Love my little Mojo pot stand! That simmer ring idea of lweaver99's sure looks like it has a lot of merit for something you want to simmer for an extended time. Thanks for the video in uncomfortably warm conditions.
For those looking for a Trangia simmer ring, if you cut the bottom off a Fancy Feast cat food can and it makes a really good simmer ring for a Trangia. Haven't put holes in it as it knocks the flame down well and keeps burning. The FF can uncut also works well as a snuffer for a Trangia burner. It's also reasonably durable in both uses..
Thanks for producing this vid. For those of us who like to actually cook on the trail this looks promising. For those who just want to boil 2 cups and then complain about the video, why did they watch one with a title that includes the words 'simmer ring'? What is that nifty little lighter?
Since you are not using the standard simmer ring, maybe you should set the stove onto of it; instead of removing the rubber seal from the lid to set the stove on that. BTW, this may work well as a baking setup.
Hiram, love the channel. Without a doubt, it is the best water boiling channel on YT. I'm not sure if you'd ever consider it or if anyone else would even be interested, but I'd be curious as to how fast the temperature dropped from a boil and where it would ultimately stabilize if you put put the simmer ring on post boil.
Why not just make several snuffer caps with different sized holes in the center? I suspect the larger the hole, the hotter the flame. With a little experimentation you could probably have 2 or 3 caps and get the ideal heat outputs for your cooking needs. Just a thought. I enjoy your videos by the way.
Have you tried the same soda-can simmer ring but withoug raising the burner on the lid? And how does this compare to the Trangia non-adjustable simmer ring?
Great video. I don't use my trangia much but i did try dry baking with ut over the weekend and when i put the simmer ring on i was getting flames coming out around the simmer ring plate. Not sure why but this might help. Thnx.
GREAT IDEA , all the flame I need is just enough to heat a can of soup , or, make ramen noodles ! It took a long time to find a burner to do just that ! I reached out to " Batch " HE did a little head scratching to come up w/one ( a small juice can , ot smaller ) . How would the flame respond to a taller simmer ring ?
Not quite, Harry. The Trangia simmer ring is problematic. When the stove gets really hot, the evaporated vapors cause flames to appear all around the simmer ring. It is not designed to give much control. Plus, this video is intended to address use of the simmer ring when it is half or 3/4 closed, not fully open. Sometimes, we want a consistent small flame. The Trangia simmer ring does not do that very well.
Does your MOJO pot stand in normal use have your magical 1" sweet spot dimension from burner jet holes to underside of the pot? Knowing the gap I can work back to replicate your simmer ring set up. I do not have a MOJO STAND. increasing the Simmer ring height will give a different flame charistic, so removing the screw on lid and adding it's height to the simmer ring altered the setup despite maintaining the gap from top of simmer ring to underside of the pot. The chimney height has increased. Thanks for sharing. Take care Best regards Colin
Hello Hiram. Have not seen a bunch of videos lately. I am looking for plans to make a small alcohol heater for my tarp shelter. Something I can sit on a brick and heat the shelter. It would need to be fuel efficient to last all night. Any ideals. I have the zippo heater but won't heat shelter enough.
Hi Hiram Hope you are all well! Do you have an idea why, with the ring, you need to raise the stove and ruin the 1inch sweet spot please Also you didn't mention it as most often you do..... trangia burned over 28 minutes at simmer ,...... how much fuel was left please? In your opinion can we bank on 30 minutes??? A back of the ears scratch for Max please! Thanks and keep up educatin us!! Old John
The Trangia is not a Gas regulated stove. Especially with the Trangia Set you would increase significant the burn time. The Swedish Army knew very well why the Trangia looks like today.
Yes I did. When I changed the location of the camera, that changed the angle of the light falling on the time, so I had to change the location of the timer. Now the logo is covering the time, which I noticed after I did the video. So now I have to change where the logo is. I'm thinking maybe in the upper left-hand corner.
Interesting! Testing variables (1) Simmer ring without elevating Trangia. (2) Elevating Trangia without using the simmer ring. Many times you've noted the 1" "sweet spot" for alcohol burners. Just wondering if a better* simmer can be obtained with either of the 2 variables mentioned. Thank you for your dedication, especially considering the heat in your lab. * better simmer = near a boil vs just keeping at/near pasteurization temp.
A to #1. if you set the pot directly on the simmer ring there will be no airflow and it'll snuff out the flame. #2. Taking the pot out of the 'sweet spot' gives room for the heat to dissipate before hitting the pot but wastes much more fuel. the idea is to reduce the amount of heat but also fuel ...to keep food hot but not boiling
comfortouch Item #1 If the cap isn't placed underneath the burner, distance between top of simmer ring and bottom of pot is increased. Effect on simmer? Item #2 If burner is place on cap and simmer ring removed air flow increased. Improve simmer rate? An ounce of fuel has nnn BTUs. Burn nnn fast or slow depending on objective of heating. Adjust factors for rate of use of BTUs to meet that objective. Quick boil for coffee or slow down for baking examples.
Varying the height of the simmer ring (making multiple rings) will affect the heat output of the burner and allow you to adjust to the desired cooking temp with simple exchanges.
Maybe you should try the simmering as it is , does exactly what it says ,do not crescent the cap that’s not what it’s designed for ,it’s designed to be placed over fully open , try it my friend and I think you be eating your words ,. 🤡
What I don't understand is, what was the purpose of taking the rubber gasket out of the cap?? All you were using the cap for was to get more of a elevation......the rubber gasket could have stayed in place.......had no effect one way or the other. Stephen, Ohio
To protect the o-ring from heat transfer from the bottom of the Trangia burner to the lid, which may damage the o-ring. Not sure how hot the bottom of the Trangia would get (under a fire ban here, so can't play with my toys) .
I love that you apologise for the heat. It’s okay, we can’t feel the heat on our end.
Love my little Mojo pot stand! That simmer ring idea of lweaver99's sure looks like it has a lot of merit for something you want to simmer for an extended time. Thanks for the video in uncomfortably warm conditions.
GREAT for a can of soup or ramen
noodles ! But You'd have to really have to protect that simmer ring for transport !
I made the ring and it works perfectly. Thanks!
As always a good video, thanks for making it. I will have to try this with my FireBox nano, the burn time with this ring on was rather impressive.
Neat idea. I'm definitely going to try that.
Hiram - are you still doing any video's? I really miss your videos and test.
Excellent 👍 I’ll try it out for steaming rice and the like.

