Nice job. The way I learned how small the internet made the world was by casually mentioning these cartoons on an old web "bulletin board" and promptly receiving a gracious E-mail from Mr. Deitch, saying that a friend had passed my comment along to him and adding that after living in Czechoslovakia for 30+ years it was nice to know he hadn't been completely forgotten!
I hated these shorts so much when I was younger and I still do! Now I’m curious how much Clint Clobber would get charged for his crimes
@@PastaObesityClint would definitely be on death row for animal torture.
I hate Clint Clobber too. The times when his face turns red when gets mad scared me on the inside as a kid. I still hate him because animal cruelty is not funny.
Probably one of the best videos that dives into the Gene Deitch era. The jokes are funny and editing, while a little rough around the edges, is pretty good.
7:58 THERE I AM GARY THERE I AM

Freaking incredible. You got me going "Uh... Did the video get muted due to music? Did the encoding fail when exporting?" until I realized the joke.
I hated the owner but some of the Gene shorts were genuinely funny and I *can't* stop thinking about that "Oip! Oip! Oip! Oip! Oip!" moment. That and I found the weird sounds funny as well.
For 62 years, these were the only Tom And Jerry episodes produced outside of the US until now when we got a Tom And Jerry anime. I’m not joking. Look it up for yourself.
I know! That’s why I find them so interesting! I want to see more Tom and Jerry cartoons produced outside the US. It’s fun to see different interpretations of the characters
it's not really an anime it's just that this time a Singaporean studio is doing the series
Also fun fact about Tall in the Trap, it was supposed to be an Sylvester and Speedy Gonzalez short but Robert McKimson turned it down and Tedd Pierce sold it to Gene Deitch and his staff.
@@PastaObesityonly person who likes Gene Deitch Tom And Jerry. I like that they don’t do it in the house as much as MGM,Chuck Jones, etc, especially with its Greek to me-ow,Tall in the trap,Dicky Moe,and Carmen Get It.
And then, Turner (which owned the MGM library since 1986) got owned by Warner Bros. WB now has both Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes, so it all comes full circle!
@face-orange-biting-nails Sort of Turner Entertainment kept the copyright to Tom and Jerry but distribution went from MGM to Warner. Unless said company gave or sold the copyright to Warner that's only partly true.
The Deitch shorts were terrible compared to the original Hanna Barbera and Chuck Jones shorts but at least they had their moments and had some good shorts.
@@PastaObesityI prefer the Hanna Barbera Version Over Chuck Jones.
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
My mom always referred to these shorts as "the Tom and Jerry with dumb sounds".
It should be pointed out that in addition to his Tom and Jerry shorts, Gene Deitch also created "Tom Terrific" (about a shape-shifting boy who fights crime with the help of his dog) for Terrytoons and directed "Munro" (from a story by cartoonist Jules Feiffer) about a five year old boy who gets drafted into the Army. It won the Best Animated Short Oscar in 1960 (the first cartoon made outside the US to win). The more you know, right?
I Really Want To See A Video Where You Dive Into Clint Clobber’s Character.
Chuck Jones’ Tom and Jerry is way less painful than Gene Deitch’s.
Thank god. I got more enjoyment out of that then this abusive douche bag.
Chuck Jone' Tom and Jerry is way less painful that Gene Deitch's.
When you look at the animation styles from various Iron Curtain countries, you can see how much they vary and yeah....there is a 'style' to each other them. I always wondered why these shorts looked so weird when I was a teenager and learning they were made in by Czech animators answered that question loudly and that's not to say that the animation is 'bad' but it's just so weird but at the same time a lot of the other things they did actually stood out. Given the era these shorts came out in, there are so many mod patterns and designs here that date the shorts but in a way that actually HELPS it, by setting up and showing off how lively 60s patterns and styles were to the point THEY pop out more than the colors of the characters. Hell, if you want a bit of confirmation that there is a 'style' in each country, look at the 80s Treasure Planet movie that IIRC was also made in the Czech Republic and it animates nearly the same though, ironically, the animation in the Tom and Jerry shorts are smoother and there is a lot less....cel sliding.
The thing that just sinks the era for me is Clint; he's not a funny character but more a tormentor of Tom. Going WAY BACK, even Mammy Two-Shoes wasn't this needlessly violent towards Tom and only punished him if he tore up thee house trying to get Jerry but other than that, from how pampered he was you can tell she treated him like a king which goes to point out why Tom wasn't going to let Jerry ruin that. The comedy of Tom getting hurt is due to how he brings it on himself. A better example of a character dueling out punishments to Tom is Spike, especially since Spike fills in the dog dynamic of the joke but Spike often gives Tom AMPLE WARNING to not fuck with him or his kid and when Tom does so anyway, he gets the wack.
Clint....Clint is just needlessly angry and totally unlikable. I know Mammy is a stereotype but he doesn't have the 'unseen owner'/parent factor that she and the redrawn owners did, he doesn't have the wholesome father factor that Spike had, he just exists and he exists to get angry at EVERYONE and it doesn't help that compared to Tom he doesn't seem to get his comeuppance at all. Yes, Tom 'hurts' him but Clint always gets the last straw even if Tom just did things by accident that didn't even involve Jerry.
