That's when he discovered it was stuck.
"I don't know...THE BELL RANG".... LOL!
My Dad went to that school, He showed me and my Mom. The pole's still there too!
7 people had their tongues frozen to poles.
lol "the exact exchange and nuance of phrase in this ritual is very important." "Schwartz created a slight breach of etiquette by skipping the triple dare...."
" Dont leave me, come back""!
Oh man. TRIPLE DOG DARE. NO ONE backs out from it.
@thatepiccactus Thats Flick getting his tounge stuck to the pole, not schwartz
1:34 Is that Scut Farkus?

"Where's Flick?" -- Classic.
And that, children, is why you don't stick your tongues to poles in the middle of winter. ^_^
THAT'S CUZ YOU KNOW IT'LL STICK.
Not to be confused with the character Schwartz, it was Scott Schwartz.
@RockinxXxKzxXxWolf Yes apparently there is a strange force stopping that kid from backing down a triple dog dare theres nothing really holding you so i dont see why they cant just say no lol.
This is a classic.
Getting your tongue stick to metal in the winter hurts sooo much,.
I did it once as a kid and will never do it again, it wasn't as bad as this scene but still bad enough.
I tried doing that to my little brother one year but, he knew what would happen because of this movie and didn't do it. What a fail...xD
that's my favorite part in this movie
they truly trolled Flick, left him hanging...friends eh loooool
I wish I saw this movie before I licked the swings. Well, at least I had more freedom of movement than that poor guy.
This part always scared the shit out of me.
"Flick? Flick who?"
i wonder if that one kid ignored the triple dog dare and the other kid said quadruple dog dare?
The other kids were so funny because they didn't know what the heck to do and they were just standing there
How did they manage to safely remove his tongue from that filthy pole?
I'm goin'! I'm goin'!
@A1l2l2e2n4 then how ARE you supposed to do it?
Yeah theres no doubt about it it really does stick
this is a classic!
This scene could have been even funnier if Flick had tried to pull his tongue off the pole himself.
i was messin with ya man
well he lied... double dog dare usually means if he does it you do it after triple dog dare is just when 3 people dare and will do the same if he does.
THE BELL Rang hahahahahahahahaha

That "strange force" is called "losing face". A lot of us who have Y chromosomes ---males of ALL ages, in other words--- have to contend
@CommanderLightning
"I'm going!"
Hurry someone get the heater!
STUCK!
@violentchihuahua I saw a play version of this movie, and what happend next wasn't pretty.
I once got a kid to do this..it was just as funny if not funnier then this LOL
Corey Haim said 'bout this, "It was just 'great.'"
I say not as great as when Jeff Daniels did it in Dumb and Dumber.
It's Supposed to take place in Illinois I think.
a classic :D