8 years late, but the reason to not use the Trangia simmer ring as a riser is because it is needed as a snuffer when you want to put the flame out.
Hiram, love the channel. Without a doubt, it is the best water boiling channel on YT.

Sounds like a good test. Thanks.
Great tip. Many thanks.
Fire detector friendly !
Would be great at heating up soup etc
Great video

I tried that, and it didn't work. The flame kept going out.

Another great video Hiram, I was wondering if you could share the make and model of your thermometer/ timer. Thank you in advance.
Have you seen this video?

Watching now, Thanks Hiram.

Hiram I have to say another great video. An easy addition to the trangia. What was the case you pulled the ring from in the beginning of the video?
Trangia simmer ring fully open does the same thing.

Just found is video. Is lweaver99 still making them? Looks interesting

Of course the aluminium can is light but would a more durable piece of metal pipe have the same effect?
Awesome!
looks good, maybe I can simmer some Spaghetti til its Al Dente. thx.
That would probably work.
Open a can of soup ( Progresso is My choice ) set can in Your pot & that set up would work pretty darn
good I bet !!!
That simmer ring should really extend the mpg.
( or , should I say the mpml. )

I think 30 minutes would be a pretty safe bet. There was a fair amount of methanol left, and I hadn't filled it up to begin with.
Perhaps it's because of Heat transfer caused by the heat of the stove. Right??
A soup can will work too. :)
What is your ideal fuel choice
Denatured alcohol or Heet (fuel additive) in the yellow bottle. Heet can be found at most automotive retailers.
The Trangia is not a Gas regulated stove. Especially with the Trangia Set you would increase significant the burn time. The Swedish Army knew very well why the Trangia looks like today.
What is the height of the simmer ring, e.i.,. how much of the can do you use?
1-1/8"

Instead of putting the cap under the burner, why not just make the simmer ring taller?
Or use the simmer cap to raise the burner. That way you don't risk the o-ring, either.
Coz that would increase the distance between open air and the fuel surface with possible oxygen starvation.
If your weight obsessed you won't have the simmer ring with you.
It did work but it's just one more thing to lose or bend out of shape.
Maybe you should try the simmering as it is , does exactly what it says ,do not crescent the cap that’s not what it’s designed for ,it’s designed to be placed over fully open , try it my friend and I think you be eating your words ,. 🤡
