SAT has 30 gates, and if you get there an hour before boarding you are really risking your hide. ORD has about 200 gates and you won't catch me even getting a layover there unless I have at least an hour between flights. With bag check and TSA included, 3 hours is the least you should do. Context _really_ matters when flying.
Another reason to bring a power bank is because the charging stands and even USB ports found around a place like an airport can actually be hijacked to steal data from your phone. Not sure how often it happens but it’s definitely possible and not unheard of. Best ways to avoid it are bringing a power bank or using your own cube plugged into a power outlet.

An personal tip of mine. Check with tour banks to see if your credit card gives you free VIP lounge access. This way you go there for free, gets more comfort while waiting, FREE FOOD (and good quality food), free drinks and so on.

Just something to know at least where I've gone, they close the entry to the plane 15 minutes before the departure time. So if your flight leaves at 12:30 you have to be at the gate getting on the plane at the absolute latest 12:15. But I'd suggest getting there way earlier then that obviously.
