It made me wonder about if any of those stars on that rollercoaster could have planets and if so, imagine what their realities would be!
The polarization and magnetic field observations are fascinating. It reminds me of a tokamak fusion reactor where a magnetic field keeps the bean centered inside the toroid… except it is a sort of self-focusing effect where the massive beam creates the magnetic field…that keeps it focused and “inside the toroid.” Wild.

I love your content! I'm a molecular biologists so it's nice to have these concepts and new studies explained in a professional and precise way. Having said that my ears perked when you mentioned something being proven. I don't know if I am just a stickler for these kinds of things but would it not be more precise to say something like "officially supported by data"? or maybe these findings are more substantial than I understand.
I don't think "proven" is s word that was used in the primary literature. I think Anton was using the word in a more colloquial sense.
Basically, it looked like a black hole, quacked like a black hole, and smelt like a black hole, so . . .
Besides, something that is dark in visible light, is extremely massive but also extremely compact, is pretty much the definition of a black hole.

First pic makes headlines all around the world. Second pic is not even heard about.
That's because Dr. Katherine Bouman is a female and was given credit. She definately contributed much to it, but it was a team effort with important contributions from Andrew Chael and many others. It's probably because there is a trend to promote females and minorities whenever possible, coupled with it being the first "photo" of Sagittarius A.
@@brianwesley28it's not because she was female. It's because she was the leader of making the CHIRP algorithm used in the project.
@@EmmaHopman Katherine Bouman was a grad student working on it. She became famous after her supervisor choose her for presenting the team's work in a TED talk. And all these has nothing to do why the first image got so famous and the subsequent ones are unheard off. The main reason is - any 'first' achievement always makes the news. How many gravitational wave detection makes news anymore? But those are detected regularly nonetheless.

It always makes my brain stutter when I think about the time it takes for light to reach us. Seeing how much life evolution occurred in 250 million years, when that light was produced, just is crazy to me.
The scope of time and space involved in these videos is always so vast, it feels like a discussion that gods would have amongst each other

I always end up trying to image what we don’t know- like what would another intelligent species have to say about their observations of the universe. How much don’t we know?
Not only our earth and solar system, but now our galaxy has been demonstrated to be rare, if not unique. All this seems to have contributed to our survival as a species. I do not claim to know if that means anything except to state that humanity is extremely fortunate.

It is a shame that they couldn't find the funding to keep the SOFIA telescope operating. It produced a lot of useful astronomical data for relatively low cost, particularly for the part of the sky viewable from the Southern Hemisphere where there are fewer major observatories.
When operating in southern skies it used to fly out of the Christchurch, New Zealand, which is my home town.
Perhaps the taxpayers of New Zealand, Australia, the EU, Canada, etc. would pay for Sophia's operation?
JWST does cover the same spectrum, with much better resolution. But having a cheaper platform still going would be nice, too, as the JWST is booked solid, I'm sure.

Makes you think the gravitational form around the black hole resembles a donut instead of a sphere then surrounded by another accretion disk that also looks similar to a donut made of magnetic fields. kind of like a 3-dimensional infinity symbol both of these are locked into a plane almost gyroscopically controlled by the spin of the gravitational center of the black hole. What is interesting is all the matter close to that black hole is literally frozen in time by the gravitational/magnetic twisting of spacetime.
Pretty astute comment. A magnetic field that twists in on itself is a possibility along with other explanations.
Can you explain why the magnetic field appears to be perpendicular to the plane of the galaxy. Wouldn't it be more likely to in the same plane?
Remember that how it appears to look is distorted by the intense gravity around it. Also too, if I remember correctly, the north and south poles point out pretty much perpendicular to the plane of the Milky Way.

They need to seriously zoom out that picture of the blackhole. A Japanese team was complaining not too long ago, why the polar emissions were not included in the picture presented, when the data showed more of than even this region in the center.
For context of the full workings of this field effect being described here, I’d think that part should have been shown here too.

