  • We're using a John Deere 9420 4wd tractor to pull a 2100 minimum tillage 7 shank ripper. The subsoiler is running around 16" deep, and we're able to drive around 5 mph. This tool pulls VERY hard. During the video, the ripper hits a large rock that causes the knife to reset.

we run an 8130 and we borrowed a big ox 3 point ripper. We were plowing around 10 inches with it and sometimes it would almost pull our tractor to a stop but we had never plowed the fields that deep so we weren't sure how it would handle. It is quite a load. Its a 11 shank 20" row spacing, no duals on the back for the most part on the tractor.

You hit a rock and trip number 6 shank at 0:58? Looks like a better deal resetting with spring rathar than having to replace a shear bolt.

@DDiesel88: It's hard not to, hitting a big rock like this will nearly throw you into the steering wheel.

Neighbors run a 8400 and 8410 FWD with lots of rubber, one runs a 6 shank, the other runs a 7.....really impressed with the job they do to the soil in Oklahoma Corn ground!

I'm not sure that a 9 shank would work well for you. I'm sure you could pull it, but not at the depth you want in the soils you're describing. These things pull harder than anything I've ever worked with. Our 9420 is probably around 500 hp with the chip in it. Our problem is not enough weight. We don't do any no-till corn. Some guys around here have tried it, but most give it up after a few years. You should ask your question on forums, surely somebody out there has done it. Good luck!

Depends on your soils and location. I'm sure it would pull it, just maybe not 16" deep. In my experience weight is more important. You can always chip it for more power.

Hit a rock @ 0:58. The drivers yanks around like "what the hell?!?!"

@cormus1 best to do it 1 or 2 months before you plow

Good trips on the ripper as I could see the damn rocks working on it. I can see you have the correct tire pressure on that 9420 as it looked like it was working hard.

@2fast65 ya it's not meant to move much top soil,,,helps in eliminating erosion that way. There is a few farmers these days looking back at ripping a field once every 4-5 yrs

Ok but what if we don't plow,,,,,as in we don't plow at all,,direct seed is the way we do it around here. Just wondering is all.

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking to go 14-18" in mostly clay soils, 1.8-2.5 organic matter, mostly pretty tough ground. Mid-Michigan.
The 9530 is 475hp but the Nebraska test was in the upper 490's on drawbar pull. If it could run 5mph I'd be happy. What's your 9420, like 425hp?
Also, do you no-till corn into the ripped soy ground at all?
    Nice equipment btw.

@sixstringfretter 16" as I recall, and it was a huge load. Hitting a hard spot would nearly throw you into the steering wheel.

    I run a 9530 Deere with weights, think I could handle a 9 shank?

How did you get the caddy or the ripper so its not a 3 point?

I do have one question that I can't seem to get an answer for, can you or is it advisable to subsoil in the spring if you still have compaction?

    • @robertpayne2717
      @robertpayne2717 4 роки тому

SUBSOIL IN SUMMER OR FALL DRIEST TIME OF YEAR OTHERWISE YOU RUN THE RISK OF SMEARING AND COMPACTING MORE OF THE SOIL!!

We pull a 3 shank subsoiler 2 feet deep with 50 hp 2wd... The difference is that ours is 3pt, so the weight of the lifted ground pushes on the rear wheels, which gives much better traction. If we let it lean too heavily on the rollers instead of the tractor 3pt, (for grassland subsoiling) the tractor spins out.

Drop the tires pressure and ad weight

How deep? Looks like maybe 14-16 inches? It appears to pull very nicely.
