I made a comment about this on a bass university post and got a sparky comment from them. Last time I watched there stuff. I fish small ponds and clear pressured lakes and the smaller profile works great. Especially with a boot tail. I. Glad you posted this. Thank you sir
I'll definitely try that. I am going to try a small Willow Leaf spinnerbait with a Berkley jerk shad for Clearwater spotted bass. Appreciate you for taking the time to give us some good information.
I put your jig head with a Spark Shad on a Beetle Spin….it catches everything! I initially did it to upsize my crappie catch but I caught more bass than anything…nice ones too!!!
Great insight and advice as always. This year I put my old beetle spin clip-on blades on my 3” Keitech paddle tails. It’s been very effective for both crappie and bass.
I’ve been doing this for years. In addition to the soft plastics Matt mentioned, try a white or chartreuse strike king rage tail grub as a trailer. Pair it on a half or 3/8 ounce spinner bait with tandem willow leaf blades (I like #4.5 gold main willow blade and #3 silver willow or Colorado smaller blade). It is killer around submerged vegetation or brush piles and lay downs. Good luck!
It defiantly works, my home lake doesn’t have a lot of grass but it’s also home to a ton of anglers so it gets heavily pressured especially in those areas, grass edges are key and this tip is something they don’t see from the immense pressure, personally I love using the Spark Shad for a couple of reasons, 1) it really gives the bait a lot of great action when it’s being slow rolled or pumped, 2) it makes it easier to skip under low hanging branches. Awesome tip Matt and thanks for all the great content !!
That's exactly what I do with a fluke. Also Matt, I save the skirt material after the bands break, you can poke a hole through it and thread the strands through it.
Over 20 years ago we used a Hank Parker Spinnerbait with a simple trailer very successfully. The Zoom Split Tail trailer is a modern version of that classic trailer.
A couple companies make naked spinner baits- I bought one, I just never use it. I'll have to break it out and see what it can do for me. I threw it a couple times, convinced myself it wasn't going to work, and put it up. Jewel makes it- comes with a Keitech already on it. Then Strike King has the redfish spinner- supposed to be for salty or brackish water but- should work fine for freshwater as well. That said- I have so many spinner baits it wouldn't hurt to make a few myself- plus I could use the extra skirt material to make a few of your finesse swim jigs. Thanks for the tip Mat.
Thanks for this tip! As much as I love throwing a spinnerbait I'd never done this. I went out this evening and tried it with a small 3/16 Booyah Pond Magic spinnerbait with a 2.8 Keitech and caught a couple small ones. Would've caught more but the tail ripped off the only 2.8 I had on me and the only other trailers I had on hand were some 3.8 Big Bite Pro Swimmers. I cut the length down a bit and it continued to produce strikes but with the longer size they kept nipping the tail. I'll remember to have a full pack of 2.8s the next time out. I'll try it with a larger spinnerbait and fluke next as well. Thanks again, this rig definitely gets bit!
Aim at appreciate your videos that have been a very educational for me I'm sure everybody else appreciates him too keep up the good work you're making us all a little better
Spinner baits are cool. Probably one of the easiest baits to modify/reconfigure. Pretty neat to think about how many different species of fish are caught on white fluke style baits. Thanks for the vid. Maybe at some point talk about the tools/bait components you keep in your boat for bait modifications in the moment of a fishing day.
Another great tip I didn’t think of! Now teach me what to do when my prefish spots all fail during tournament time - just had another miserable tournament after a positive prefish 🤦♂️
I watched a video with Berkeley guys and they recorded caught fish didn’t eat again or bite again for days to weeks. They remember negative experiences for up to 6 months so slashing around outside water with ripped lips prob isn’t the funnest thing. Lol. Best to prefish non barb hooks or cut 1-2 of treble hook off. Feel the tug judge size then release tension and let it spit lure out.
@@braddistler5697 yea that makes a lot of sense, which is why I’ve stopped really setting the hook on hardly anything prefishing, usually just one in each area if I can’t see if the hits are bass otherwise if I know it’s a bass of proper size I won’t
I have not tossed a spinner bait in years,I’ll try this because a fluke is a great bait here in fall .but downsizing my spinner bait to a custom finesse bait an a smaller swimmer .
I admit i have never tried this mod but I know for sure it works on a buzzbait so why not a spinnerbait, great tips Matt and one that I will definitely try. Thanks for always sharing.
And if you're afraid of taking the skirts of your spinnerbaits, if your lake is anything like mine keep a eye out in the tree branches and just grab a donor with a dried out skirt, BOOM you're good to go!
I love this tip. It’s like an over sized beetle spin. One of my all time favorite baits. Thanks again.
Glad you like it!
No holding back.... Giving up the goods... tips and tricks... Good Stuff..
No secrets here
Being new to bass fishing in my second year watching Matt, I've learned a lot. And, I love what he teaches about different ways to fish for bass.
thanks!

Awesome tip to share. I did this exact thing years ago river fishing for smallmouth after a skirt fell off and it works
Good stuff!

twin tail grubs ,,, work good for me.
They work well on everything!
Remember the Beetle Spin?
Exactly.
Beetle spins need more colors like in the past.
They catch piles of fish!
