The budget cap is great. Mercedes did a bad job designing their car and shouldn't be forgiven just because they have money. In the Mercedes domination 2014-2016, Ferrari were spending crazy money and it didn't help them in those seasons so the budget cap isn't the problem. We just need to give them time, these regulations will be more effective the longer they stay stable. It's changing the regulations again that will make the Redbull car even stronger..
Driving Sweets. Back in the day when seatbelt enforcement was just becoming a thing my grandparents were stopped in a queue as the police were doing spot checks. My granddad was eating a liquorice sherbert dip and simultaneously trying to put his seatbelt on. As he twisted around the sherbert went everywhere and he was covered in it. The policeman was in hysterics and told him to just go.
I have a similar feeling about Piastri like I did with Vandoorne. Vandoorne was really quick in the junior racing series, and then he got handed one of the worst McLarens ever, and was left out on his own by the team next to one of the best drivers in history, then exiled to Formula E. Right now, Piastri is in a ghastly McLaren next to a faster teammate and will probably be left out to dry. It's very concerning for his future through no fault of his own.
For an F1 season where one team is completely dominant, it was the most exciting it could possibly have been. Ignore the two cars that disappeared off in front and it was an incredible race.
Hi chaps, I’m a graphic design student here in Bath, for our final task of the year, I was asked to research and to discover a culture to study. As I am and absolute petrol-nut of course I chose to do mine on Car Culture. I have a good idea of what it means to me but I would love to get your opinions on it: 1. how and who got you into cars 2. what does car culture mean to you love the pod, thanks very much, Dom
What sort of person looks forward to listening on Sunday mornings (which is when I get through the podcast each week, before, after and occasionally just a little bit during church) to five middle-aged men go on about travel sweets for many minutes at a time? Me sort of person it turns out. Harris says “m’learned colleagues” as a joke but in fact that’s exactly what they are: learned in petrol-head topics, learned in language and raconteurage, and learned in being real men, full human beings open to all sorts of experience and emotion. For this Yank, it’s like flying from today’s America to Ireland from the east coast: a quick easy trip to a place inhabited by sane adults.
Same results each race. i like to see the teams driving these cars. Red Bull - driving a Rimac Nevera, Ferrari - LaFerrari, Aston Martin - Valkyrie, Mercedes - AMG G-Wagon, Mclaren - 12C, Alfa Romeo - Mito, Alpine - 5GT Turbo Raider, Williams - Clio Williams 2, Alpha Tauri - Alfasud, Hass - GMC Hummer.
I used to sell SD1's in my first Motor Industry guise. I drove them a lot and loved them dearly, but they were shit to be honest. The Police liked them to drive, but they were even worse than the Triumph 2.5 pi's they replaced (another 70's iconic Police car, along with the 60's Wolseley 6/110's). The car that the Police seem to remain most fond of (along with the Senator) is the T5 850 Volvo, which covered huge mileages. Glad to see the backing for the Cult's 'She sells Sanctuary'! I recommended that in episode 5. Fantastic episode again...I look forward to this every Friday.
Chris you have to remember that when Piastri signed for McClaren he didn't have a seat at Alpine, they'd organised a 2 year drive for him at Williams so you can't blame him
Another thoroughly entertaining episode. Always enjoy the variety of topics, the honest discussions and the broad knowledge of the eclectic team. The F1 discussion confirmed my suspicion this season will be a Red Bull walkover, sadly, lets hope the midfield puts on an entertaining show... The section on travel sweets was enlightening as someone who lives in Asia we just don’t see the Haribo selection available in Europe. Was really surprised no one mentioned Simpkins tinned travel sweets. For me as a child travelling in the 60’s in the back of my Dads Morris 1100 traveller (a design ahead of its time?) I always looked forward to reaching into the tin to select a sugar dusted fruit sweet.
Regarding the F1 conversation, Red Bull have the season stitched up (I'd rather they hadn't) Ferrari will struggle for second, Aston Martin seem to have came from nowhere, whether they keep pace all season I don't know but it would be good to see, Mercedes are still slow and Mclaren who? Red Bull will take first and second in the drivers championship. It may be another dull season on the front row. Alonso fighting the Ferraris will be the interesting battle.
