Going hybrid really just seems like a compromise for this car. Less boot space, more weight, jerky throttle reaction, it all just makes it feel like it wasn't meant to be sold, it's not ready. I'd just go for a regular GT63 S and maybe tune it for more power.

I used to be a car salesman, and a auto logistics guy, and then did time as an insurance adjuster...all while being a car fan. All I can say from my combined experience is that simpler is simply better. I know that big budget cars are often for non-car folk, dolled up glamour wives, etc...but my experience is simply that all the excessive options and tech just end up being wasted money and massively, eye-wateringly expensive to repair ---- ending with a car that even poorer people can't afford when it breaks in 10-15 years. There's going to be a bizarro world of scrap yards filled with $100,000 electro-luxury-barges that no one can bother to fix/replace in the future.

Remember when mat reviewd the GT 4 door and it got 11.9 seconds on quarter mile but afterwards in a drag race it did 11.1 seconds, he did it in the same track and mat did the quter mile in 10.75 so that means it can go faster in a drag race
@@henzo7087 maybe a heavily tuned and modded M5 CS, but not stock. Even the almighty M8 Competition isn’t that fast, and it has the same motor. Something like a GT500, SRT Super Stock, or a high-end 911 could do that, but not an M5 CS.
Somehow I just feel the regular V8 is the pick of the bunch. More practical, no way near as heavy and less expensive but, still great looks and performance.
I got excited about 843hp, finally this V8 has bigger turbos and is more powerful! But no, they've added a battery box to make the car heavier. Like new hybrid WRC cars, drivers are forced to race with ridiculously heavy boxes which can give extra power for about 30 seconds and after that you are just carrying extra weight. This is Einstein science in 2022.

To produce a car with essentially the same drivetrain layout (reversed), less than $200k, that’s smooth and actually works with technology from 10 years ago. Put some respect on the new NSX name…

kayaking northeast lol 80 was a exaggeration, we full tanked it in Birmingham, foot down all the way around 3am on the m40. Got home to London and reserve light was back on. About a 110/120 mile journey
So with all the complexity and future higher repair costs (due to the hybrid engine), you only gain 0.3sec. of performance over the 63 S. Not worth it IMO.
You'd actually save on maintenance costs since engine would be chilling at near idle most of the time. Not to mention you'd be using less brakes coz of re-gen

Having had a problem with the baby AMG in the electronics department and Mercedes being unable to find out what’s wrong with it, I can see these being a nightmare if anything goes wrong…
This car looks like a lot of good ideas half implemented. I'd love one of the normal V8 ones without the muted exhausts and extra weight. But if I could afford such a thing... I'd have an M5 CS instead...

Great thorough review on the GT 63 S Mat. Id also prefer the M5 CS however The issue with the MS CS isnt the car its the availability....impossible to get and people bought only to sell grey market asking for far more than this merc.
Idk where you live but the M5CS isn’t that hard to find anymore. There are 2 brand new ones for sale near me so it appears they are making more I think going forward from 2022 because they used to be insanely rare

Hybrids are just a placebo, especially plug in hybrids. Like you said 200kg of useless mpg killing weight. 200kg is a lot of extra weight to lug about and I bet with the extra weight of the battery an motor comes more structural bracing adding more weight killing even more mpg for not a lot gain. Probably 300-400 kg heavier than the car needs to be , removing that weight alone would be the equivalent of 200hp extra, the difference between 2.2t and 1.8t is a massive performance jump.
Problem is these cars were forced into using em to meet emission standards. Look at what they’ve done to the c63s amg… u think they wanted to remove the v8?

@@r35spectgt-r84 its not. its the same Design in the Front but if you ever sat in them you would realize that the door panels are different as well as some knobs. the stitching on the s-class is better and its not exactly the same materials (s-class can be equipped with Merino Leather). Also the Cls and s-class are very Similar. thats because the e-class, cls, s-class and amg gt all share parts. but saying its the SAME interior as the s-class is wrong and you should know that. the Amg gt shares its Platform with the cls and not the s-class and its hidden in the Details and the cabin feel.
Stock BMW M5cs have done 0-60 in 2.6 and the 1/4 mile in 10.6... The times for this particular GT63 S E Performance are very disappointing for a car with awd, 843 hp and 1000+ lbs of torque. It's not much faster than the standard GT 63s. I'm sure further test will come in much faster...it has to.

8 miles is not enough for around town. My wife's Cayenne S e-hybrid only does 11 when it gets really cold in the deep of winter (below 0 F), and that is barely enough for many local trips. In summer it can do 17-20, and that's fine. I think 30-40 would be ideal and to the point of diminishing returns.

I love those wheels sooooo much. It looks like you have a smaller diameter wheel with more rubber but it can still house giant brakes. Best of both worlds.
This is exactly a weird disadvantage. Bigger wheels looks allways so much better. It doesn't make absolutly no sense at all to let them appear smaller😂

It's how the size of the wheel look with the thickness of the sidewall and how the brakes fill up the inside of the wheel and how everything fill up the fender. It's all about proportions. I for one do not like the 21-23 inch wheels with tires that look like they're barely there.
I love this car but I think that the M5 CS is still better given the gap in power between the two (208HP for the AMG) but only 0.1 sec quicker. I think also that the M5 CS is a better driver's car dynamically speaking.

