I play it both ways & I think it’s sounds better played with a plectrum… just my humble opinion. Great stuff!

I totally agree. I tend towards learning new basslines fingerstyle first to concentrate on the left hand. Then, I'll use the pick on the tunes that seem better suited for it. A few songs that come to my mind are Silly Love Songs and Welcome to the Jungle - totally different tunes. lol. Cheers!

@@MrBabyBoa Yes, it’s a completely different sound! When I started playing the bass guitar, using a pick was frowned upon. I never used a pick in the 90s, never. Until I watched a tutorial with one of my heroes JPJ explaining how to he played Whole Lotta Love & I noticed he was using a plectrum (as the British call them) as silly as this sounds: I figured if one of the greatest rock bassists uses a pick… so can I! The very first song I played live from start to finish with a pick was Whole Lotta Love and boy it sounded sooo much better than playing it with my fingers! (My bandmates were excited because it made the song sound 100% better) Now that I’m older and I listen to that song. I now wonder… how the Hell did I ever play that song with my fingers? The song was written to be played with a pick! Now JPJ plays a fairly simple riff (it’s an awesome riff) in the most difficult way. As I’m sure you know it can be played with a pick, the same notes with less sliding. However, I’m very much of the old-school mind to learn how to play it exactly like your heroes did! Once you’ve mastered the original way it was played then you can fool around playing all sorts of different ways! But again, it’s very important to learn it the way it was originally written. You’ll find that if you don’t play certain songs exactly as they were played originally it sounds different, regardless if you’re playing the same notes. (This is much more relevant for guitarists) Lol, so I’ve listened to how I used to play it with my fingers & it sounded terrible! So when beginners ask me if they should play with their fingers or a pick? I always answer by saying learn to play with both! If you’re serious about playing music for a living odds are you’ll be doing some session work & if you want to be on the first call list? You have to be able to play with four fingers and pick with your strumming hand.
