Looks great, even straight out of the box! It’s pretty common with Bandai to include the entire sprue from another kit if it’s got parts used by whatever model you’re building. This happens a lot with Gundam suits, lots of grunt suits are just variations of one another and you’ll often end up with nearly full sprues of extras that you didn’t use.
I think this is the best example of the Mandalorian in plastic form so far. Done right it can beat the Mafex version and I've seen some negatives about the Mafex version. Nitpicking here, but accuracy is a bit of an issue - looking at the armor plate on his right thigh. If he has the signet and the left knee armor then the right thigh armor shouldn't look like it does.
Isn't that his look from the last few minutes of Season 1? I wish it had included a right shoulder pad without the mudhorn, just for the option to be more Season 1ish.
Dude, I cancelled my Mafex order for this kit because it includes the spear and the Darksaber. So not weird at all! I like the fact that I can do some easy customization and paint before assembling the full model.
I was at my local target which had 3 of these. I grabbed one and was a little hesitant about the 39.99 price . Put it back and now I'm regretting every bit of my decision. Awesome review, kit looks really good .
The one at Target isn’t the same as this one, per se. This one is the extra chrome version but the one at Target is the regular dull silver version. The extra chrome one is a bit more expensive at about $60.
@@Cabooselover79 if you still are looking for this kit hobby lobby if you have those near you usually has a few bandai kits and will usually every other week have 40% sales
After watching the intro, yes Robo buying an import after owning many other incredible imports of the same character and then saying it’s all worth it for an accessory is weird.
The extra pieces on the sprues is just generally a common practice when they re-use parts. It's probably just cheaper to make the full sprue then to subtract pieces.
Just throwing it out there but I’ve done it myself and it looks great!!! In my opinion any way. Combine the black series mandalorian with the armour of the model kit mando, it make him look a little more proportionate
This is my first model kit, I hated putting on the decals, I knew what I was getting into because of this video, but I wanted a figure that looked like in the show without paying more than $50z
God bless you . I have huge hands and horrible eyesight lol I would never think to nor even attempt to build a model kit figure. Awesome job sir. Would like to see it all painted up once finished .
Oh wow! He arrived. Nice! You know, you're the one that I blame for my love for these model kits. I'm one of those guys who watched your channel since the beginning. Great video as always.
Having built a few, I’m still not convinced that the model kits work that well for human characters, however the Bandai Grevious is truly amazing and the limited articulation works fine for the 3PO who is properly shiny too. I actually have 2 3PO’s on my shelf from Bandai and they look fantastic.
Kinda true. Bandai's amazing when it comes to their Gunpla and other mecha model kits, but unfortunately trying to translate those mechanics to human characters is a bit less so due to the inherent difficulties of making a plastic model of a soft, elastic-skinned human, at least not without it looking weird. That said, for stuff like their FigureRise Standard Ultraman series of kits, they actually work quite well since they're more full powered armor than man in a suit (which makes me wonder why they haven't done kits for Iron Man yet when they already have the license for it).
I had this preordered, but I agree with you about it not being the greatest action figure. Aside from the Mafex, the Black Series one with a custom cape seems to be the best option. Although the spear is definitely nice. Thanks for saving me some money, Robo!
It depends I guess. Imo the Black series Mandos are more for if you're on a budget. The articulation of those things kind annoyed me and I ended up selling it.
This was great to watch! I have neither the patience nor the hand-eye coordination for model kits, but it does look quite nice. Proportions are great, but odd choices with the design. Season 1 thigh armor, but season 2 kneepad. Great that they included the spear and sword, but poopoo about the decal on the saber. You're right that white plastic would've been way better! Will you be painting his gloves orange? Overall, after having seen all of the versions of 1/12 Beskar Mando, I'd say the Figuarts with an extended neck peg is the winner, including Mafex. The ton of accessories included with the Figuarts, in addition to Bandai figures being way less fragile than Mafex (have already seen several horror stories about the Mafex breaking various parts), plus the Bandai having the nicest paint of the bunch make it my favorite. The Black Series with a custom helmet and cape is no slouch for a $20 figure--though after upgrades, it's nearly as much as the Figuarts, so...Yeah. I cancelled my Mafex order and will stick with my Figuarts. I like Mafex, but I won't be preordering figures from them anymore. Too many QC issues to justify the prices. If I really want a Mafex in the future, I'll wait for reviews and if needed pay a little extra for not preordering once I know the figure is solid.
cant wait to get my hands on this one. i didn't expect Bandai to produce this kit at all. I am going to get the normal version and paint the beskar. this is the way
If I had to guess those extra runners with Boba Fett parts are from a different kit and they just ended up using parts for this kit. Bandai does this from time to time with kits that reuse parts between one another and with both Boba and Mando wearing similar armor would account from that.
