The film Mr. Takahata mentions at 08:16 is "le roi et l'oiseau" and its earlier version "la bergère et le ramonneur", usually translated "the king and mockingbird" in English. It is a marvel of animation, in which the robot design famously inspired Miyazaki for Laputa.

The animation style choices Takahata made for "The tale of Princess Kaguya" were not only inspiring in their clear representation of movie animation as art, but were a perfect selection for the story. Also the way the style becomes modified in some scenes for the same reason shows an artist's intent.
Isao Takahata was a master at his art and we are poorer because of his passing.

I think more I know about him now that he is one of the most prominent artists who touch and move people's heart for real wholeheartedly and poignantly in more modest human touch. I respect him greatly.

Great interview of an animation legend. I saw Kaguya at a press screening (as a re-watch) and I think the film is absolutely brilliant. It is sad to think the company behind it is considering closing down and is struggling financially. Kaguya is one of the best Ghibli films hands down.

Wow, I'm mighty impressed you guys were able to get an interview with this notoriously camera shy director!

R.I.P . One of the giants in animation. The industry, the art form, wouldn't be the same without his contribution. Thank you Takahata-san for your work. They will be cherished for generations to come. Arigato Gozaimasu.

I can't believe he did "Only Yesterday" also. That was beautiful. And thanks to him and Hayao Miyazaki, they are still the best!!

Great man! Fantastic artist! I think he was always a little bit in Miyazakis shadow, Miyazaki being the one who created all the Ghibli icons, but I think in some ways Takahata was almost a little bit more daring in his work. I love them both, Miyazaki-san and Takahata-san they`re like Ying and Yang of Studio Ghibli.

Actually, Miyazaki Hayao always wanted to be like Takahata. He was his master.

Mr. Takahata was a senior artist in the anime field & Mr. Miyazaki came in as a junior & learned from Mr. T as they worked together. But later on, they become partners & then strong rivals in the industry. In one interview Mr. M expressed that at work he carried both frustration & unshakable trust toward Mr. H & this feeling was more intense than towards his own wife(lol). (I think I heard in teary Mr. M's obituary that heir history goes about 54yrs.)

Wow, this was a get. And thanks for keeping this interview uninterrupted, as you do for all your videos. I think you get a good sense of the person Takahata is just from the way he answers these questions.

And I believe Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki together, they are really great anime artists. And are really reliable too.

I consider the hardships of the interpreter.
