    The silver stuff you said you struggled to get hold of is readily available on UK eBay so it might be worth looking on Australian eBay in future.
    It's sold as a few different things, closed cell foil backed foam, sticky back foam, van insulation, etc. etc. I've used quite a bit in my Defender and have used some in conjuction with some foamboard to create a freezer compartment in my single zone fridge.

  • @MiniLuv-1984
    @MiniLuv-1984 7 років тому

    Hey Ronnie - thanks again, great info. The aluminium reflector on the insulation will only help keep the heat in the cabinet - its not necessary for insulating against heat from outside. What you can put in is ordinary EPS foam as thick as you can fit in and ofcourse, making sure the cabinet is air tight. 10mm of foam is far too little. Good bullshit removal on the parabolics...

    That Redarc Manager 30 looks nice (@ about 23:35). However I notice it will draw down the Starter battery to 12.7v ...
    On my truck, I'm using a CTek D250S which has a similar issue. I installed a relay, triggered by the ignition to disconnect the Starter battery (from the CTek) when the ignition is off. (That way I can also keep the Starter battery charged via its own solar setup and not start/move the vehicle for weeks.)

    • @Ronny_Dahl
      @Ronny_Dahl  7 років тому +1

      +Geoff Lee I think I can do that in the settings on the unit and if not a simple relay will do the trick.
      BUT I'm 95% it doesn't draw from the starter unless it's running as preset standard. My front running batteries are normally 12.5-7 when engine is off.

    • @bossybill7437
      @bossybill7437 7 років тому

      It's probably okay for most people that only the 'float' is taken off the Starter battery but in my situation, I often do not start my truck for extended periods... Days at a time when bush (being a gold prospector rather than 4-wheeler, per say) and also why I've a separate solar setup for the starter battery.
      (Yes, a new starter battery will easily sit for a few weeks unused and still crank over easily, however, most starting batteries are not new but keeping them topped up will help extend their lives. )

    Hi Ronny, I was surprised to see that you have 3 leaf parabolic springs (thinking you would have the 4 leaf)....I am having my parabolic springs fitted this wednesday 7th June. Westralia springs recommended that I run with the HD 4 leaf. I'm fitting them to my 76 series. You are absolutely right when you said that there is no positive feedback for the parabolics. Nobody rated them (all the big names) Westralia were very helpful. New wheels on the thursday after... i'm so keen to try them out the long weekend here on the east coat. Good work on the vid too Ronny.

    Parabolics are a common upgrade on early series land rover here in the UK. Gives ride quality and suspension flex similar to that of the later coil sprung defender but the dampers need upgrading to control the extra freedom of movement but i think you have that covered. :)

  • @FsJuicyJ

    Another suggestion for an anti slip for your table would be skateboard grip tape. That'd be much more permanent than a small strip, but it's cheap and you can cut it to size, while also being very thin, and it's readily available online or at a local skate shop.

  • @lloydw.3950

    Hi Ronny...Liking the truck build so far...I'm just so envious on so many levels. I have a question (while not strictly related to this video) that I was hoping you could shed some light on. At the start of this video there is a clip where you are towing a Patrol using an equalizer strap. Is it safe to use a tree trunk protector as an equalizer strap and if not why (one review I saw said never do this as the strap is not designed for load in the middle of the strap but isn't that exactly where the tree would put load?). From my research the tree trunk straps are both longer and stronger - the longer strap I feel would be better as it would reduce the amount of inward pressure on the chassis rails. What is your considered opinion as I have read reviews that give conflicting answers. Thanks in advance, Lloyd.

    with the fridge tray you can get them with drop down levers so they are at a better height also the soft shackle is a great idea but if it flies at you you may still get hurt as with anything of that nature only in this case less so

    • @Ronny_Dahl
      @Ronny_Dahl  7 років тому

      +dtec30 drop down slide would take up too much space. I should have shot this on level ground as I can actually reach the bottom of it and look into it.

    • @dtec30
      @dtec30 7 років тому

      space as in height or width ? the ones i have seen with other peoples set ups are quite good not too sure how they go in practice tho, the one i remember seeing has a front bar that you use to pull out the fridge then using the same bar lower it down once it has reached end of travel. but i'm guessing you would have done plenty of research before deciding on your setup and as with all of this stuff it will change as your needs and priorities change too i dont mean any disrespect it was just an observation on my part.

    Damn... Looks like you won't be getting the JMAX coil conversion kit anymore since you've got more flex out of the parabolics now. A pity cause I was really looking forward to see this cruiser having coils on all 4. Still awesome mod on the rear axle! Looking forward for stage 6!

