Man, it's been an entire month since I last uploaded.... Welp... Hopefully it won't take as long for the next one, but I can't promise anything. Uni has taken up a lot of my time.
This aired a week after my 11th birthday on TV, I never missed a single episode. Due to that TV channel dissolving shortly after it never ever aired again in my home country due to rights issues. This show had a major impact on me as a child and basically kickstarted my interest in Anime.
Finally someone reviewed this gem! Really an underrated classic. Always viewed it as a prequel since in the manga, she continues her reign and ends up becoming *spoilers* Queen Promethium (GE999)
This series was on our TV back then (Germany) and I really loved it. These drawings, this story, just great! I don't even remember how old I was back then, but after all these years I still have the theme song in my head, which actually came in Japanese. Nothing against Mila Superstar and co, but Queen Millennia was simply incredibly beautiful. and I'm glad that other people actually remember this series. At times I was afraid I had imagined her XD
I grew up watching this for the first time in the late 80s, when it was first aired on German TV. It had a profoundly deep impact on me and I absolutely love it to this day. Last year, it was finally released on DVD here. 1981's Queen Millennia has cult status here in Germany and it's an all-time favorite of many anime fans!
Thanks for this summary! I really enjoyed this show when it aired sometime long ago - and I never got a glimpse of it again! I hope to find the whole show sometime, somewhere!
Sadly getting a hold of the TV version of this show seems pretty much impossible. The only listings I've seen for it has been sold out. However, the sub group Live-Evil does have the entire series subbed, and that seems like the only way to watch it right now
I think a lot of the themes in Leijiverse are people becoming who they don't want to be in order to do what they feel is right. Queen Promethium becoming who she is in GE999 after experiencing this and the tragedy of her planet being in danger.
It's not actually a spiritual successor, but a proper prequel...at least as the manga was written. The ending was changed in the series and movie to prevent that from happening, though.
Queen Millenia was relatively popular in Germany back when I was in school. It was aired two times by the now defunct TV station Tele 5. The problem for the people who want to see the series of their youth is, that in the years that followed, the rights to the dub got lost. Really, nobody knows anymore who the rights for the (really good) dub owns. Fans really tried to find out. Even employed lawyers. But nothing helped. That means with the exception of poor pirated VHS rips it will never again be seen in Germany. Of course they could make a new dub, but that would probably too expensive.
@@joeferreti9442Okay, thanks, I didn't notice. So the series is available again with its original dub. This surprises me. Last time I checked, a DVD edition was announced, first with german dub, then without. Apparently it is back in. I wonder how the legal problems have been resolved. I am glad.
This series has be re-released by Toei as a DVD-box a while ago, like the remastered Captain Harlock box. Has anyone seen the DVD version yet? If so, how's the image quality? The Captain Harlock series did benefit quit a lot from remastering...
I’m so glad you brought up the harmony gold version. Its whole existence is so odd to me. The only interesting thing about it is its lost media status tho
It was my favourite tv show as a kid and I still mention it if somebody asks for my favourite anime series. If I understand correctly in the US the squeezed 2 series into one time slot on tv without enough air time to show both shows. Then they took out some episodes of a show with a continuous story line and also decided to not show the final episode? I used to watch the show on German television as a kid aired in 1991 and they showed one episode twice by mistake, luckily the showed the final episode and a few weeks later the tv stationed was shut down and the series was never broadcasted again. People are still looking for the original German dubbed broadcast tapes, they released some bootleg video cds combining the Japanese LD video with the German dub from VHS recordings. I was looking for the show half my childhood but back in the early 90s not a chance, nobody had recorded the show and then they finally released the laserdiscs in the late 90s.
The time of the closest proximity is 9 minutes and 9 seconds after midnight, not 9 hours. It even says so in the subtitles at the same moment you mention it. A lot of people seem to have the idea that it's 9:09:09, but I don't know why. The original Japanese and the translation to two languages I have seen make it clear that it's just past midnight. It's in the name of the first episode.
Fun Fact: Queen Millennia is more popular than Galaxy Express 999 in Hong Kong, so my grandparents only remember Queen Millennia... btw, you can still watch this on GoGoAnime :)
I went with a friend (the only other guy I knew who liked Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers) to watch the movie version at a friend's house around '86. I was more interested in seeing more anime, so I didn't really click with the story at the time. Thanks for getting this cleared up for me. Did you ever do Godmars? It was the first anime I ever saw a book for, ad I bought it immediately (the stuff was so hard to come by at the time.) I haven't quite puzzled it out.
@@jasonkandahq1003 I'm really enjoying the show, so far. Tbh, I'm just slow when it comes to finishing shows in general 🥲 I feel like that's something I need to get better with
@denkikaminari4826 don't worry too much about it. I went from finishing 100 episode plus animes usually under a week or two to taking even over 6 months to finish even 50 episode shows.😅🥲 but alas I just get on with. It finishes eventually. All the best with the show. It's a real gem.
A show that deals with morality and loyalty in the face of potentially world-ending disaster? Seems a nice premise but not very relevant in these peaceful days of no wars pandemics or even climate change!

One of my favorite anime’s of all time. The movies are absolutely beautiful.
I still need to actually sit down and watch that movie. So far I've only seen the TV series
it's not 'spiritual successor' it is a prequel.
Note that the most 'canon' ending is manga.
Thanks for this review. I loved this show back in the days. Lonesome feel because I had no one to share this experience

I watched this growing up in HK and absolutely loved it. It was both scary and futuristic and the images of those queens still haunt me.

Wow, that’s so sad! I watched it sometime on Tele 5
The German synchronization for "Queen Millennia" is really good!
Gibt es mittlerweile als zwei BluRay Boxen in HD von KSM, sowohl mit deutscher, als auch japanischer Fassung

This cartoon reminds me of my childhood late 80’s
Around the same time. Leiji Matsumoto also wrote 'Drifting Express 000' a parody to Galaxy Express 999.
In 1978, my mom had me too!

Easier in that it's not episodic and not quite as long, yes

Cosmos Dream...
im glad someone knows all this....where does queen emeraldas fit in all this.....i thought she was mayas sister?
In Maetel legend it is shown that she's queen millennia's daughter and Maetel's sister
trench coat man is father of Hoshino Tetsuro (or grandfather)
and G.I. Joes are deployed to steal spaceships in much later episodes.
