Porter's Generic Strategies: Focus

One of Porter's 3 Generic Strategies is to focus on a narrow section of the market and serve those customers' needs better than your competitors, who are targeting the broader market.
The focus strategy is used by the company Tarptent, which makes ultralight tents. While some companies produce tents intended for the mass market, Tarptent only produces tents for backpackers. Tarptent noticed that long-distance backpackers are very sensitive to the weight of their gear, so Tarptent designed a tent that does not require the use of tent poles. Instead, Tarptent's tents rely on a hiker's trekking poles. Such a tent has no value to people who lack trekking poles, but Tarptent is not targeting those customers. The company has instead chosen to focus on a niche group of customers and to serve those customers' needs very well.-
