We’re FlatlandKC.org, KCPT’s digital magazine, a destination for local and regional storytelling in and around Kansas City.
I work for cfm Distributors, an HVAC distribution company, in the west bottoms, right off of Union Ave. We take great pride in not only our historic building - as we’ve restored the brick work while keeping the flood lines as a reminder of just how high the water has risen, which you can see on our corner pillars - but also in the district as a whole. We have representatives for the district, and are working to help restore the region to a promising area again. It has been years in the workings, but I cannot wait to see some of these residential lofts that have been planned for the area finally be implemented to the district.

Thank you for that video. It would be interesting to do a feature film length video which would take you you through the history of the west bottoms from the days of its beginnings through the Prendergast Era, the 1951 Flood, all the meat packing plants of the early 1900’s, the old Union Depot and the rough neighborhood that greeted passengers before Union Station, and so on. It’s amazing how much history there is in one small section of the city. It’s where the American Royal got its start, and where more than two million head of cattle flowed through annually at the livestock exchange. What a place it must have been in the early 20th century.
I can remember as a kid looking South from the intercity viaduct and seeing stock yards for as far as I could see , and the smoke stacks at the swift meat packing plant.
In the 1950’s, when the wind was right, the horrible smell from the stockyards frequently reached our home near the Wyandotte-Johnson county line, at least 5 miles away. My grade school class were treated to a tour of one of the slaughter houses and the girls luckily still wore head scarves; I can remember wadding mine up and holding it to my mouth in order to breathe without vomiting. That’s what the West Bottoms means to me. But it would be fascinating to see more photos of the times when those stately buildings were built-and before the horrible stockyards invaded. Was there such a time?

Enjoyed the video, I think the West Bottoms is a very unique place, and with the Turkey Creek finally tamed the flooding there has pretty much ended. Would be nice to see what is left of the old buildings repurposed into more offices, apartments, art studios and galleries.
Nooooooo........ NO APARTMENTS! Those idiots did that in Des Moines Iowa and they ruined downtown.
About the 2 minute mark I believe was shot on the second floor of the Central Bag Company building. I spent many Sat mornings running across the bales of raw burlap awaiting the cutting and sewing machines to produce 100lb potato sacks. Later in my 20's I worked there for my dad. He owned the trucks and trailers that delivered their products. I can still smell the musty odor of the burlap.
Just moved to KC a few months back and recently stumbled across the west bottoms. What an interesting place it is. You did an incredible job giving the rundown. You are truly talented.

I had a studio there from 1993-95 Great building.
Tried watching this video on my TV and I had to restart everything. Weird. Anyone they should let people live at the livestock.

West Bottoms has epic floods. That's is why nobody is down there. (1903, 1908, 1951, 1993... It floods down there).
It's also in proximity to the poo factory. (Water sanitation station, where all of KCMO's sewage goes).
Flood & poo is a bad combo.
