I love your approach to hair care. I’m sick of the fear-based approach that keeps us locked into schedules that never really serves US. There seems to be a vested interest in having many BW in a state of terror about how they care for their hair.
I'm sooo excited for your videos! I got my microlocs installed in September of this year and have had them re-tightened once so far by my loctician. I do intend to keep going to the loctitian for a little while just to make sure everything is going well with my hair before the locs start maturing but I have every intention of switching to maintaining my locs myself and your tutorials are so encouraging! Saved to my playlist to come back to when I need them 😊
Ive been switching back and forth too when i do my monthly maintenance. I interlock the length (but not all the way down) and then re-twist the root. Thats what im experimenting with right now :) . Thanks for sharing your journey. Its so refreshing.
1:23 Hi, you stated you have inches of hair that’s not locked after retwisting. My question is; do you think there’s any reason to bother trying the retwist method when you must interlock the new growth anyways? Great video !!
Yes, retwisting does not lock hair! Retwisting provides temporary structure for your locks. It’s like an interlock that washes out. So, instead of having my locs hanging by loose hair, i retwist it. It keeps it neat and keeps me from snagging my fingers in the new growth.
Retwisting does NOT lock your hair. No matter if it’s microlocs or traditional locs. It provides a temporary structure for your loc to prevent breakage and it’s also for aesthetics. Once your hair begins to shed, it matts together and that is what starts the loc. For some this could take months. My hair typically started to loc around month 3-4. Interlocks are permanent and don’t wash out
just out of curiosity why are you going back and forth between retwisting and interlocking them ? especially when putting so much emphasis on sticking to a routine also, is there a benefit to one or the other or are you just kinda trying different things out - i think i’d prefer re twisting micro locs but i’d be nervous that they’d start to swell more than the interlocked portion any insight is appreciated !
Great question. Part of it is just pure experimentation and wanting to see how my hair reacts to different methods! Trial and Error if you will. It’s also very intentional. For instance I started retwisting back in Nov 2023 when I was 7 months preggo. Just didn’t have the energy for self reties anymore ! I kept that up till this summer. Decided to interlock so I could enjoy all my water sports and washing my hair quite frequently without damage or snagging or breakage. Since I interlocked in July I decided to interlock again for my 2 year anniversary so I could see if there was any noticeable difference. It takes a few months to see the affects of the different methods on hair. I’ll be doing a pros and cons video soon. In my experience, the retwisted portion does swell more than the interlocked portion on some of my locs. (not all).
also the routine I’m emphasizing is not retwisting vs interlocking. - it’s how you care for your hair in between. Such as washing, stretching, blow drying vs air drying, separating the roots etc. I really appreciate your comment !
@@theminimalistnaturalthis all makes a lot of sense thank you for the reply ! i’m planning to do an install on myself for micro locs so ive been trying to retain all the info i can !
@@theminimalistnatural no it was not it was because my edges were already weak so I made them bigger and I will retie them every month or so to maintain the integrity.

Whew! This !!!! 👏🏾 👏🏾
Me toooo!
I don’t really care about doing my hair by the book anymore
I just do what I want and my hair is thriving!❤❤❤
Same sis same!

oooh interesting ! I’ll have to look into this !
This sounds intriguing as someone who has primary retwisted the last 2 years then interlocked the last few months.
I totally agree with you people just repeat what they have heard when it comes to locs ❤your locs are gorgeous!!!
thank you so much !
Your locs look beautiful. 7 months is a long time.
it is! I prefer not to wait that long
@@theminimalistnatural but you can see the growth when you wait
Love your ❤ hair, locks are still looking healthy after the long stretch between retightening. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! I’m happy with how they turned out too 😊

Also your locks look perfect to me
thank you so much! Not perfect, but just right for me!
So basically, the microlocs won’t loc completely/properly if you just retwist them?
Question does retwisting eventually lock? Is the locking process longer?

@@theminimalistnatural I agree however interlocking is not permanent. I had interlocked hair for a year and combed it out, retaining lots of length
@ Sorry, i didn’t mean they couldn’t be combed out. I meant they don’t wash out like retwist. :)

how many hours did this retie take you?
I didn’t time it. :) I did it over a few weeks.
I went 3 months once and my edges fell out.😂😂 The rest of my hair flourished
not your edges! Was it hormonal?
I had this same issue. I ended up combining my perimeter so I could stretch my reties.
@@theminimalistnatural no it was not it was because my edges were already weak so I made them bigger and I will retie them every month or so to maintain the integrity.
I Love you already ❤❤❤