    Ronnie, Nissan/Datsun trialed parabolic springs on the MQ Patrol way back in 1980. Dismal failure. How do I know, because I owned one personally and had lots of contact with other owners in the club at the time. They were not successful for a couple of reasons. As time went on, the parabolic leaves began to lose temper and sag. They were also noisy when the leaves clashed on the override pads, and the more they sagged, the more they clashed. Then they started to have a few breakages. Now, if you have a spring pack that has five, six or more individual leaves and one breaks, not a huge deal and can usually limp hone. But a parabolic leaf failure is dramatic, because there are less leaves in the stack, usually only two or three. Limping home is not going to happen. Same reason heavy transport trucks went away from them. Nissan, under warranty, had to replace thousands of spring packs over two to three years. They then went through a cycle of several different spring set ups in the early '80's, in an effort to sort a decent suspension for the Patrol. By the time of 1985 MK model run, they had returned to parallel leaves, multiple stacked. By which time, the coil sprung GQ was well and truely on the test mules and leaf springs were going the way of the doo-doo bird anyway. For the fabricated rear axle housing, great to see you have rectified one of Toyota's f&@#k ups!! Why didn't you fix the hand brake while you were at it!!!!

  • @ozyprospector
    @ozyprospector 7 років тому

    Nice mods Ronny i have a fidge up front i used a drop slide but i still need a little step for the mrs too lol. Did you look at the rear coil conversion setup before going the parabolics? I've used the super spring on rear with ome springs and liking it so far over previous airbags and sax springs. Be interesting how your parabolics go on ruff terrain nothings indestructible but its how long they last before the break and you have more flex anyways so thats a bonus over std leafs

    • @Ronny_Dahl

      +Rory Somerville I committed to leaf as it's only 25% of what the coil kit would end up costing. I can't justify that amount to spend on one part of the vehicle. Super happy with parabolic suspension and with lockers it's just as good in my opinion.

    Super Video. Love all the mods, very practical and functional. The leaf springs I believe can take in more weight too? You can keep a pair incase one snaps.
    Q1. Why two fridges? Any benefit over having a single unit?
    Q2. Whats on the other side? Tools? How important is it to balance both sides, weight wise? is that taken into account during wheel rotation, alignment, air pressure,etc.?
    Suggestion:
    S1: Could you add links to all your other mod stages in the description?
    S2: Could the same enthusiasm and detail level be brought in, in all your Mod videos? Some videos seem as if the owner is disinterested in talking about his rig and its clear you are trying to fill in for him :).
    PS: I am a total noob, heck don't even own a 4x4, but love them and want to have one, so please disregard any point above if its too stupid.

    Ronny, I don't know if you go over this in another video, but what sort of comms are you using? Long range vs. short range (HF vs, V/UHF... Other ham radio setups...). I am currently building up my rig in the USA, and out here there are very few places that don't have some sort of 2-meter radio repeater, so the longer frequencies are not really needed from a safety standpoint in an off-road vehicle.

    - the rear e brake system that is located inside the drum/disc at the back - do you get lots of dust in there and how often do you clean them
    - do you have any protection for your prop shaft ? ive seen a few guys here in the Caribbean have bent ones from off road use.
    - i would like to add some extra fuel tanks like you do, how do you feed the fuel to the engine ? is it gravity to the original tank or do you have a separate pump ?
    - are the batteries located near the pantry section of the new box ?
    - engine bay : ever considered water injection to your engine (please ask PDP to share their knowledge on this one as well )
    these are my questions - thank for the vids bro..
    keep up the good work.
    also i will send you a modified vid of my new rig when completed. its a Mitsubishi L200 Dcab made for off road service and repair of generators and heavy duty equipment.
    your vids have given me many ideas and knowledge
    i thank you Ronny !!

      +gruhlruben it's a RM Williams jacket given to me by a follower/fan. Should be in their catalog or online store. Awesome jacket for cool days

    Why not 4 link the rear? There would be a lot more flex and you could run coilovers

    Looks great mate! How do you find the breaks on the 79? I have heard they're not great and the JMAX kit is required ?

    Hi Ronny, your land cruiser is a beast. I know you guys aren't fond of Jeeps, but can you recommend suspension options that help on corrugated roads?

      +itsbobbyagain any shock with remote canisters should be fine IF they can be serviced in your local area (find out where exactly so you don't just get the old 'yeah mate')
      And keep in mind the price, cheap is not good medium price to high and you'll only do it once if that makes sense.

      Thanks Ronny, we have a few 4X4 shops here in the Denver Colorado area. I'll ask around if they can service remote canister shocks. I'm at stage .5 of getting my rig set up. My goal is to get the best rig set up (I can afford) for my region (Colorado/Utah) the first time. Thanks for the reply, just signed up on Patreon, please keep the great videos coming!
      Edit: forgot to ask, what do you think of OME shocks?
