  • In African Cultural practices and Spiritual beliefs, the midnight hour is understood as the hour where spirits begin to roam the earth. This piece is symbolic to the preparation of the chosen one to carry the message of the ancestors to the Salaka/Saraca Feast. Salaka or Saraca as it is so called is a thanksgiving to the ancestors for all they have blessed them with over the previous year. The tolling of the bell at the beginning of this dance speaks to midnight and the calling of the ancestors to enter the sacred space where spirits gather from such time. This preparation takes the form of molding and preparing the body to a figure that exudes the energy and strength of our forefathers.
