There is a difference between a perfect recording and the best recording. Sometimes the best recording is the one where you can feel like you’re listening to a person and not a machine.

Definitely needed this, I used to get so caught up in playing perfect that the anxiety would KILL my performance, just came down to the realization that not every solo is perfect, not every improvisation is going to sound the best.

bartley is one of the best of all time in my opinion, i love the way he expresses his self during his solos like tea for two and after youve gone, patrick can straight up take what i wish i could play and he plays it, like ive been trying to learn easy to love by cannon ball for like 3 months and he did it in 1 hour i mean like, patrick you may not think you play perfect but fo sho i love your playing and its so clean and its just like cannonballs.

Don’t be sorry. Perfectionism is an enemy of discovery sometimes. I needed to hear this, as a moonlighter (got my crappy day-job, feel tired) and wondering if what I play matters- it matters to me when I jam with people. I LIKE IT. Fundamentals open the door but, yeah, I feel this. It’s outlets. It’s freedom. Thank you for sharing.

I always admired your work with a PASSION, Pat, i love your authenticity, i love your energy, i love the VIBE you bring to the table, i love the passion and the SENTIMENT you put on every fucking DAMN NOTE, whenever i catch you live i stay BECAUSE of that, i don't care about listening to perfect studio recording version of the same songs?? I already got that on spotify, i want that FEELING when i tune into your stream, i want the raw, unfiltered PASSION you exude with every song, i want the FUN you're having while playing, i admire that, and i'm all about it. Thank you for your excellent self, Pat.

The beautiful thing about music is that it is completely open. Musicians decide for themselves what direction to take . One can explore new sounds and techniques, or playing with ultimate precision and timing, plunging deep into theory, or just finding a singular approach and trying to make it work in a wide variety of contexts. I am just a mediocre guitarist playing in my little studio with a jot of tools and toys. I don't play out a lot so I can do whatever pleases me. When I play with other people and in front of people of course I need too fit and there is beauty in that discipline too. The ultimate for me would be playing with a group of like minded musi Ian's whose company I enjoy and having a venue to share it with people and having enough money to feed, clothe and house myself, but that is just a beautiful dream.

I love your approach and mindset! You gotta live on the edge and push yourself, even if it risks “mistakes”. I am nowhere near your level, but I also feel the music, and I will not relegate myself to play “safe” all the time - yeah I also remain committed to honing my skills and craft to the next level, just as you obviously are. I guess that’s why I immediately connected with you and your music the first time I heard you over a year ago! “Perfect”ly safe, who needs it. I’ll leave that to the Top-40 computerized music.

No need to apologize!! I'm a visual artist and I really relate to your way of thinking, maybe that's why I love jazz so much. Thanks for putting your thoughts out there! As artists its equally important to make art and also talk about it so people can connect and learn the purpose. This year I became a big fan of your music and I'm happy to find your personal account and hear what you have to say and make. When I draw and work I usually have your J-Music or your live set videos playing. I love your energy and passion. 🧡 I adore your work and support what you do!

Been learning guitar for about a year now as my first instrument and even though I hardly have time to practice (Engineering major), I just like to play the guitar and listen to its sounds, even if I hardly have any grasp of music theory. 1:50 is *literally* what I say to myself in my mind word for word. "It's not that deep", "I like it". I'm just a learning musician who likes to hear the sounds of a guitar.
I've been looking at other musicians on UA-cam, and I sometimes get discouraged when I see Jacob Collier talk about music theory with this super deep, super profound understanding, or Barry Harris with all his wisdom in music, and while one day I hope I might understand music close to that level, at the end of the day I'm not gonna gaslight myself into thinking that that is the only way to appreciate music. I like playing guitar... because I like it. It's not too deep. I don't need to be a music wizard to like playing the guitar, so in the meantime, I'm just going to enjoy music at my own pace, even if it might take many more years to learn in comparison to a music major for example.

There’s something about musicians that makes them desire to be perfectionists. I’ve been studying music for 2 years now and every time I shed, I think I sound terrible, even when I play the notes correctly. My teachers tell me I play good but I still don’t think that about myself. Whenever I screw up on some notes or pieces, I think to myself “Maybe I should quit music.”
Why tf do musicians hate themselves and think they’re terrible, WHEN EVERYONE TELLS THEM THAT THEY ARE NOT?!

Hi Pat, It is a great message. Playing to be authentic is more I. Important than being perfect. I can just think about the recording of Giant Steps on which Tommy Flanagan had some difficulties during the recording and this was the final take anyway. There was something on it that was better than other recordings. I think authentic is more important than perfect. Thanks for. Reminding us about it..

4:09 This video was very necessary. It's cathartic to hear someone play without holding back. "Perfect" playing can have its place, but I think it's oversaturated musical circles for too long. I want to be able to play the way I feel.

Disorganized video getting an equally disorganized comment response lol.
Something that I noticed is that when I originally listened to "Moon" by Perfume right before your JME cover, I wasn't exactly the biggest fan of the song. Don't get me wrong, I liked it a fair bit, it just wasn't the type of music that I normally dig. But when I went to listen to your cover of it, something about the sheer passion of your (and the other member's) playing made me GET it. Like, that passion made me understand not only the original song better, but why you all love it so much, even if I can't really articulate why.
idk maybe I speaking bullshit but her it is lmao.
you're still a massive inspiration to me

I think a lot of the chase for perfection comes from the internet. 50 years ago, if you go for something wild and fall flat on your face, nobody would know outside of that club. Maybe someone's buddies if they have a video camera. Nowadays, if you go for something wild and fall flat, you're one unlucky audience member away from winding up on the latest cringe compilation. That's not a fear you can afford to have as a musician, you can't fear your audience, but it's an understandable one with the world we live in I think.