Hey i got the Mafex figure yesterday. I think you'll really love the Mafex figure, other than it being just the season 1 mando without the jetpack and the symbol on his shoulder armor i think he's got the best propotions out of all of them and the little statue of grogu is really great.
I miss your model kit reviews. So with 4 versions of Beskar Mandalorian; Black Series (two if we consider the deluxe with Grogu), SH Figuarts, Bandai Model Kit, and MAFEX, are you going to do the comparison on the definitive 1/12 scale Mandalorian? Excellent review as always. :)
@@TheFwoosh Please make the showdown section long and descriptive. I cannot decide between them, as all have their flaws. From what I've seeing there is no perfect one.
Nice build and thanks for the heads up on building this guy. I'll paint where decals go and distress everything. I'll have to decide whether to use Alclad or a chrome pen on the armor. 🙂👍
Built quite a few Bandai Gundam kits but haven't really tried a SW model kit! It was pretty fun watching you go, might have to give this one a shot. Great vid as always Robo!
Highly recommend skimming that molotow pen across the edges of the dark saber, I do it with all my black blades that come with my model kits to bring out some detail; in this case I feel like it would help with the shiny energy effect, and then painting in some little lightning details or so
Thanks as always for the great review. After seeing all the problems with the Mafex, I ordered this silver one as the helmet and proportions on this guy are amazing. Can’t wait to build him.
The first 1:12 scale figure to have the Beskar spear. It is a good option to have. I wish one of mine had that weapon. I've got three versions of that character and two of them are holding the same weapon. It would be nice to have all three of them holding a different weapon.
Im still waiting for my kit to arrive, and surprised that bandai only included the damaged right thigh armor from season 1, considering we have spear and dark saber, which is from season 2, it should include right thigh armor from season 2 which is more cleaner.
For this model kit to really look good, you have to put a black wash over the entire base body and then put a matte clear coat over top. Next, you need to put a black wash over top of the armor pieces, doing that it will look more realistic and having the wash will make the seam on the helmet less visible (right side will match the left side). Lastly, get your marker or brush to get all the silver parts looking right.
I remember you doing them, so funny looking back. See your still using stickers instead of water slide decals….lol nice to see your still making best figure reviews.
Been wanting this guy, that cape is like the same material as the tamashi nations movie realization ronin mando, such a shame it came on a hundred dollar figure but id expect that for a model 🤙✌️🖐
Thanks for pointing out all the sprue cut off mark issues with the chrome armor. They did an okay job at hiding the majority of marks, but they could've done better as the have done on other kits. Not a major eyesore so I'll get the chromed version.
Not bad! I think it definitely is the best one out yet. It’s too bad the silver coating takes away from a few small details, seems you can never get the best of both worlds but the spear and darksaber look great 👍
I got mine last week but haven't had the time to assemble him yet so looking forward to it, not made a model kit figure yet although I've managed to pick up a few recently, need to have a model building day.
Honestly I think you could paint on the white on the dark saber and it would look amazing, also add tiny white specs on the black piece to make it more accurate to the actual dark saber
I finally got my preorder in January and this is next on my model kit backlog. Like you said, some panel lining or a wash, some detail painting and you can pretty much have an amazing looking Mando. Honestly I don't think it would take much work. Detail painting instead of using some of those awful sticker decals would do this kit proper justice. Too bad this didn't come with a little scale Grogu. Knowing Bandai, they'll release a Premium version that comes with the little guy.
If you thought this was cool definitely get one. I can't recommend this enough, you can get vehicles too I have a few x-wings and tie fighters. Also pretty cheep you can find them for about $25 -$30 on amazon
I think you're missing out on the arm raise, usually (at least with Gunpla) you lift the shoulder pad first, then you should be able to get a decent arm lift. This looks nice, but there are a lot of articulation issues that shouldn't be there. They could have put in a cuff for the ugly shoulder extensions, the holster and hip flap should have been on a ball joint, that knee bend is pathetic, and the gaps in the ab crunch should be a rounded torso going into a concave waist (which would also fix the bandolier since they could actually secure the ends.
