It's amazing to hear about other classics. Sorry, but I was tired of watching videos about pride and prejudice, which is a good book, but different classics are welcomed
Jean!! Please keep doing these type of videos, I love hearing you speak about books you love in such a passionate way, I added nearly every single book you mentioned to my tbr! Loved the video ❤
I hadn't heard of a few of these and the ones I had, you definitely sold me. Definitely interested in Sunset Song now--hadn't heard of it and thank you for introducing me to a Scottish classic!
Yesss do your top classica next 😍 My fav modern classics are The bell jar and ariel by sylvia plath Animal farm and 1984 by Orwell And the stranger by Camus
this list is everything. my fav Beauty and the Beast retelling is The Tiger's Bride by Angela Carter. 🐯 i count the hitchhiker's Guide as one of my early introductions to philosophy, lots of those jokes were mind-bending for little me ~
Loved this video; so many books already on my TBR. I have read and adored The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Have you made a top ten list of your fave Beauty and the Beast retellings? I would be so keen to see what makes that list.
I got hooked on EM Delafield’s ‘Diary of a Provincial Lady’ a few years ago. Read the whole series and now listen to it on audible at least once a year! I just love the simple observation style but I’ve not found anyone else who has read it! Published 1930s
Oh I adore Sunset Song (reread it again at end of last year) and Of Mice and Men. They were so amazing. I enjoyed others too, but need to add a few to the wishlist. Lovely video, thank you ❤
Two of my faves would be The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery and In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. The Little Prince such a moving, beautiful story and has a special place in my heart. In Cold Blood couldn't be more different, but it's a captivating read. It's very interesting from a journalistic perspective that also captures incredible storytelling. If you like true crime and thrillers, it's a must read.
Wow, I have read almost all the books on this list - and have to concur with your good taste! The only ones I haven't read are the Alice Walker short stories (though I have read The Color Purple), the Scottish book - those are definitely going on my TR, and... the Italo Calvino fairy tale collection, which has been sitting on my shelf for oh, over 20 years? I consider Italo Calivno one of my favorite authors, and was reading my way through all his books at one point, and so bought that collection (and I also love fairy tales and retellings - Beauty is also one of my all-time favorites!) But I never actually got to it - think I was intimidated by its length. So thanks for the recommendation and reminder - will have to actually get to it now!!
Day of the Triffids is one of my faves too... I think it could be time for a reread actually ❤ I also need to get into some of Wyndham's other books! I also really want to read more Angelou...
A modernist writer from my country (Philippines 🇵🇭) who I think deserves to be known and read more is Nick Joaquín. He wrote stories in the historical fiction and gothic traditions, but also pioneered the magical realism genre. His stories tackle themes of colonialism, religion, and national identity, with florid and masterful prose. Because of this Joaquín's been compared to the likes of Gabriel Garcia Márquez, but I think Joaquín's one of a kind. I recommend his short stories "May Day Eve" and "The Summer Solstice", along with his novel "The Woman Who Had Two Navels". His works were recently published by Penguin Classics in the black spine. Really hope more people get to read him!
Love this selection! Could you do a top 10 scottish books and/or top 10 books that were not (originally) written in english? I would love to hear your thoughts on these categories.
Ooh so I do have a video on that - my top 10 translated books: My Top 10 Favourite Translated Books ua-cam.com/video/ugpVnvFDt1g/v-deo.html I’d probably add in some new ones since I filmed this though so will do an updated version some time this year if that’s of interest.
I really need to reread We Have always lived in the castle. I loved so many of Jackson’s other books but this one didn’t do it for me some years ago, but I really want to give it another chance
A great list, I definitely preferred 'The Haunting of Hill House' over 'We Have Always Lived in the Castle' and I've always wanted to read Steinbeck but have never been sure where to start, so maybe Of Mice and Men! One of my top books has to be To Kill a Mockingbird.
I know 2 of them, have heard about 4 more and will put 8 on my wish list 🤛 Thank you, this video came at the right time. And yes, your top 10 book lists are always welcome, no matter the topic or time period.
What a great video and group of books - none of which (to my very great shame 😅) I've read yet though I've read other books by Alice Walker and I'm sure you'll love The Colour Purple. But I've been meaning to read Shirley Jackson for ages and hope to read Kindred soon. And how exciting to see that the edition of Gibbon's book you link to comes with an intro by Nicola Sturgeon! 📚
Aha I wasn't actually super happy about that - I always vote Labour not SNP 😅. Not an independence fan tbh but still, love the book and that's the most recent edition. On a side note I NEED to read The Colour Purple.
I also adore beauty and the beast retellings and I'm constantly on the hunt for more of them, the most recent one I've read was Bryony and Roses by T. Kingfisher and I loved that one! Maybe you could make a top ten list or just review/tier rank all of the beauty and the beast retellings that you've read so far, I'd so watch that!💕
New to the channel. I’m not a huge fan of fantasy or romance, and this list includes many books I’ve read or want to read. Love a good list! In other words, what I’m trying to say is I love this video 🙂
Here is my list of Top 10 Modern Classics: 1. Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov 2. Story of the Eye by Georges Bataille 3. Nausea by Jean Paul Sartre 4. The Stranger by Albert Camus 5. Ariel by Sylvia Plath 6. The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath 7. Illness as Metaphor and AIDS and Its Metaphors by Susan Sontag 8. Missing Person by Patrick Modiano 9. The Tunnel by Ernesto Sabato 10. A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway
Some of my 20th century favourites are Hermann Hesse: Steppenwolf; John Steinbeck: Travels with Charley; Bertolt Brecht: The Three-Penny Opera; Bernard Shaw: Arms and the Man; TH White: The Sword in the Stone
We Have Always Lived in the Castle is also my favorite Shirley Jackson. I also just think it's very funny. Love Of Mice and Men. Going to buy Day of the Triffids now.
Such a good list! I'm gonna have to add a few of these to my TBR. (Although not gonna lie, I cannot understand the hype around Hitchhiker's Guide; I found it horrendously boring and overdone. But then I think I'm learning I don't like Humor books, even if books that use some humor are good) I would also add Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neal Hurston, The Chosen by Chaim Potok, and Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys as stand out modern classics.
Also I really want to read Their Eyes, I read of Mules and Men by Hurston and thought it was really interesting. Haven't heard of The Chosen before so thanks!
I think people didn’t vote for “classics” because it’s just so… done. We know the classics and we’re bored of them lol. I think if you’re going to do a classics top 10, make it more of an unconventional classics, classics you probably haven’t heard of. ….although perhaps that’s the qualification that makes something a classic? Idk lol
It's amazing to hear about other classics. Sorry, but I was tired of watching videos about pride and prejudice, which is a good book, but different classics are welcomed
Ahaha that's fair, Austen is great but not the only author from pre 1970 aha.
Jean!! Please keep doing these type of videos, I love hearing you speak about books you love in such a passionate way, I added nearly every single book you mentioned to my tbr! Loved the video ❤
I would still really love a video on your favorite classics! Love you and thank you!
Fantastic choices! I’ll definitely be reading for the ones I haven’t read!
I could listen to you talk about books forever and not get bored! Honestly my favourite UA-cam, you deserve way more subscribers

