Nice work. So well thought out. Thanks for showing the placement of your temp probe just below the top grate. Also thanks for explainig the lower adjustable vent to modulate the air flow if need be. I will use this info for the pellet fed Ugly Drum Smoker I am building.
Hello guys and well done for your video ! I have made a refrigerator pellet smoker like yours but i can t get even temperature between the lower and the upper racks! What can i do to solve this problem? Thanks.
Any heat resistant sealant will work . I found this www.amazon.com/Red-Devil-08090I-Resistant-Silicone/dp/B009EC5ELK/ref=asc_df_B009EC5ELK/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=192217280775&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16651284621394145111&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9021444&hvtargid=pla-304485731026&psc=1
what did you do to cut the square hole for pellet auger, noticed you also taped it to seal the gap, did you use a jig saw or Sawzall did you cut both at once or individually. I just got my 1950 fridge, replaced bottom pan (rust) new insulation going in this weekend and ready to start drilling and ordering pellet hopper from you. Thanks Don
I do not recommend using the burner assembly burn pot next to any plastic material.. Also all plastic material should be removed. If you have any more questions please give us a call at 847-336-1329 Thanks Dennis
What thickness of gasket did you use? I converted an old refrigerator almost exactly like this one but I still need some heat gasket for the door. As of right now, I have almost a 3/4" gap that needs to be sealed. Did you have to adjust the door on the hinges at all to make it close more? At the very least, I thought about doing what you did by putting it on the door and the fridge itself to create that seal. I was thinking about going with a 1/2" thick rope gasket. Any recommendations? I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
You could try putting a 1/4" shim under the gasket to bring it out a little. I kinda like having a little gap to help with the air flow and temperature maintenance some of these refrigerator build are to well insulated and need the extra air flow. if anyone has any questions and would like to call me call 847-336-1329 and I would be happy to help you. What about using a regular kitchen oven with smoking chips/pellets in the bottom? I have an old one that I want try it with. The top part of the stove is no good, so I'm thinking of drilling a couple small holes in the top and use it as an electric smoker. The oven has a heating element in the top & bottom. If put a metal tray with chips/pellets directly onto the bottom element that would create the smoke and top element would do most of the cooking. 🤔
The best fridge to use is a old one from around the 50s also make sure it is metal lined. If the insulation is made from fiber glass that is the best. If you are not sure if the insulation will hold up I would put a piece of it in a 400 degree oven and watch and see what it dose. If it melts you should not use it. I know you do not BBQ at 400 degrees but to be safe that's what I recommend.
This is a metal lined commercial fridge. I will be checking the insulation today as I take the back off. Thanks for the tip about testing the insulation.
Working on my fridge now. It has like a thick cardboard in between for insulation. Should I try to rip it all out or will it be fine if i leave it? Thanks
I would remove it just to be safe. I would not try and insulate it a double wall should be plenty. Give me a call if you like 847-336-1329 Thanks Dennis
It appears that the original fridge racks were chromed and not stainless. Am I wrong, and/or is it ok to use the chromed racks bring the operating temps are fairly low. I know you can't cook over open flame on a chromed rack. Asking to be sure I understand correctly. Thanks and a great build!
Yes you can replace it with fireproof insulation or just leave it without any insulation, You are only trying to keep the temperature between 160 to maybe 275 for smoking.
My understanding of cold smoking is. When cold smoking you want to have good air flow and you want to keep the moisture very low. In a cold sealed fridge you would have high moisture and no air flow. I hope this helps.
Do I have to bother about the white paint used inside the fridge? Should I bring all the interior to bare metal than season it or I'm good to go with the painted interior?
Always check your brand of refrigerator for any undesirable insulation. Also check for material that may gas off at high temps like foam or plastic. As the bulider you will have to make that decision for your particular applacation. Remmber Safety First
Cool!! I think using a old oven is a great Idea for making a smoker. You do not have to worry about the insulation and it already comes with the rack . Please send pictures to us at Smokedaddyinc@msn.com I would like to post them on our site.
The drip edge that you used around the edges where you replaced the plastic pieces...was it galvanized? Seems about all I can find at Home Depot or Lowes is galvanized and I didn't figure galvanized was a great choice for the smoker. Maybe it doesn't get hot enough. Just curious. I can't seem to find anything except galvanized.
I used aluminum flashing and aluminium siding comers.to cover any openings I also used some aluminium tape. I don't think you will be getting it hot enough to be a problem.
Cool build, I think you could have maximized space installing the pellet hopper to enter below the floor of the fridge utilising the space where the refrigerator components were.
+farknaz I think an old oven would make a great smoker. If I find one I will convert it to a Pellet Pro smoker. I think all you would have to do is position the burn pot where the existing burner is. If someone wants to make one out of a old oven let me know I can help you out. Call 847-336-1329 Dennis
I mean my smokehouse out of nothing but oakwood it was pieces from to put flooring in houses it took me 74 hours to make it in labor I like milk wood flooring but it's very hard to find now these days now they make everything out of plastic but yes I like your idea I'm refrigerator I could put 13 briskets in mine and around 200 pounds of chicken sausage hot glue hanging from the ceiling and I don't know how much more a lot of people makes their out of cedar but I don't like cedar I like oak we can do something right make it right I'm in a lot of people like the smell of cedar but I don't all like my foot smell like cedar

