They are called by different names in every Island. The fish is done in a similar way that we in Trinidad do our fry dry 🐟.
Fyi most Jamaicans ancestors are Ashanti Slaves from Ghana. 6 or 7 generations ago hence the similarities in culture. Kwame, Tackie and Nanny falls in Jamaica are named after Ghanaian warriors sent there in the days of slavery.

The first thing I noticed when you were driving in the car was how clean the streets are and how they keep everything so clean!! Can't wait for the rest of your time there to see what happens next time 👍💕
Kenkey is like a large ball of fermented maize or corn flour which is like dumplings moulded into a large ball with the corn hasks put in it and reboiled after kneaded together. Eaten with ground pepper with tomatoes and onions and salt to taste. This kenkey dish is available in Jamaica by the Maroons and they call it Dokono just as the Asante/Ashanti people call kenkey. Because of their asante/Ashanti background they call it same name as them and the Kromanti's also call it the Domino. In Ghana the English name is Kenkey as we call it but the Ga people of Accra say Komi/Komey, Fante people also call it Dokon. James town looks just like Jamaica. I think its the people and the blood being one makes everything look the same. Rice and peas in Jamaica Ghana has Waakye which is the same style of food. We have Abom with ampesi (sauce made of Tarro leaves (kontomire), spinach, callaloo in Ghana and in Jamaica you have the same sauce sometimes eaten with yam, plantain potatoes and the Ghanaian eat it the same way as well as the rest of west Africa. Another version of this is called Pallava Sauce, and sometimes modified into Agusi/Agushi sauce by adding the dried ground Mellon seeds.
One of the kids said "mo ho y3 feo" meaning you guys are beautiful. I really melted. In Ghana loving your neighbor is taught from infancy that's why the country is so hostile 🌹

Yeah you are right there is ocean close by, thats where the fisherman do their thing. Personally, my favorite is fufu with groundnut soup and chicken. Fried yam and tsoofi or turkey tail is another favorite of mine, many, many others. Fun fact the are a lot of Jamaicans in Ghana, Rita Marley even has a house there or used to. Lol, the kids at the beach said Jilly is pretty lol kids....
My favorite food is tou zaffi with groundnut soup, Kenkey with fried fish, pepper or tomato stew or any stew 😏, Waakye (pronounced waachey), Banku, Fufu, kelewele (plantain fried in spices), shito sauce with my tilapia ...etc.. yeah I have so many favorites. 😂
A lot of the Caribbean Islands are very similar. Our forefathers traveled on the same ships but on different trips so the cultures and behaviors are spread all over the world. With the world as small as it is with travel and quick communication everything is easily shared. ✌