LADY, YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS HAVE BEEN WONDERFUL LATELY ;-; and I love them and I love you
Aaaaaaaaw this means so much!
Ohmigosh, read The Color Purple! I think you’d love it. It’s phenomenal.
Moving it up the TBR pile aha.
So many books I’ve never read but now really want to. It made me so happy to see Hitchhikers guide on your list, definitely a modern classic
I hadn't heard of a few of these and the ones I had, you definitely sold me. Definitely interested in Sunset Song now--hadn't heard of it and thank you for introducing me to a Scottish classic!

LOVE this video post. Interested in purchasing SUNSET SONG, and possibly some of the other titles you talk about.
this list is everything. my fav Beauty and the Beast retelling is The Tiger's Bride by Angela Carter. 🐯 i count the hitchhiker's Guide as one of my early introductions to philosophy, lots of those jokes were mind-bending for little me ~

Have you made a top ten list of your fave Beauty and the Beast retellings? I would be so keen to see what makes that list.
I paused your video to buy and read We have always lived in the castle. Have always meant to read it, so thanks for the nudge.

Of Mice and Men is a fantastic place to start! It was where I did plus it's shorter than some of his other famous ones.

On it's way ;)
Steinbeck overall isn't my favorite, but loved of Mice and Men. I also didn't realize Kindred was published before 1980.
Great video! I love 1984, by George Orwell, it’s a masterpiece.
I really like John Wyndham's style, as well. Although he has never mentioned him, I can't help see a strong likeness in Kazuo Ishiguro's narratives!