And I will say, if there is one thing I am thankful that this series gave us it was DICKY MOE. It's the best "WHAT DOES IT EVEN MEAN?!?!' Moby Dick joke out there. That shadow gag was also very clever.
Ngl. I kinda love the animation in these shorts.
The way the character move reminds me of the animation from Jim Tyer. Only without the zany wildness.
Also, the weird sound effects were very amazing (especially that Boing sound).
You Should Rank,Review And Tell The Backstory Of The Tom and Jerry in 1963.
8:34 idk but I just love the surreal sound effects, it kinda like scratches my brain for some reason
Correction from 13:33:That’s not Clint Clobber. According to the late Gene Deitch himself both Tom’s owner and Clint Clobber are very coincidental (Which of course the villains wiki fandom also points this out as fans lacked their research the difference between these two). Besides other many Tom & Jerry fans thought that this obnoxious bastard is him because he was unnamed and despite this that in factuality Clint Clobber himself isn’t a Tom & Jerry character Clint is a character from TerryToons from his own animated shorts from 1957 to 1959 (Which I’ve been watching as a kid at the age of 8 when I got home from school) and especially unlike Tom’s owner from the gene deitch era of Tom & Jerry that is truly indeed a villain and animal abuser, Clint Clobber himself is an anti-heroic yet kind-hearted man with sympathy and lives in a hotel building in New York City and works as a janitor.
Gene Deitch also also declared people savaged it to look like its blatant and chopped liver plus he originally worked on Terrytoons in 50s and left because of how obsolete they were becoming to him
also how did looney tunes get overdone by these because DePatie-Freleng did them from 1967 to 1969 which was longer than those shorts
I'd give Sorry Safari a 5 or 6 not only because of Clint's comeuppance, but also the scene where the elephant got scared from Jerry. That scene made me cackle like a witch
Yeah sorry safari was horrible.. The way it will better only if clint clobber was eaten by a lion.. I wish the lion ate him
The thing that trips me out, is when Tom gets beat up, off screen! (8:34) Every time you hear those sound effects, it most likely means, Tom's defeat. On one hand, that's kind of sad😢. On the other hand, he's getting what he deserves!😊 Crazy!😵
“Buddies Thicker Than Water”, is the only one i known.
I only knew Carmen Get It.I thought that MGM had lost all of its budget.
@@ikarizadeh5032other than that,I didn’t bother to watch Gene Deitch Tom And Jerry except for Carmen Get It ,and preferred the MGM Tom And Jerry. I’m so glad I didn’t watch anymore of the train wrecks that Gene Deitch Tom And Jerry is.
Ok. I liked what Gene Dietch did with Popeye. But Tom and Jerry? That era sucked
You know what he did with the goons in “Goon with the wind”, he went very off with the designs
I can agree that the sound effects in this version of Tom & Jerry were misplaced and odd sometimes, but that didn't stop me from loving these cartoons by Gene Deitch. Of course, the original Hanna Barbera versions will always be the best without a doubt, but I still enjoyed the Gene Deitch versions as well. Except the "Mouse in Space" episode. That one was just boring.
Anyway, I knew that Gene Deitch wasn't so popular compared to Hanna Barbera, but I never knew that Gene's cartoons were so hated by so many people. Which is sad imo. I hope that I'm not the only one here who actually love Gene Deitch's Tom & Jerry.
Please give this comment a Like if you also feel the same way as I do. 😁👍
Gene ditch was the last tom and Jerry director to live since he died in April of 2020
My younger ass wondered why the Tom and Jerry series had so many style changes.
I remember loving watching this shorts because of how weird and confusing they were
I love the Chuck Jones Tom and Jerry
Most of the Tom and Jerry episodes in the Chuck Jones era were only boring. Especially the space episodes. I give Jones his points for trying. While Dietch was 90% of the studio who even knew of the cartoon in the first place and hated it at the same time, his Tom and Jerry should have only aired in that part of the world
Chuck jones shorts were better than gene dietch shorts. But there's most of chuck jones shorts are similar to hanna and barbera
@@Tedgamer-hm9hq Matinee Mouse (1966) and Shutterbugged Cat (1967) are my top two favorite episodes from the 1960s. They are actually the final original episodes. Hanna and Barbara worked with Chuck Jones twice and dropped those episodes
Yeah i know those two episodes also my favourite but there's shorts are similars like the chirstmas episode when tom kicks jerry out and bring him back to the house chuck jones made it. There's an episode jerry drinks medicine and invisibling and scaring tom and tom run this was funny short then tom cut jerry with scissors turn him to woman
@@Tedgamer-hm9hq His shorts were mimics of Looney Tunes shorts as well
@@Tedgamer-hm9hq Like when Sylvester and that other cat was competing to catch a rat running around a dock. Then Chuck Jones made a copy and called it “Cat and Dupli-Cat"
Always found it odd how the Gene Deitch era gets lumped into the Tom and Jerry reruns on Boomerang. Also I wouldn't be surprised if Itchy and Scratchy was vaguely inspired by this era of Tom and Jerry lol
I actually liked the Gene Deitch era Tom and Jerry. To me, it felt like watching Tom and Jerry if it was run by UPA (and to be fair, they were directed by a former UPA Employee).
Besides, there are far were iterations of the cat and mouse franchise that never should have existed (looking at you, Filmation Tom and Jerry nobody remembers, and Tom and Jerry Meet Willy Wonka)