Two years ago a BMW X5 police car stopped outside my house and a policeman knocked on my door. When I opened the door, he politely introduced himself, saying he was from the Armed Response Unit. He stressed there was no issue what-so-ever and that he simply wanted to look at and ask about my Volvo V60 Polestar (parked outside), as he said the UK police loved their fast Volvos! True story - I still have the CCTV footage 😊
7:25 Piastri's "decision" that you guys keep referring to was not between an Alpine seat and a McLaren seat - when he made the call it was between "Maybe we'll put you in Williams for a couple years then recall you to Alpine, but there's no contract for that yet" and the McLaren seat. The Alpine seat was never contractually offered to Piastri until well after the McLaren deal was done. DeVries got shafted by not getting a stop so he was on old tires, and let's not forget Yuki is not a bad driver at all - certainly a more proven talent than Latifi whose the only other teammate reference we've had for Nyck. The AT looks a bit of a dog this year so I'm not really sure how much more we could expect from him with how the strategy played out.
Great podcast as always, part of my Friday morning schedule now! On the subject of F1 I think you're spot on with the race last weekend in that it's Max's championship again. I've been an F1 fan since 2005 when I was 5 and Alonso has been my favourite driver ever since, so last weekend's race was brilliant for me, but if it wasn't for Fernando being back where he belongs I would have thought it was another dreary race with so little action at the front of the field it's embarrassing. This leads me to my question: do any of you watch IndyCar? I started watching IndyCar properly in 2017 and I was just mad that I hadn't started sooner, because it's without a doubt more exciting and enjoyable than F1 in every possible way. The IndyCar season kicked off last weekend also and I was on the edge of my seat the whole race, it was absolutely brilliant. More action in one race than there will be in this whole F1 season honestly, which is usually the case. I'd love to hear your views on this and if any of you watch it I'd love to hear some conversation on it. I think any motorsport fan should be watching it because you'll thank yourself and wonder how you've been missing it!! Cheers.
I'm thinking; Collecting Cars Presents: Off The Limiter (assuming that phrasing is available) Collecting Addicts is equally cool though. Either way, another epic episode Sirs 🎩

F1 - Really pleased for Alonso and would like to see him back on top and perhaps even another World Championship to his resume. 🏆 Police Cars - I'm a kid of the 80's, so for me the coolest Police cars were seeing Volvo T5's and the occasional Subaru Impreza Turbo from around my regions in the 90's. In the early 90's the Senator 3.0. 24v and Granada Scorpio's were popular on the motorways! Then in the 2000's and more recently seeing the Skoda Octavia vRS and BMW 330d and 530d's were pretty cool.🚔 Travel Sweets - Lemon Sherbets, a proper classic. And then those boiled sweets in a metal tin my Dad used to keep in the glove box. £350k 2 car garage - A 992 GTS for everyday and road trips and a 992 GT3 specifically for track days!
In about 1969, at 2 a.m. I was driving my 1293 cc Downton Cooper S, near Royal Holloway College on the A30, and obeying the speed limit. I was pulled over by a Police Panda Austin 1300, blue light rotating away on the roof. We were pointing up a fairly steep hill. (This is quite important). As a completely sober 19 year old, I was given full roadside interrogation. Is this your car, have you been drinking, driving licence. Tyre check, the lot. I noticed whilst this prolonged interview was taking place, that the blue light was slowing down and eventually came to a standstill. I was given permission to leave the “scene”, as I did I realised the Panda headlights had gone out. Panda pointing uphill with a completely flat battery.
A new name for the show? Encapsulating the whole thing. “Five effing Addicts” works. I don’t think you can better Collecting Addicts. I’ve told everyone to search on that. You have already established the “brand”. It’s bl**dy good. I’m sure Ed would want to keep Collecting in the title. Please keep going guys. Don’t invite Flintoff BTW. (Used to live him on a cricket field) Don’t invite Paddy. (Love him on a stage).
8:55 Michael and Ross. The 2014 was developed by them, then the 2022 was developed by Lewis. Nuff said. (see also McLaren) (by developed obviously I don't mean design, I mean the finer details)
A great episode gents. Haribo fangs and sour sparks all over the place here in Riyadh (and Switzerland where I was previously). Best munched whilst listening to ZZTop. Saudis have a sweet tooth… Liked the police car bit, I remember police protection units having unmarked Jetta VR6’s back in the day (boot good for weapon boxes). Best Jam Sandwich’s - the Droop Snoot RS2000, P6, Mk2 Jag and the SD1 #childhoodmemories Two car garage: Racing car - An Aston db5 lightweight race prepped; road car - A 1987 V8 Vantage (keep it in the family).
