I live at roughly the latitude of Seattle, but on Vancouver Island. My yard is a north facing slope, and buildings to the south shade my yard before the end of August. I don't think I can ever expect to ripen the main crop, but the breba crop currently consists of about 20 fruit on a 7 ft tree. Do I harm the tree if I take off almost all of the main crop figlets to help divert energy to the breba crop?
Any advice on how long to let the timer run the irrigation system? I suppose it depends on the nozzles one has but how should we determine how long it runs? Thx man
Is there a trick or way to focus more on stem thickening of the fig tree? Currently mine are smaller than 1 inch in diameter. Really looking for a way to focus on thicken the stem let's say 3 to 4 inch in diameter. Tips???
That much of an increase will take considerable time. Wind helps, but what's important is that you realize that every fig tree is different. Some fig trees produce thicker wood than others.
@@RossRaddi This is absolutely true. My Colonel Littman's Dark Cross has some incredible thickness and they are in 25 gallon pots that the LSU trees do not have and they are the same age and placed within four feet of each other. Amazing how different the trees are.
@@RossRaddi ok. Unfortunately i thought with some pruning i could force it to focus more on its core than leafs and fruits. Im afraid they might break in a wild stormy wind.
I know that you can plant fig trees pretty close together but you're going to have problems back there in that corner down the line like 10 years from now
My tree is 4 yrs old. In the ground. About 6 ft wide an 6 ft high. This year the amount of fruit on the tree is spectacular. 👍🏻
I'm happy for you!
Hi Ross do you dry your figs, are any variety better for drying
@rossraddi, would there be any benefits to defoliation as well as removing the fruits as well?
I'm sure there is. Especially lower on the trees and in the middle of them.
Is it possible that the tiny green figs are providing some photosynthesis benefit to the tree, similar to what the leaves provide?
They are!
What about thinning very small figs from a mature tree ?

Does removing main crop figs from San Pedro type figs increase their breba production?
Good question. I don't have an educated answer. I personally wouldn't remove them. That's my intuition.
@@RossRaddi I love it when you don't BS. I wish more of our congressmen would follow your lead. Thank you!
who waters your potted fig trees when you go on vacation?
My irrigation connect to a batter powered automatic timer. That's how they're watered even when I'm home.

@@HVACRTECH-83 I cover that in my irrigation article on the blog: www.figboss.com/post/fig-tree-watering-too-much-water-leads-to-watered-down-figs

In 10 years, these trees will be planted on another property! Well hopefully it doesn't take that long.
Hey Ross! Are you still trying to get that farm to put a fig orchard in?
Absolutely.
Any here making fruit jam ? 3 lbs figs = 4 6 oz Mason jars
👍