You should make a video about the chuck jones era! this was pretty good btw, weird part where the audio cuts out tho
Saber spark is a furry 🔥🔥
One of the biggest issues i had with this era was that Jerry always won, even when he should've lost (Sorry Safari comes to mind). Hanna Barbera and Chuck Jones made it two way streets even with both losing at times
These two words at 12:53 basically describe Sonic in a nutshell (especially in Sonic the Comic).
This is what bendy is like in fosters he frame people and gets away with it it’s from a cartoon
Clint Clobber was just as Abusive
8:34 it sounds like one of those out of context Hanna Barbera SFX with the other sounds added in
I have a question why MGM didn't let hanna and barbera to continue working on the tom and jerry shorts in the 60s. Since they closed mgm cartoons in 1957 in 60s they should let hanna and barbera to countinue t&j shorts. But why mgm didn't let them.. Plz reply
But hanna and barbera formed their own company studio in 60s. But why they hiring a studio outside of usa. I really wish gene deitch shorts didn't exist. But for chuck jones i don't hate his shorts but his shorts better than gene dietch... The way to save their money they should let hanna and barbera to continue t&j shorts in 60s instead hiring another studio
@@Tedgamer-hm9hq
That would've costed a lot considering that Hanna-Barbera was at the peak of their game and MGM still owned the legal copyright and property of Tom and Jerry at the time.

You’re welcome btw
I just had a dream about me watching a Gene Deitch’s Tom and Jerry cartoon episode that DIDN’T exist.
So, it was that one episode called “The Train Tincture”, it was a replacement of the one great episode “The Tom and Jerry Cartoon Kit”. It was also an advertisement and instruction series just like his Self-Help series!
That episode in my dream took place in the train station! The plot was Tom and Jerry were chasing in the entire train station and while they were riding at the train where bunch of crowds was there. There were different colors of Train when Tom is after Jerry.
That’s all I can think of. Though that episode would rank as “entertaining”.
Watch as a random animator twenty years later randomly sees this and makes it real. (0.1% possibility)
@@PastaObesity That was in my sleep. The episode animation theme is the same as the good episode The Cartoon Kit. Also one of the Gene Deitch cartoon "How to Win on a Thruway" animation theme.
1:05 See what you did there, nice!
This explains my sympathy towards tom!
Am I the only one who likes Gene Deitch's Tom and Jerry shorts? I watched some of them in my school.
It’s weird how WB Kids puts the clips from these episodes in their Tom And Jerry compilation videos. Edit: So I watched the recent Tom And Jerry compilation video from WB Kids and it has the notorious High Steaks episode with the abusive Clint Clobber in it. Oh joy.
Not to say that this video is bad, which is the opposite, but Tom's owner in this era is officially unnamed.
I know. I just feel like calling him "Clint Clobber"/fan name is easier to understand to the general audience.
@@PastaObesity That's just fine, there's a fact that you need to know: Clint Clobber is one of Gene Deitch's OCs (although OCs existed right before DeviantArt) from TerryToons shorts.
@PastaObesity Hey one one more thing. Since I’ve kindly corrected you that that creepy and loathsome fat man from the gene deitch era of Tom & Jerry isn’t Clint clobber (Since he was created by TerryToons), can you please remake this video and also make a length video about the differences between Clint Clobber from TerryToons and Tom’s Owner from gene deitch’s Tom & Jerry and their characters personalities and traits in comparison to let the other Tom and Jerry fans understand?