It amazes me how no matter what power these cars have the 0 -60 can only get so good , you can basically have a tuned second hand hot hatch that has hundreds of HP less that is almost as quick
I’m getting better times with my E63s , it’s tuned but not aggressive tune , doing about 590 HP to the wheels , but I have transmission tune and cpc . I ya downpours 0-60 is 2.7 2.8. 1/4 is 10.7 - 10.8. 2018 e63s wagon . It sounds 100x better too

They’re both admirable cars in their own rights. But I can see where Mat is coming from. The price difference really doesn’t seem worth it. Whichever one you prefer personally, it is a hard stretch to justify the massive price leap when the performance isn’t that much more. And personally I think that the M5cs will hold its value and status for a long time to come.

People tend to forget that hybrid tech is subsidized in some countries. That can mean the difference in road tax from 3500€ down to 300€ (at least where I live).
Sure seems like it's best to save the frustration and money and get the 639hp version. If it was tuned better and maybe a 20kw capacity, it could be something, but and 6kw and from your test drive, it's pretty clear all they were going for to to be able to claim the line has a hybrid available for marketing wank.

@@monebone1able The point of this hybrid is to ease into the transition that AMG would have to go from ICE cars to EVs in the near future and let's face it, the future is hybrids or EV's. Also, iirc this is AMG's first attempt in making a PHEV and compare it to something equivalent like a Panamera turbo S E-hybrid then both cars weigh nearly the same, so the comparison with the M5 is actually wrong here. Edit: The power to weight ratio (on paper) is marginally better for the AMG compared to the Bimmer and hence the 0.1s difference in 1/4mile times on this channel.
Best thing about this is that because the waiting list for an M5 CS is so long, there will be loads of GT63 available. It is tempting since you can get one quickly.
U can't order one in the US yet and with Mercedes not making any amg in 2021 the list for this car or any v8 amg is going to be long which means over msrp. 🤦♂️

Great thorough review on the GT 63 S Mat. Id also prefer the M5 CS however The issue with the MS CS isnt the car its the availability....impossible to get and people bought only to sell grey market asking for far more than this merc.
Idk where you live but the M5CS isn’t that hard to find anymore. There are 2 brand new ones for sale near me so it appears they are making more I think going forward from 2022 because they used to be insanely rare

Hybrids are just a placebo, especially plug in hybrids. Like you said 200kg of useless mpg killing weight. 200kg is a lot of extra weight to lug about and I bet with the extra weight of the battery an motor comes more structural bracing adding more weight killing even more mpg for not a lot gain. Probably 300-400 kg heavier than the car needs to be , removing that weight alone would be the equivalent of 200hp extra, the difference between 2.2t and 1.8t is a massive performance jump.
Problem is these cars were forced into using em to meet emission standards. Look at what they’ve done to the c63s amg… u think they wanted to remove the v8?

@@r35spectgt-r84 its not. its the same Design in the Front but if you ever sat in them you would realize that the door panels are different as well as some knobs. the stitching on the s-class is better and its not exactly the same materials (s-class can be equipped with Merino Leather). Also the Cls and s-class are very Similar. thats because the e-class, cls, s-class and amg gt all share parts. but saying its the SAME interior as the s-class is wrong and you should know that. the Amg gt shares its Platform with the cls and not the s-class and its hidden in the Details and the cabin feel.

Stock BMW M5cs have done 0-60 in 2.6 and the 1/4 mile in 10.6... The times for this particular GT63 S E Performance are very disappointing for a car with awd, 843 hp and 1000+ lbs of torque. It's not much faster than the standard GT 63s. I'm sure further test will come in much faster...it has to.

Honestly speaking I just jumped to the 0-60 launch.
8 miles is not enough for around town. My wife's Cayenne S e-hybrid only does 11 when it gets really cold in the deep of winter (below 0 F), and that is barely enough for many local trips. In summer it can do 17-20, and that's fine. I think 30-40 would be ideal and to the point of diminishing returns.

@@jojajo2707 It's not the wheel size in general. It's how the size of the wheel look with the thickness of the sidewall and how the brakes fill up the inside of the wheel and how everything fill up the fender. It's all about proportions.

I love this car but I think that the M5 CS is still better given the gap in power between the two (208HP for the AMG) but only 0.1 sec quicker. I think also that the M5 CS is a better driver's car dynamically speaking.
There's a difference of about 500kg between the weights of the two cars.

They’re both admirable cars in their own rights. But I can see where Mat is coming from. The price difference really doesn’t seem worth it. Whichever one you prefer personally, it is a hard stretch to justify the massive price leap when the performance isn’t that much more. People tend to forget that hybrid tech is subsidized in some countries. That can mean the difference in road tax from 3500€ down to 300€ (at least where I live).

If it was tuned better and maybe a 20kw capacity, it could be something, but and 6kw and from your test drive, it's pretty clear all they were going for to to be able to claim the line has a hybrid available for marketing wank.

Also, iirc this is AMG's first attempt in making a PHEV and compare it to something equivalent like a Panamera turbo S E-hybrid then both cars weigh nearly the same, so the comparison with the M5 is actually wrong here.
Edit: The power to weight ratio (on paper) is marginally better for the AMG compared to the Bimmer and hence the 0.1s difference in 1/4mile times on this channel.