There’s gotta be a type of paint or something to make the brown material look like cloth maybe spray it with brown paint and while the paint is still wet put on some felt dust I don’t know how to think about it and give it some Practice
Not a bad looking kit. I built the Boba Fett and thought that one was decent as well. Since then I've built close to 40 Bandai kits including Star Wars and Gundam kits. I really wish Bandai would settle on molding capes out of plastic. The Boba Fett cape was molded and looked fine as was Vader of course. I've avoided buying a couple of really nice Gundam models because they used fabric and it just doesn't look good. Surprisingly, this one looks much better than I expected. The stickers are another thing. I usually toss them now and buy third party water slides. Not sure if they exist for the Star Wars kits. It's a shame they don't include both like they do with the Millennium Falcon and X Wings. A panel line marker would probably bring out some of those nice details in the armor.
In front page of the manual you can always see which parts of the runner is crossed out, which means those are excess pieces compared to the kit, like most gunpla kit manuals. I can comprehend not all reviewers have model display stand. Like most kits, if you are kit builder you would have gundam paint marker to paint those those parts instead of using the decals, except the big piece right there. Even for the Kamen rider series kits would need a lot of attention to detail. But over thanks for the great review.
Something cool I did with my Mando model I took his pulse rifle gripping hand and used it with his pistol to make it look like he is whipping his pistol out of the holster and I posed him accordingly
Dang I just realized that Santa bought me the matte one. Now I gotta figure out how to paint it. I've never painted anything before so I'm probably screwed lol.
Looking forward to Robo's inevitable Mandalorian comparison video. We seem to think alike about action figures (for the most part). I blame him for me getting Rogue One Darth Vader, but it's ok: that's my favorite Vader figure.
The reason he comes with extra parts are because they reused some parts from the boba kit, so they kept those in, same thing happened with the rise of sky walker re released first order trooper, which came with parts from the executioner kit, as they use all the white armor parts
Yeah, I realized that after the fact, when I found the hole in the right bicep matches the Boba kit. It's been so long since I've messed with those....
So some kits are made from the same frame so if you were to buy the Gundam Dynames and Kyrios there’s dynames parts on the Kyrios runner so since Boba is a mando they used his kit as a base for Din
Must say I'm disappointed by the 'Silver Coating'. By the looks of the promo images, I thought it was going to be a mirrored finish. This however seems like someting you could easily reproduce at a fraction of the extra the kit costs (at least here in the UK).
Like I said, the promo images are always professionally painted, although they could have easily went mirror finish like C-3PO but were probably afraid to because of the way they were mounted.
I found these new decals were a great idea, implemented not great. I've built a lot of Bandai kits. I was hoping to just build it up and display it. I ended up painted alot of those pieces that required those ridiculous little silver stickers. I'm glad you got them on there good.
@The Fwoosh Thank for the vid! I just got a few of these on sale at Hobby Lobby (right after the ones I ordered from Amazon FINALLY showed up) and got part way through when I realized the hands needed painting etc. Great job on that long brown decal too! I gave up after awhile. Are you going to do a video on repainting this kit at all? Haven't don't a kit in 20 years so wouldn't know where to start. Edit: Also great job on the darksaber. Didn't go well in my end and now I'll be painting it somehow since the sticker is now shot.
Great build and review Robo, but of all the things, the giant decal for the sword kills this dead for me. It looks great once it's all said and done. Looks great unpainted. And the build/articulation is what it is... but yeah... Bless you for having the patience for those decals.
Looks great, even straight out of the box!

On the other hand, those parts are a custom builder's best friend due to having spare parts to use for kitbashing and whatnot.
I think this looks WAY better than the SH figuarts mando.
Slightly large but WAY better proportions.

I've got this but I'm terrified to start it lol
The reason he comes with extra parts are because they reused some parts from the boba kit, so they kept those in, same thing happened with the rise of sky walker re released first order trooper, which came with parts from the executioner kit, as they use all the white armor parts
Yeah, I realized that after the fact, when I found the hole in the right bicep matches the Boba kit. It's been so long since I've messed with those....
I think the saber would have looked better with the silver pen
I have both in hand and honestly, I like the SH figuarts more.
Now that we got a Mando from Mandalorian…maybe Bandai could give us a IG-11/88 Model kit.
Maybe ..miracles can happen…we’ve only been asking forever
Gah, how did I forget to mention that? NEED IG kits!
I'd like to see a Paz Vizla
Any suggestions for finding third party dark sabers and spear? I think they will go well with the Mafex Mando.
Johnwalkercustoms sells 3d printed spears and darksabers, the spears are sold out at the moment though.
@@DtLS Thanks for the info, mate!
I also think I’m going to use my black series bandolier and belt.
Hobby Lobby has these right now. To my surprise I found three or four the other night for 69.99 40% off. My wife snagged it for me for Christmas.
Yeah, I'm probably going to end up taking that sword decal back off and painting the energy effect.
