The Sun is a powerful source of energy that affects climate, weather and even the way technology works on Earth. A solar flare can release 100,000 times more energy in a few minutes than our planet produces in a year. Because of solar flares, radio communications and navigation can fail, and satellite orbits have to be adjusted.
The most powerful recorded geomagnetic storm occurred in 1859 - it disrupted the telegraph in Europe and America. If such an event happens again today, experts estimate that it will take ten years to restore infrastructure and economy, and financial losses will amount to several trillion dollars.