9:16 😂😂😂
what's with this long ankward pause during 1:09 to 1:19
It's referencing the actual cartoon.
During those ten seconds after Clint wraps the gun around Tom and shoots it, the audio will go completely mute until Tom can hear again.
Thought it would be cool to do that for the video just because.
Even though these cartoons are bad there not as bad as the Tom and Jerry Comedy show
I saw this when i was a kid
I actually have all thirteen of these cartoons on DVD, I don't know if you should feel bad for me or not.
@@PastaObesity Anyway since about a few weeks ago me and my brother started naming Tom's fat abusive owner "Big Billy"
Good review on this but I remember that Hanna Barbera's animation for the Flintstones cost less than 8,000 dollars and the animator for Deitch's version cost 10,000 and both of these are not lots of money. The cause of the animation being choppy is because they couldn't afford lots of supplies such as paper, cels, and ink and paint. UPA didn't really use realism for the UPA cartoons being directed by Pete Burness who also animated for Hanna Barbera's Tom and Jerry. And the reason for the lip-sync is because they forgot about the dialogue notes on the exposure sheet (which is a good tool for timing). I recommend watching 60s croatian animation such as Maxi Cat and Professor Balthazar which are honestly both great. People need to do better at sound design. Overall, great video but the humour and editing needs to be improved.
Where Did You Find These Gene Deitch Images

Clint Clobber was An Abusive Owner to Tom during The Gene Deitch Era But Chuck Jones Tom and Jerry Were Just as Great
I will NEVER get the hate for these shows. Yeah the animation is not the best but it's NOT as worst than the 60s Looney Turns cartoons. I rather watch the 60s Popeye and the Tom and Jerry shorts from the 60s. I love the original shorts, duh. Also I was NEVER a big fan of the Chuck Joes Design of Tom and Jerry. I hate there cheeks so damn much. Love the violence in all of these cartoons. Again I will NEVER GET THE HATE FOR THESE SHOWS. To me they are classics.
Tell I’m the trap was actually one of the better ones
Is the opera singer the only one aware that there is a mouse in the opera house while all of the most likely men thinks that Tom is causing trouble in the opera house? How could that usher not be aware that Jerry ran in front of him and only sees Tom following kicking him out? Not to mention that the conductor didn’t even see Tom hold Jerry in his hand.

They were weird, no doubt about it. I remember enjoying them for the most part as a kid. The sound effect choices were somehow off-putting and intriguing in equal measure. But for whatever reason, the design of Tom's feet with those bizarre fucking toes, really really bothered me.
I don’t really know why is gene’s cartoons like this
The only Deitch cartoon i remember is the space one with the scene with the serious russian mouse. As a kid, it felt seamless with the other Tom and Jerry cartoons.

Nah bro these cartoons went hard the art style was amazing
MGM's last short of Tom and Jerry was 103: Blue Cat Blues but the series was getting back at MGM so they made a last short 114: Tot Watchers.
At least 1960s seven arts looney tunes shorts looks way albeit cheap lookin cartoons way better in comparison to gene dietch's tom and jerry shorts but both of them had shitty cartoons anyways.

honestly i prefer Gene Deitch tom & jerry more than chuck jones .. chuck jones tom & jerry was horrible .. it has the worst stories & the characters looks nothing like tom or jerry & very cheap designed .. plus its not even funny ..