Police car. Apart from the Rover SD1 "jam sandwich", there were big black things used by the Met (and others) in the '60s, blue light in the grille, bells - Wolseley 16-something?
Adrian from the time period when the cars had low ground effects. So why would the FIA choose that era of cars to bring into 2000’s? The last ground effect cars go back as far as 1978…..45yrs ago! What direction is F1 heading in?
I studied in Holland back in the 90s and I was in accommodation very close to the High speed police force head quarters in a place called Driebergen, where the Dutch traffic police used Porsche 911 Targas.. What a site it was to see them on the motorway.. No point trying to get away from them! The reason they opted for Targas was so they could gesture more easily to lorry drivers.. Dream job!! Brilliant podcast!!
Yeah everyone has FORGOTTEN Merc had allmost 1 full second over grid some yrs. Red bull few tenths ahead at 3.6mile track? Means at austria etc itll be .4 sec 1st to last. Wait till Saudi ull see its MUCH closer than when merc dominated
Whilst us Brits have sampled haribos, barley sugars, fox's glacier mints, we thoroughly recommend 'Kopiko'. A dark sweet made from real coffee - rather than the usual chemical concoction - all the way from Thailand. These have kept us focussed on long drives for many years and are now available in the UK from large oriental supermarkets.
It’s ironic that you should mention an Alfa. I live in the US and attend the vintage races each summer. The ONLY pic I saved from 2022 was an Alfa cresting the hill at the Mid Ohio race course.
Active road policing is 100% best way. A cop car or a few sitting pulling over speeders and ppl driving crazy. Interstate yeah we can all speed some and be.ok. but if ur in town on a city street? No stop flying 15mph over ppl. In usa speed caneras do not really exist. Red light ones barely do. So yeah ppl also can get a lisence WAYYY to easy
Great episode but got to disagree with the cost cap opinion. I think it is needed to give lower teams a fighting chance. Of course you blokes would love to see Merc spending unlimited budget, only for Lewis to win #8 (funny if he moves). In the vain, I guess you cannot complain about a Redbull dominance when Merc did it for 8 years. F1 domination has its peaks and troughs, it is just up to the other teams to do better.
Cannot understand why Neil thinks Hamilton is the best of all time. Nobodies team mate would beat Max or Schuy. Hamilton has been beaten by teammates numerous times and why is mercedes not competitive , simple others have caught up to that engine. When it was released , Mercedes said it would win 3 championships, they didn't realise it would be 8 !
Once again very entertaining episode. Thank you! I think I might have a winner for both categories; travel sweets and mints. How can I send you a sample?
24v Senator was the one I remember. i got pulled over once by an Officer in an Omega, they had just started to replace the Senator, when i asked him what he thought of it he replied, " i wouldn't pay you in washers for it " i worked for a Vauxhall dealer at the time and the early Omegas were horrendous
Neil:"If it is not British, I am with Ferrari" With respect and a bit of joke: F1 is a British sport 😂 most of the team are located in UK, so Ferrari should be your last option hahaha
Wait till people finish there story before getting your oar in Chris , as it just comes across as a babble and we miss the timing of the other person’s whole point. Thanks
As an Alonso fan, it'll be exciting to see how the rest of the season play's out. I don't realistically think the Aston will be able to get multiple wins this season, but they will be the team to watch over the course of the year. As for Mercedes/Hamilton not being competitive....I hold the view that its almost similar to what was happening in the NBA between 2015-2019 where the Golden State Warriors were almost a write in to win the Championship year in, year out. Mercedes not running away with everything makes the sport a little more interesting and while Red Bull had dominated the championship last year I don't think they will see the same amount of dominance that we saw over the last eight year with Mercedes with the introduction of the cost -cap, Red Bull's cost cap penalties being applied this year and the new technical regulations.
A title fight would be nice to see. The problem I see with Red Bull is Adrian Newey. In his spare time he designed a "sucker car" that used very similar style venturi tunnels, and the aston Valhalla and Varkyrie use very similar ground effect venturi tunnels. It looks to me that Red Bull have already done their homework on the new aerodynamics and everyone else will take a while to catch up. I don't think funding caps will stop the Red Bull dominance. Im not a Red Bull fan either, I'd like to see a title fight.
