  • Kamoka Pearl specializes in farming Tahitian pearls. It harvests the pearls in a way that keeps the oysters alive. Josh, the owner, gently opens the oyster and carefully removes the pearl, then replaces it with a pearl blank. The pearls are tumbled gently in rock salt to clean them and drilled with a specialized pearl drill to be used to create jewelry.

I wonder what happens if the pearl isn't removed. Does it just stay there forever, growing bigger until it kills the oyster, or will the oyster eventually reject it? I can't find an answer to this on Google, but maybe it's because I don't know how to word the question. Either way, it seems that of you can remove it without killing the oyster, you'd be doing it a favor.

If they are not killing the oysters, supporting their business is not just ethical but also eco-restorative. Seashells and pearls are sequestered carbon from oceans, invigorating more of that is the equivalent of planting trees on land.

@@aleenaprasannan2146 Pearls are made by marine oysters and freshwater mussels as a natural defence against an irritant such as a parasite entering their shell or damage to their fragile body. ... This creates a material called nacre, also known as mother-of-pearl, which encases the irritant and protects the mollusc from it.

      @aleenaprasannan2146 3 роки тому +35

@@liannislam9006 You are right about the irritant, but wrong about the parasite. Parasites or shell borers don't just sit still for a long duration for the nacre to slowly envelop them. The parasite is not what gets covered by nacre. The production of nacre is a defense mechanism triggered by a physical damage or irritation to its mantle area. That physical damage can happen when shell boring parasites bore it shell and damage the mantle. But still the nacre is not produced enveloping the parasite that caused the damage, but on the spot of the damage. It's like how a scab is formed on your skin or how an allergic pimple forms where you get a mosquito bite, the mosquito doesn't get enveloped by the pimple, does it?
That is also why, for artificially cultured pearls, a foreign object is placed as an irritant in the mantle, not parasites

@@jamescrud There is confirmation that extracting these Pearls safely from them is painful?
To my knowledge, before this method, these creatures were just made to die. Shells crushed and all is a normal practice to simply extract the pearl.
I find that practice wasteful. The creature would definitely feel pain from a hammer using that method if really "suffering" is to be questioned.
But so, too, does every creature feel pain when being chosen to slaughter to feed others.
The Point of this Particular Method is to be Less Wasteful, I thought.
So, if you are trying to undermine my thought process, which method would you prefer? The older method or this method in terms of extraction? Or is there a better method? If so, do link that. I'd love to learn more of it.
(And don't even go: The Best Method is to do Nothing at all. That's not the Point. The Point is the Best Method for Pearl Extraction. And, considering your concerns: The Best Method for Pearl Extraction that leads to Little to No Suffering.)

@@jamescrud Jewelry, symbolism, folklore, religion and Traditions have existed for a long time. Pearls are a facet of them, too. People won't just abandon them, their Culture, History, Past or Traditions because people like you think it's bad.
Again, mindlessly on about "suffering". We don't know much about the pain threshold of them. We can't presume they experience pain like humans, dogs, or anything. Different people even have different pain thresholds so it's safe to assume that creatures are different, too. Unless you got something on the study on bivalve pain then you're just trying hard for False Sanctimonious Points.
And if you're really on about the Suffering of Animals, again, Animals are Slaughtered Daily to feed other People and other Animals. Some of that doesn't even get fully used. Now, THAT'S WASTEFUL.
Go take your low-key "vegan" pushing agenda somwhere else. People eat what they want to eat. Humans are omnivores. Eat healthy and appropriate for you without forcing yourself mental and physiological trauma by going thru harsh fasting and dietary switching on a constant basis. [Sorry for anyone else reading this and if you are Vegans. Some people eat to their own desires silently and I'm tired of the other subliminal False Sanctimonious Statements that occur from others.]
And this _is_ a better practice than the typical one. (How did I know you'd go the "Don't do this practice at all" route?) Honestly, just don't even be here.
The Question was "which _of these_ is the better option". I don't think you can fully comprehend that.
Just leave because people are looking into better ways of Improving their Skills, Mastery, and Practices.
Your "All or Nothing" Attitude on this Matter is ridiculous.
FUN FACT: When eating shucked Oysters, they're still alive.

Oysters don't have a central nervous system; it's highly unlikely they can feel pain and they certainly can't feel emotions. No ethical quandary here.

Ginger, they keep these oysters tied to a string for their entire lives. They never get to roam free like what an oyster is supposed to do. On top of that they repeatedly introduce a foreign object which irritates the animal...for it's entire life. You think that's ethical?
Try and think about it a little.