I feel like if you look at a black hole in visible light, there should be a rainbow involved. With light bending around the black hole before reaching the event horizon, red through violet should bend at different radius. Anyone know if different wave lengths react differently to the gravity (space-time)?
What would refract the light? On earth the moisture in the atmosphere does it a black hole has none of those

Isn't JWST in orbit between us and Mars? The radio telescopes on earth or JWST collecting data year-round should give an enormous amount of data between aphelion and perihelion each year. And then the solar system itself is revolving around the centre of the galaxy ...

That’s some fancy stuff, right there.
As beautiful as this composited image rendering is, it is precisely that, selectively filtered data matched to a model to produce a simulated image from 2 pixels worth of actual information. One of the biggest problems with imaging the center of our galaxy is that we don't have an unobstructed view given that we are on an adjacent spiral arm parallel to the galactic plane. There are literally billions of stars and stellar phenomena in-between us and the center (foreground noise) and this must be removed digitally using filters & algorithms that are programmed based on what researchers expect to find in their models. So this is not a single image direct capture in the traditional sense but a composition from many different arrays.
The problem with this technique is we can produce an image of anything we want and just filter out everything we think doesn't match our models, it's the same issue with the CMB imaging data where they have to remove the foreground of our galaxy, without knowing what's actually behind (this is a big no no), then fill in the gaps using algorithms.
To put it another way, imagine we want to image an invisible flower in the center of a forest but a billion bright shining trees are blocking our view, well we can digitally remove the trees and attempt a prediction based on our models of what we believe that invisible flower must look like. We can't directly observe this flower because to us it's invisible (not just black) but we can try to filter out data based on how the invisible flower affects non invisible flowers around it. Bear in mind we must still digitally remove all the trees in between and attempt to remove their contributions as noise, but its very hard to do so in a forest of a billion shining trees.
Strangely enough, it's actually easier to image a distant galaxy millions of LY away than it is to image the center of ours because the signal-to-noise ratio for external galaxies is higher (more signal, less noise). The center of our galaxy is actually where we have the greatest density of stars and stellar phenomena so this region has a much higher noise-to-signal ratio than any other part of our galaxy. When there's more noise than signal, you can't pull a valid image from that data unless you know exactly what the source signal is supposed to look like apriori.
The takeaway here is that these types of images need to be taken with some context in how they are produced. We are compositing multiple signals from different sources to give us a rendering of an image that matches our models, and if we allow that, then we can generate any image we wish by discarding any parts of the signal we believe don't match simply as noise.
I'd recommend watching some videos/lectures from Dr. Pierre Robitaille (SkyScholar channel), who is one of the worlds leading experts in magnetic resonance imaging. He has many valid criticisms in how astronomers are bending/breaking fundamental rules to make beautiful simulated images from signals 100x weaker than the noise around it and shows the math & physics behind why.
It is not "stars and stellar phenomenon" that obscure the galactic center but *gas and dust.* Astrophysicists call this the "zone of avoidance."
Exactly what are these "stellar phenomenon" that obstruct our view of the center of the galaxy?

No because it is taken in radio wavelengths, and of course you can’t take a picture of the galaxy, they reconstruct a map using data, or just draw it from rendition.

You can hear a lot from people who dont actually know what goes on. Like others said...and like what was literally said in the video...the image we see isnt a "picture" like what we normally know from a camera here on earth.
It is the combined data taken from numerous sites across the entire planet, all looking at the exact same spot, taken over multiple, multiple, multiple readings in the X-ray wavelength; that is to say, at a higher wavelength than the visible light we can see with our eyes. Its not a "picture" of the thing they want, just like an xray of your teeth or chest isnt actually a "picture" of your insides- because visible light cannot see through your insides, obviously
Maybe we are slightly above or below the galactic plane of inertia? Just saying.

Why are focused on isolated stars like our's ? A binary system could be an entire light-year apart so our system might appear more similar . If you go to a binary system a light year or 2 appart
The surprise is that everything in reality is electro-magnetic. GR could not have predicted magnetic fields ANYWHERE in space. There is NO black hole ever seen. It’s all magnetic plasma phenomena.