I have a lot of oak wood to make a smokehouse liver needs one just I charge just the labor I don't know how to put a picture on here but yes I made it work for the fire department and HoustonTexas and they love theirs can I make work with Dallas fire department as well
As long as the insulation is not a foam type or anything that is flammable, you can use the insulation that the refrigerator originally came with. In this case, it's fiberglass insulation which is not flammable and is safe to use with these custom smoker builds.
That guy with the bandana on, sure knows how to build a smoker that looks good and works great.. Keep up the great work.
What did you use for the chimney and where can I find some. I bought the same fridge for $60. This going to be a project for my son and I.
Wet and wash oak & cherry pallet boards, that smoke will take so much flavor into those boards and meat.

What is the temp range of this type of smoker?? I like to smoke summer sausage at 120 and 130 before I ramp it up.
Hello guys and well done for your video ! I have made a refrigerator pellet smoker like yours but i can t get even temperature between the lower and the upper racks! What can i do to solve this problem? Thanks.
Hi we do offer a convection fan that will help even out your temps from top to bottom. check it out smokedaddyinc.com/product/convection-fan/
some commercial fridges are all stainless steel inside and out and would also make great smokers with huge capacity with already built in racks.
Yes I watch this video a few times just have a question on the red sealant around the vents for the top what is it where do I get it

I'm gonna cover a bakery tray rack tray with wood so that it's portable, sturdy and lightweight
Awesome videos appreciate that I have found a 1943 deep freeze all metal line Chess type Do you think it would be a great smoker to hang sausages in ?
Yes that would make a great smoker.
do you put anything under the burner between the fridge so it doesn’t melt under burner

Put a stamped grill, non adjustable on the inside to hide those off holes , and drill the discharge holes from inside out to avoid the measurements
Great viseo, do you guys keeps the original insulation or do you replace it with fireproof insulation?
Yes you can replace it with fireproof insulation or just leave it without any insulation, You are only trying to keep the temperature between 160 to maybe 275 for smoking.
Why would cold smoking be bad with the fridge running... being able to smoke for a day or two?
My understanding of cold smoking is. When cold smoking you want to have good air flow and you want to keep the moisture very low. In a cold sealed fridge you would have high moisture and no air flow.

Where is the fan?. Does the pellet pro have a fan?

What metal did y’all use for the door? Is it just stainless steel roll? I’ve been trying to find some
We used stainless you can use steel.Steel is much eraser to work with and much cheaper. And if you use a little vegetable oil on it to will work fine
No unfortunately we only sell them in the US we can ship them to Canada if you prefer
did you guys keep the insulation in?
Nicole Deamaral
He said they took it all out and used it to knit a sweater for his dog... Didn't you watch the video???
Any asbestos concerns with old insulation?
Always check your brand of refrigerator for any undesirable insulation. Also check for material that may gas off at high temps like foam or plastic. As the bulider you will have to make that decision for your particular applacation.

I didn't see any smoke.

Im sorry Andy...but you are trying to look like a "badass Jesse James bike builder"....is not working dude.
