@@ellynmacgregor8210 That's one story. The other is that it was actually producer Mervyn LeRoy who didn't want his vision despoiled any further. He'd grudgingly agreed to the removal of the Jitterbug sequence, the Triumphal Return sequence, and even a reprise of "Over the Rainbow," but he had fought like mad to get Judy the starring role, and he would be damned if her signature tune was not in the finished product.

The story I've read the most times is that the reason this scene nearly made the cutting-room floor is that someone at MGM (I forget who) felt a song like this (a ballad) slowed down the pace of the film too much and too early. Amazing how some people can't identify pure genius the moment they see it or hear it. It's one of the most beautiful and iconic two-and-a-half minutes in movie history (to think Judy was only 16 when she starred in this film yet sings this wistful song with such maturity!) and the only thing that was slowed down -- perhaps forever -- is our hearts. Magic like this almost can't be explained. You can break it into all its components and put them all back together again and the end result is still a thing of wonder. Thank you Judy Garland, Harold Arlen, E. 'Yip' Harburg, King Vidor (who directed this scene), and Arthur Freed, uncredited producer of the film, who fought Judy's corner so she could play Dorothy. Oh, and Toto, too! We'll all be long dead and people will still be watching this small miracle and ponder how it was made when talking films had only existed for barely a decade...

I don’t know why this song always made me kinda sad in a movie that’s otherwise supposed to be more casual. Maybe because Garland was always treated like shit at a young age and her life was always plagued by issues :( But at the same time perhaps this song was purposely meant to feel like Dorothy felt upset and that it successfully works
My would watch every year with me. In the 1970 s that's all we had was a television that would get off the couch! Sofa And manually changing the channel
I answered a question asked by a DJ. He asked what was Frances Gumm's stage name. I called in and said, "Judy Garland!" He asked me if I can impersonate her. I started to sing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." He put me on hold and then had me sing it on the air-live!
JUDY GARLAND: GREATEST ENTERTAINER OF ALL TIME. Short-sided studio executives wanted to cut this song because they felt it "slowed the picture down" and they couldn't have a "fat girl singing in a barnyard." MGM did irreparable damage to Garland's self-image and self-esteem. Common sense prevailed for the song, however. "Over The Rainbow" stayed in the picture and won an Academy Award.
Lyrics: When all the world is a hopeless jumble And the raindrops tumble all around, Heaven opens a magic lane. When all the clouds darken up the skyway There's a rainbow highway to be found, Leading from your window pane To a place behind the sun, Just a step beyond the rain. Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high, There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby. Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue, And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true. Someday I'll wish upon a star and wake up where the clouds are far behind me. Where troubles melt like lemon drops away above the chimney tops, That's where you'll find me. Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly. Birds fly over the rainbow; why, then, oh why can't I? (orchestra interlude) Someday I'll wish upon a star and wake up where the clouds are far behind me. Where troubles melt like lemon drops away above the chimney tops, That's where you'll find me. Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly. Birds fly over the rainbow; why, then, oh why can't I? If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow, Why, oh why can't I?
The Federal Government, the Reagan Administration, once spent millions investigating and seeking out the character from the Wizzard of Oz, Dorothy Gale. They considered her to be a National Security Threat. [Operation: Friends of Dorothy] True Story!
Pull the other one. I was around at the time and there was never any such kak as that. Dorothy Gale was a literary character who had first appeared in a book in 1900, as the entire world knew.
Its kinda weird to think a simple doki doki literature club mod made me find this song... People were right when they said "life is full of unpredictable things"
Some drugs like Cocaine can do that and Judy was known to be using both 'uppers' and 'downers' as was common practice back during the Hollywood Studio System (1920 to 1960) to keep pace with those grueling movie schedules.
Came back after watching Pearl. Damn good movie but mentally and emotionally draining. And I saw the similarities. Except Pearl didn’t have Dorothy’s sense of empathy or kindness. Dorothy didn’t have an abusive mother……….or kill innocent small animals for no damn good reason….. 👠 🌈 🧙♀️ 🙊 🤖 🦁

@@MaskedMan66It was the ending of Life With Judy Garland that helped me face that reality

My favorite movie. I'm 60
BASS CLARINET IN THE BACKGROUND 🎉😍😍😍🥳🤩
I don’t know why this song always made me kinda sad in a movie that’s otherwise supposed to be more casual. Maybe because Garland was always treated like shit at a young age and her life was always plagued by issues :(
But at the same time perhaps this song was purposely meant to feel like Dorothy felt upset and that it successfully works
My would watch every year with me. In the 1970 s that's all we had was a television that would get off the couch! Sofa And manually changing the channel
Happy Autumn 2024! Happy Harvest 2024!
I answered a question asked by a DJ. He asked what was Frances Gumm's stage name. I called in and said, "Judy Garland!"
He asked me if I can impersonate her. I started to sing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." He put me on hold and then had me sing it on the air-live!

while watching this vid, It's really sad to think that Judy Garland and Toto are no longer with us😢

Toto's real name was Terry and was a female Cairn Terrier. She had been in a few movies before and earned a higher salary than some human actors.
@@chrishouse7522 No, her trainer earned a salary.
You mean short-sighted.
Lyrics:
When all the world is a hopeless jumble And the raindrops tumble all around, Heaven opens a magic lane.
When all the clouds darken up the skyway There's a rainbow highway to be found, Leading from your window pane
To a place behind the sun, Just a step beyond the rain.
Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high, There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true.
Someday I'll wish upon a star and wake up where the clouds are far behind me. Where troubles melt like lemon drops away above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me.
Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly.
Birds fly over the rainbow; why, then, oh why can't I?
(orchestra interlude)
Someday I'll wish upon a star and wake up where the clouds are far behind me. Where troubles melt like lemon drops away above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me.
Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly.
Birds fly over the rainbow; why, then, oh why can't I?
If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow, Why, oh why can't I?

I can see the similarities between this song and the main BGM of Rainbow Islands.
The Federal Government, the Reagan Administration, once spent millions investigating and seeking out the character from the Wizzard of Oz, Dorothy Gale. They considered her to be a National Security Threat. [Operation: Friends of Dorothy] True Story!
You can't make this stuff up.

Underrated comment
Pull the other one. I was around at the time and there was never any such kak as that. Dorothy Gale was a literary character who had first appeared in a book in 1900, as the entire world knew.

Its kinda weird to think a simple doki doki literature club mod made me find this song... People were right when they said "life is full of unpredictable things"
it creeps me out how she never blink
Some drugs like Cocaine can do that and Judy was known to be using both 'uppers' and 'downers' as was common practice back during the Hollywood Studio System (1920 to 1960) to keep pace with those grueling movie schedules.
Is this Judy's song or Dorothy's song????
Good question. I remember once hearing a woman on the radio say, "When she sang "Over the Rainbow," Judy and Dorothy became one."
Both.

What was the intention of it? Most likely god(dog) being bound to the samsara(?) wheel a.k.a. we bound to the endless illusionary life.