@@JamesCairney Full respect to Adrian and his team, they had the regulations down to pat and the fruits of their labour is really on display so far. While I am of the view that we won't have a close title fight this year,I have the suspicion we might see some interesting results near the latter half of the year from either the Ferrari or Aston.
You can’t but help think there is a conspiracy red bull Still have not won the world championship without controversy. The penalties that they were given already show that they were penalties at all. So if I was Mercedes I would spend as much money as they can get it right and then get the slap on the wrist later.
Seems if your ahead it's not that hard to deal with a wind tunnel reduction penalty. Maybe something that actually affects a team should be restricted.
Brilliant as ever. You're brilliant but Manish life episodes are just... Wow! Travel sweets, first choice is popcorn and afterwards only jellies will do it. However, snacks like salty pistachios or Penn State sour cream & chive pretzels... slurp!
Another amazing episode gang! Best thing on UA-cam right now! Sorry Chris, but Babylon spec Senators never wore early Xenons - this was domain of Omega 3.0 V6 24valvers
@ChrisHarris...the coroner stated it was crankshaft bearing failure that ultimately caused the catastrophic engine failure and subsequent oil dump and engine fire therefore loss of control at over 100mph. Whether bearing starvation was caused by an overheating turbo carbonising oil and clogging oil ways I don't know but apparently from 2014 to 2017, five to seven crankshaft bearing failures had occurred in each month in UK police vehicles.
Mr Harris, see when you say, RB can just go away and design next year's car, I wonder if you were saying this when we had all those years of mercedes dominating F1, there was nothing more boring than that... unfortunately the fans favourite has stuffed up for another year, deal with it 🤦🤦🤦🤣🤣
When I was living in Belgium, (I’m English) I organised a golfing Roadtrip to Kent. I gave a lift to a good friend who originated from Texas. When we arrived at Eurotunnel to his glee he found a liquorice selection, a kilo box. We waited to get on the train, travelled across and found our hotel in Kent, by which time he had consumed the entire box, didn’t offer me a single piece. He made my day when he announced his delight at finding liquorice at Eurotunnel and said, “I haven’t had it in years, I used to be addicted to it.” OMG.
5 older dudes with passion talking about a subject they adore. Honest, refreshing, and lots of fun.
The budget cap is great. Mercedes did a bad job designing their car and shouldn't be forgiven just because they have money.
In the Mercedes domination 2014-2016, Ferrari were spending crazy money and it didn't help them in those seasons so the budget cap isn't the problem.

Loved monkeys story about the drunk passenger I have my hunch it's Goodwin 😂
Please don’t ever stop these podcasts.
The gift that just keeps giving , This is just fantastic guys. The story Manish told about the Lotus was just brilliant 👏👏👏👏👏
Driving Sweets. Back in the day when seatbelt enforcement was just becoming a thing my grandparents were stopped in a queue as the police were doing spot checks. Collecting Addicts is perfect. Describes the hosts and probably the audience who collect here for a weekly dose of car talk.
First police car I think of is the Volvo 850 T5 estate.

In the vain, I guess you cannot complain about a Redbull dominance when Merc did it for 8 years. F1 domination has its peaks and troughs, it is just up to the other teams to do better.
Wonderful conversations and deep knowledge ... something learned on every watch.
Chris, "the drift" Harris is all for ACTIVE road policing... Holier than thou?
At the time, my father had an Opel Senator 3.0E and an Opel Omega (Carlton) 24v manual. It was a good duo.
The only real difference between Merc dominance of the past years and Red Bull now is; Toto is only unlikable, while Christian is a complete dbag.
Neil:"If it is not British, I am with Ferrari"
With respect and a bit of joke: F1 is a British sport 😂 most of the team are located in UK, so Ferrari should be your last option hahaha
Chris and crew, wouldn't "fuel" by Metallica be especially appropriate for your Spotify list?
I wonder if any of the 5 hosts have not played Autobahn Kraftwerk while driving through Germany?
The "jam sandwich" support photo! Brilliant! Laughing and applauding that.
2 cars that price? I duno i mean i got an st185 maybe a mk4 supra. That leaves like few 100gs
The rover 800 for me is the ultimate traffic police car. Hated seeing one of them behind you 🚨🙄😁
Great podcast as always!
29:00 Is that a Falklands War reference? Good one. :D
All the police stories were briliant.
