- Anomaly scan is usually carried out when you're between 18 and 21 weeks pregnant, anomaly scan checks the physical development of your baby, although it cannot pick up every condition.
This 20 weeks pregnant ultrasound scan looks in detail at the baby's bones, heart, brain, spinal cord, face, kidneys and abdomen.
It allows the sonographer to look for 11 rare conditions. Anomaly scan only looks for these conditions, and cannot find everything that might be wrong.
Usually, anomaly scan is very accurate but unfortunately, it cannot diagnose 100% of congenital abnormalities. If the anomaly scan is complete, we would expect to pick up at least 95% of cases of spina bifida, 80% of cases of cleft lip or palate, and 60% to 70% of cases of congenital heart disease.
This 20 weeks pregnant ultrasound scan can also identify 50% to 70% of cases of Down syndrome, but only an amniocentesis can give you this information for certain. It is also important to realize that ultrasound scans in pregnancy do not detect problems like cerebral palsy or autism.
