Question, I’m getting ready to do my first DIY pour for a Swim Spa. 10’ x 16’ x 6”. I plan to do it in three sections. Harbor Freight mixer. 1/2” rebar 2 1/2” off the bottom. I will notch my divider for the rebar. Will the two cold joints suffice for relief cuts, or should I cut them in after it cures?
DIY BEWARE: 1) Spa/Jacuzzi/Hot tub slabs need to be grounded and bonded. Of course, the unit itself will be wired with ground, but the unit should be bonded with the metal (rebar/6x6x10mesh) in the slab. Check with your building dept. before pouring your pad. Save yourself from a potential nightmare. Research Equal Potential Grounding. 2) Don't pour directly on the dirt. Get a few inches of gravel in there and compact it so your slab is structural. Also, consider doing 6" turndowns around the perimeter. Your slab should be a finished 4".
My concrete slab is 12 years old and sitting on a dirt foundation. As long as you flatten the area and tamp it, it'll be fine. You are correct with regards to grounding. I'm getting ready to lay another 12x12x4 down and I'm doing mad research on leveling and internal structuring for my new tub. I like the idea of the bonding. I'm going to have to work that somehow.
Noticed in a lot of vids, no use of rca. I was planning on doing a project like this. Do I not need it? As long as the dirt is compacted? Also, if the ground is flat but maybe slopes a little, is that ok so long as the form is level? Would just be deeper in spots?
Love your videos. I have a question about pouring over existing slab. Pouring over existing patio probably close to 30 years old. No rebar in that slab but they did use fiber. Pouring 4” stamped over top with rebar and mesh. Any tips? Should I worry about anchoring both slab together with a horseshoe type piece of rebar? Thanks.
Great video thank you. Any advice for pouring over an existing slab. I have a 10x12 shed slab at the side of my house that we pour about 4inches lower than the walkway. Now I want to raise it to be level with the rest of the walkway. Any advice?
How come you poured directly onto soil ? I've added a base of 3/4 clear limestone as my base between my soil. Plus mesh. Am I over engineering. I don't want this settling with my hot tub on top. Any advice is appreciate. Thank you
What slump do you normally pour on? I’ve been doing a 6 or 7 but would less be better? Would it cure faster and get away from me or does the chemical reaction do it’s thing no matter the slump?
Could a concrete slab support the weight of an above ground pool? If so does the ground below the slab have to be leveled 1st or can the slab be poured to make level?
Hi there! Great video. Noticed you said that the slab was ready for the Jacuzzi already. Do you usually have jacuzzi's placed 24 hours after pour? Trying to figure this out. Appreciate the response!
Just had a slab done for my jacuzzi and am happy with the work, but noticed it has a couple of small dips, around 1/8" over 4 feet. Nothing to worry about I assume, but what flatness is reasonable for a project like this? The only reason I noticed is that one spot dried out slower than the rest after hosing it down.
Dave do you have any video's or suggestions on a form 6" high that has to sit on a existing slab, like a raised sidewalk that has to be poured next to a existing driveway. How would you "Mount" to form in place? Thank You Your efforts are greatly appreciated!!
Or you can drive stakes a few inches past each end of where the new slab will be, and a few inches off the existing slab. Then run two foot 2 by 4s back on to the existing slab, secured to the stakes. Then run a 2by all the way from stake to stake on top of the 2 by 4s and secure. Then this long 2 by will be running parallel to your new from and can be used to fasten kicker braces as needed. No drilling into existing slab required.

Nothing to worry about I assume, but what flatness is reasonable for a project like this? The only reason I noticed is that one spot dried out slower than the rest after hosing it down.
Once the jacuzzi is over it no worries
it is better to give the work floor plastic before casting, so that the cement water does not fall and does not shrink quickly for the concrete.

Do you ever need to bond an electrical wire to the rebar to then bond it to the hot tub frame? If so, how would you make that connection to the rebar?
For house foundations I have.