T series not k series…..anyway, how about Collecting Yarns 😃
Oooh that E Type! Weekend car would be manual F430.
Ha! I’m sat in my office in the background of that Cali-T photo!
Wait till people finish there story before getting your oar in Chris , as it just comes across as a babble and we miss the timing of the other person’s whole point. Thanks
My favorite Haribo is the sugar free one. Really helps in long journeys.
Hilarious how many followers @Mintsincars now has post this episode!
These conversations are pure gold. So damn relatable. Being from the USA and doing a lot of euro travel I have to say the orange tik tac one hits home
Rover Tomcat Turbo didn't have a K Series Turbo engine but a T Series.
This is the SD1 organ transplant video ua-cam.com/video/ZnW-sTwxeUM/v-deo.html
you can leave those photographs a bit longer. ive been looking at your heads for 8 hours now. a couple of cars to look at would be nice.
@@parthlad it would be good to see Aston keep their pace all season
Collecting Addicts is by far the best motoring podcast
Are you talking about your matchbox collections?
Manish aside the rest seem to have Van Gough's ear for music .
The one he cut off?
@@drewwrobel564 Indeed !
Make one episode about motorcycles and riding ❤❤
Love you are adding in photos of the cars now. Still needs to be a bit louder. But love it!
You can’t but help think there is a conspiracy red bull Still have not won the world championship without controversy.
The penalties that they were given already show that they were penalties at all. So if I was Mercedes I would spend as much money as they can get it right and then get the slap on the wrist later.
For sure, and maybe build a road car that uses all the formula 1 diffuser tech so who cares if you get less wind tunnel time.
You could just listen to then just chat all day.
Podcast name: Carlecting Addicts
I have a set of those Ciccio boots! They are great boots :)
The two teams that did well, were the same two teams fined for overspending. Maybe it pays to cheat i F1
Seems if your ahead it's not that hard to deal with a wind tunnel reduction penalty. Maybe something that actually affects a team should be restricted.
For me:
1) Gelscoe Motorsport GT40, pre65 appendix k car (Peter Knight or Steve warrior 289 V8) *£325k*
2) Jaguar F type V6s convertible *£25k*
Brilliant as ever. You're brilliant but Manish life episodes are just... Wow!
Travel sweets, first choice is popcorn and afterwards only jellies will do it. However, snacks like salty pistachios or Penn State sour cream & chive pretzels... slurp!
Popcorn can be very messy
@@edwardlovett9288 Indeed, but salt n sweet is a cracking driving snack. Pair it with coffee and you can drive for days :D
Another amazing episode gang! Best thing on UA-cam right now! Sorry Chris, but Babylon spec Senators never wore early Xenons - this was domain of Omega 3.0 V6 24valvers
the name is perfect, no need to change it
@ChrisHarris...the coroner stated it was crankshaft bearing failure that ultimately caused the catastrophic engine failure and subsequent oil dump and engine fire therefore loss of control at over 100mph. Whether bearing starvation was caused by an overheating turbo carbonising oil and clogging oil ways I don't know but apparently from 2014 to 2017, five to seven crankshaft bearing failures had occurred in each month in UK police vehicles.
Love this, it's like having a conversation with the boys, similar jokes "Mike Crack" to what we'd say. Brilliant. Keep it up!
Simpkins mixed fruit drops....
Wurthers original Butterscotch
Mr Harris, see when you say, RB can just go away and design next year's car, I wonder if you were saying this when we had all those years of mercedes dominating F1, there was nothing more boring than that... unfortunately the fans favourite has stuffed up for another year, deal with it 🤦🤦🤦🤣🤣
Showing my age here chaps but for me the most exciting police car has to be the Daimler SP250 (Dart) in black livery !
Chris… you can buy fangs in Sweden too. We have sweet shops (pick n mix) with over 1000 varieties!!! Perfect for any journey
Please don’t ever stop doing this series
When I was living in Belgium, (I’m English) I organised a golfing Roadtrip to Kent. I gave a lift to a good friend who originated from Texas. When we arrived at Eurotunnel to his glee he found a liquorice selection, a kilo box. We waited to get on the train, travelled across and found our hotel in Kent, by which time he had consumed the entire box, didn’t offer me a single piece. He made my day when he announced his delight at finding liquorice at Eurotunnel and said, “I haven’t had it in years, I used to be addicted to it.” OMG.
For sweets get yourself to a booker or Makro store
