Today, Christian and Anthony discuss two different Omega Speedmaster models - the standard Professional and the Moon Phase in Blue.
First and foremost, we have the Omega Speedmaster professional, the classic 42mm watch modeled after the piece that went to the moon. It's been a staple of the brand's collection ever since that triumphant moon landing, and its understated, classic design makes it easy to see why. It runs the manual winding caliber 1861 and features just 50 meters of water resistance. Depending on the strap combination, it's one of the single most versatile watches on the market period. On the bracelet, it's sporty, but on a croc strap it's practically a dress watch. And its rich history both as a racing watch and, eventually, as the Moon Watch, makes it one of the best buys on the market.
Christian's pick, however, is something entirely different and off the wall. We have the Omega Speedmaster Co-Axial Master Chronometer Moonphase, a 44mm beast of a watch with a rich blue dial and bezel and, interestingly enough, a moonphase complication. In this way, it almost kind of plays into the Speedy's moon-based heritage without being modeled after the original moonwatch, but while still introducing a level of complication not often seen in Speedmasters. It's an automatic, rather than manually wound watch and being able to see the movement through the back of the case is a treat for the eyes. Omega is also the only brand to certify their watches to the METAS standard, a higher level than even the Chronometer standard.

This Moonphase has been so accurate and precise. I have been wearing it on my wrist since the pandemic began and it has not gained no more than 80 seconds now only off by 3 seconds. Sometimes gaining or losing 1 second in 3-7 days.

The Blue Side of the Moon Aventurine Moonphase is REALLY worth a look, Christian. And the 990X Omega movements are absolute powerhouses! Si hairspring, proprietary Ti alloy balance wheel, 54 jewels, column wheel with vertical clutch, DLC coated gears and DLC coated twin barrels, bi-directional winding rotor with ceramic ball bearings.
Mine has maintained +.5 spd on wrist with no winder (sharing time with my Seamaster) since March 1st.
Fantastic job on this video! Your content just keeps getting better!!!

Hi Theo, the moonphase is 10 ATM, not 5 ATM. This is due to the special SS case. The other ceramic cases are 5 ATM. As for moonwatch, they are 5 ATM.

@Steve this is the third time I've tried to reply. I attached a link to a photo, and I guess it automatically deletes my comment because of that. I own the moonphase and I 100% promise it's 100m water resistant. It is literally printed on the back of the case. I can send you a photo if you like. Sales associates have no idea what they are talking about most of the time.

Old thread, but the OP was correct. The steel moon phase automatic versions of the Speedmaster are listed on Omega’s website as having 100m of WR, as are the gold and platinum versions of this watch. This is notably different from the Blue Side of the Moon in ceramic, or the Speedmaster Super Racing, or any of the DSOM versions, all of which are only 50m water resistant. Not sure why Omega went to the trouble to add WR specifically to the steel moon phase version of the Speedmaster… but it’s a welcome additional feature to have.

Have the exact model atm on my wrist (on bracelet) - awesome watch! It doesn't wear big at all, and the moonphase complication is something special, and relatively unique from watch collectors/admirers (how often do you see someone wearing a watch with a moonphase complication?)

Owning a 20 year old Speedmaster MK 40 I was impressed by how many complications Omega was able to put into this small watch. Yes it may look a bit more crowded than the current co axial moon phase, but it is also way smaller.

  • @Nexus.Achiles

I own a Racing Co-ax white dial. Big watch at 44.25 mm, sits right at the limit on my 18cm/7in flat wrist (6.5cm wide). Not too thick at 15mm with the redesigned caseback. Great modern automatic movement (column wheel, vertical clutch, METAS, 60h power reserve). Very legible and usable as a chrono.
Purists tend to ignore Speedy's non related to space missions, but they forget it was a car racing watch well before it was worn by astronauts.

The other cool “story” on that Omega Moonphase is the laser-printed “boot print” that was made from the famous photo Neil Armstrong took of his “first step”. Omega placed that “boot print” on the moon phase disc over the “Sea of Tranquility” and you can view it with a loupe. It’s really a cool detail.

The 44.25mm Co-axial models are great for those with medium to bigger wrists. My friend has a 7.6" wrist, and purchased an excellent condition pre-owned Moonwatch Co-axial 311.30.44.50.01.002. It's got that same flexible style as the original Speedy Pro, but in a size that he feels better suits him, plus he really likes it being automatic. It's got the addition of a date, while not for purists, is very functional and he finds it a must. It's also got the bonus of 100m water resistance. It's too bad they don't make that variant any more. It does wear pretty well on my 7.25" wrist as well, but I think 42mm chronos are just perfect on mine.

Honestly I think this is what they did with the 321 "Ed White". It is the classic Speedmaster with a column wheel movement, the use of precious metals, the aluminium bezel replaced by a ceramic one, applied indices and logo, and a display caseback and decorated movement. I think it is part of their decision to take the entire brand more upmarket.
