Richard Attenborough and Arnold Schulman completely misinterpret the significance of this song for the movie adaptation. It goes from an anthem about sacrifice for one's art, sung by the whole company, to a solo about a dancer's affair with the director.
Absolutely true! Actually, there were quite a few decent performances in the movie. But the mis-interpretation of this key song and the general overplay of the romance ruined the movie.
Laura,,, wow!, your entire life ?!! This song is special to me also.. it was the first time I was in my first year of college show choir and also we went to see A chorus line in New York with my high school band tour, at the end of My senior year of high school.
@@mias1385 “What I Did For Love” was originally sung by the character Diana, not Cassie. They changed the context from a love song about the art of dance, to a love song about Zach. Cassie originally had a much better solo called “The Music and the Mirror”.
What I find offensive is how this heart-rending song is performed in either sotto voce or belting. No sense whatsoever of bittersweet, only bitter & sugary bleccchhh.
Awful. Just terrible. What the hell were they thinking when they gave this song to Cassie??? Obviously, they weren't. The entire movie sucks. Nothing at all like the B'way show. What a shame. They should have just had the original B'way cast do the movie, like they were all promised!!! FAIL.
Yeah they could've at least cast someone who can dance. At least a LITTLE bit. But it's Hollywood and felt the movie needed star power. Michael Douglas was very popular at this time.
One of tbe worst renditions,, and most pointedly wrong interpretations of this song possible. Priscilla Lopez must shudder every time someone plays this demolition of her song.
@@NYKID10014 I hope you’re joking because that is not even close to true. It’s fine to dislike this version of the song, but the woman won a Tony for heaven’s sake.
Such a beautiful song, sung here so lovelessly and with no voice.

Totally agree....
LITERALLY this movie is such a miss
Exactly!
wow - how 'the red shoes'....actually I think the actress who played Cassie misinterpreted it. Attenborough got it.
Chorus LIne was my inspiration to come to NYC, long long ago 🌟🌟🌟🌟
was it worth it?

Me and my classmates in graduation from 8th grade to high school sang this song
so good 🔥💥🌋💗❤💋💛
They gave this song to Cassie and cut the music and the mirror... OMG, what were they thinking?

@@mias1385 DIANA MORALES sings it in the play. Also, she BELTS it out - it's supposed to be a showstopper. This is stupid AF.
@@mollylea2643 Absolutely
Not as impactful as the stage version, and I'm not talking about her voice.
They made it a song about her and Zach as opposed to a song about the cast passion for dancing.
And Diana sings it.
ほんと大好き
Peter Griffin plays this song with his fingers on water-filled glasses in the Family Guy episode: One If By Clam, Two If By Sea.
Loved that scene
That's why I'm here

This cannot compare in any way, shape, or form to the original Broadway show. Should have NEVER been made into a film. :(
It’s just piss poor direction
If they didn't miss the point of the play it would be fine. I mainly watch clips for the dancing segments... that's it
@@MxyzptlksacExactly. This song was completely misinterpreted.
@@MxyzptlksacI love I Can Do That!!
Never seen this on stage so the film is all I have and I loved it.
MS DARBUS
This character was not supposed to sign this song and not in the context shown in the movie. Those kinds of changes bug me

my head was spinning from the amount of tempo changes and flat notes in this version... yikes
Why is it just Cassie singing
The context of this song is all wrong. What a horrible film of a great broadway show. No wonder it only got 48% on rottentomatoes.
Yeah the film is whack in comparison to the show, but she did the best she could :)

This film needs to be remade with the focus on DANCERS.A dancer should direct it...are you listening RIta Moreno?
fake edition!
the creator of this song melody not yet can singing this kind of melody at that year!!

“ the number one cause for injury during a hurricane would be glass.”
girl what is this...
This song was written for Diana in original Broadway play...not Cassie. Whole movie was a disgrace, simply awful.
This was so bad…
Michael Douglas was totally mid-cast and had no place in this movie!
