Cheers man! Yeah I thought there was a lack of good mapping videos for the APC40MKII; so thought I'd make one : D Oh awesome, I'm glad this video is useful for ya mate! No worries, glad it was helpful for you to learn from! Yeah the mapping of this controller really does vary from software to software, I personally think that VJ's have one of the harder times using this controller, especially when comapared with things like Ableton, which it just works with beautifully; so as a VJ I had to get a bit creative to build something that works - one day, I pray for native support hahahahha
@@Doctor_Mush you’ll probably fall down rabbit 🐇 hole 2 lol, especially once you setup your audio/video and triggering from same controller, protocols, etc…in fact I think you can use one APC and map both simultaneously…which would make sense in Lives session view, which is essentially same thing as Resolume view in your video. I’d try it but can’t drop the 💰 for all the Resolume gear just yet so party on mate 🖤😎🙌🐇
Cheers Geco! Yeah it is a bit of a belter of a controller to be fair - still got a few other videos revolved around this controller on the hit list to make too !

Interesting to see your setup I'm so in love with Resolume7 right now they added a feature to used multi midi controllers without using bones midi translato...I was like why do I need this and now I use 3 apc20's controllers and life is good
My Gee!! Always gassed to see a fellow enthuastic Resolume user in the comments ; ) Oh wat no way 3 APC20s sounds sick man; that's a pretty gnarly setup that!!! I'd defo still reccomend getting the ARC Plugin I talk about at the end of the video, turning the 1 controller into 16 of itself!!! And for only like 50quid is really is a steal!! Combine that with your current 3 APC20s, and you'll have a truly unstoppable setup !!! : D
Great video friend, but I have a question. I use the preview a lot before launching the clips. Would there be a way to use the same clip selection buttons but with something like "shift" that while said button is pressed, instead of changing between clips, it changes between clip preview? I don't know if you understand what I mean, it's something like using the same button for two functions as long as a second button is activated or deactivated.
Ah yes, great question! So, using the base APC40 it's not really possible --- annoying I know , for this I'd use the ARC plugin, so you can fully access 16 channels of MIDI! With this you can use channel 1 for say clip triggers, and then use channel 9 as your previews ; then you can simply change between MIDI channels and have both clip trigges, and clip previews : D Hope this helps mate theapc40extender.co.uk/
@@Doctor_Mush Hello, thank you for responding so quickly. but I don't have the apc40, mine is the apc mini mk2. I don't know if arc is compatible in this situation?
@@ffrem Ah yes I meant the MKII ! Yea the plugin is for the MKII, I use it for everything I do, and had a hand in helping the development! : ) It'll definitely solve the preview and clip trigger issue you have : D
excellent video, it makes me wonder if I need an APC40 yes or yes. I currently have a nanoKontrol2 but I don't know why the indicator LEDs don't work for me
I'd say that as a VJ; it feels in many ways like the 'must have' controller. To quote from the Resolume manual itself 'The AKAI APC40 Mk2. End of story. ' ------- Oh really; I haven't had any experience in using the Nanokontrol2 so I can't comment, but having LED indicators is certainly extremely useful! I'd say if you've got the spare money; it is definietly worth having a solid look at getting yourself an APC40MkII !
Oooeerrrr that's a big question pal , I'd reccomend posting on the forums with that one, it could be any number of things !! I would say right off the bat however to make sure that the clips you are using are in the DXV codec, as Resolume can struggle with other codecs ! : )
Ahhh yes with the MK1 yeah you only get the 3 colours unfortunately, but combined with the blinking is technially 6, you can still do some major mapping with 6 ; ) Great controller the MK1 !
@VJHO 😅 aw I figured. Yeah, definitely don't want a million blinking lights. I got everything mapped out great now. Bit want the mk2 for colors and portability. Mk1 is...she thiqq

Hi! Thanks for your video, it helped me a lot for mapping my Akai APC Mini MKII ☺️ But I have a question… When I want to choose a color for layer 1 (for example) I don’t have the color list in the « velocity » menu… Do you have any answer for that ? 🙏🏻
Hello mate!! Awesome glad to hear ti mon! Yeah so there's a few reasons this could be happenin' my first reaction would be have you got any other MIDI controllers plusgged in at the time? Having multiple MIDI controllers can affect the colour menu, but choosing a numbered value should still give you a colour output regardless, hope this helps bud! : D
My Guy!! Yeah I worked hard to corroborate all that info together; many hundreds of hours of MIDI mappings hahahaha - very glad it was useful to you mate : D
Yea completely agree, I always really love to look at how other VJ's have their mappings setup! Unfortunately, it is usually very diffucult information to find hahahaha! Oh yes very interesting, yea I mean if you can get good at doing it then that's still an effective and most importantly cost effective method for VJ'ing! I personally am of the philosophy that, if it can be mapped, then I absolutely want to be mapping it hahahahah! I always find that for me personally, relying on a mouse and keyboard is too limiting because of the lack of physical space you sometimes find in front of house or a gig. If I'm using a MIDI controller, then it just guarntees that I won't be struggling trying to wiggle a mouse in a tiny bit of room hahahaha! That's awesome tho if that's your primary go to setup, you're a braver person that I hahaha - very interesting to hear that : D !!
Hello, Great tutorial. I wanted to share a problem I am having, not sure if it is because of my version of Resolume or because of another setting somewhere I am unaware of but; the problem is that I have mapped the clips to the buttons as described in the video, however, it is only launching the clip not "selecting it" because of this, the target "selected clip" function (with the rotary knobs) isn't work in the way shown in the video. In my version of Resolume there is a two mappings for the clip, they are "clip select" & "clip connect". I did try to make them to the same Botton but it glitches a bit. Any feedback or recommendations would be super appreciated!
Cheers man! Ooo umm okay, first off I am using version Resolume 7, so I can only speak for Resolume 7 here. Okay, so make sure you've definitely created a brand new mapping file, so that you're working on a blank mapping canvas. Make sure that you are mapping the clip box itself, and not the bottom of the clip where the text is. Mapping the text will only preview the clip and not properly select it. -- If it's giving you 2 options then you'd want ' clip connect ' . Can't think of the top of my head why else that wouldn't be working? If not maybe try unintall and re-install Resolume in case there was something corrupted on the download --- let me know how that goes for you pal !
@VJHO Just a small tip for you and everyone watching this… Use Velocity - 60 instead of 9 for a better orange color. 9 looks a bit yellowish to my liking. Enjoy!
How do you get all black and white clips? Is that so you can change the colors easily? Also trying to figure out how to convert free loops to resolume file format. Thanks!
Hello mate! If you wanna get all black and white clips, simply drop a colorize or a tint effect onto the composition tab, and you'll get everything workin' in B&W ; ) Ahhh I've got a video on free loops man , I reccomend giving it a watch and it'll teach you how on there ! : D
Hello matey!! Gassed you found the video useful! :D I've lit just launched my Patreon; and I'll be uploading all of my .XML files onto there!! - check it out my guy! : D
Yes there is, but it would involve manually going and mapping the clip dashboard for every single clip on your composition --- I wouldn't neccisiraly advise this as your mappings can start getting really messy --- it is dooable, but the better approach is just to be organised as you are playing, and remember to reset a clip dashboard when it's done : ) An effective way to do this would be that when you are done with a clip, very quickly preview that clip in the preview monitor so that Resolume selects it, and then press your reset button! Hope this helps : )
