I started driving in 1980 - 6 yrs later AMC stopped CJ production.(I am an old guy.) When the YJ came out (like others) I hated them called them "Yuppie Jeeps" . . . blah, blah. I've owned old school CJ3B, CJ5, J10s, etc. (BTW you ain't' seen rust till you've owned a 70s-80s CJ) Sep 2017 I bought a near mint 94 YJ & I love it ~ I take back all the insults I made about YJs. It's the best Jeep I've owned. But you hit the nail on the head. Pre-1995 are still all Jeep & have all the old Jeep issues. So for those wanting "mall crawler comfort" don't get a pre-95 Jeep.
I just picked up a 1994 YJ . Bit of a project but the frame, engine and trans are all good and rust is minimal. (only windshield) I cannot wait to fix it up and get it as pretty as your guys and go explore my logging roads. My yj has a 4 cylinder 5 speed with 210,000kms. (4500$ canadian for anybody wondering)
I have a 1991 Jeep Wrangler Renegade, 4.0, 5 speed, A/C hardtop. 220,000 miles still runs like a top. I have NO rust anywhere. I have to open a window to close the doors because it so sealed. And because the Jeep is air and water tight I can go to Lake Tahoe in the winter and the heater is very comfortable. I did replace my cowl seal because I notice water under the passengers side rug, at first I thought it was the heater core, so I bypassed the the heater core hoses and found I still had the leak so that's when I replaced my cowl seal, now air and water tight. I have no cracks on my dash pad, dash, glove box and console, still like new. I do agree that the console cup holders are to shallow. I just replaced my Rear Differential Trac-Loc: Dana 35, 355 gears with a 912A569 Eaton Detroit Truetrac Differential, just for convenience, (NO MORE FREQUENT GEAR OIL CHANGES NO MORE FRICTION DISCS AND NO MORE ADDITIVES) not because the original locker was bad, it was like new when I removed it. There is 2 things I wish it had, cruise control and more interior room, like the LJ. Thanks for your review.
I had the same issue with the heating. It would literally just blow cold air in sub freezing Temps. I bought some cheapo 1000w ebay Chinese car heater, wired it up just to see if it would do anything and given how small the yj is, it actually warmed it up and kept it warm on the highway. The only problem is the Alternator struggles while idling if I have my brights, leds, and heater on at the same time but I just slapped on a capacitor bank and boom! That thing is golden. So $30 for the heater and $12 for the cap bank, I definitely recommend it!
Mine will run me out also. Make sure the vent closes all the way when you select heat/defrost and that your heater core is not clogged. Also that you have a proper thermostat installed and the radiator cap is not worn out...
A great walk around video to explain the YJ differences. I enjoyed seeing the two different setups of the YJ model you and your friend did. It makes me appreciate and realize my YJ is a diamond in the rough. YJ's Leak, accept it Dave and move on. I have a whole new perspective on my YJ now. Thanks
You’re absolutely right about the rust and I have it bad in the same spot. I’m trying to learn how to prevent any further damage on my 92 yj, but I don’t have anyone to teach me so it’s pretty tricky.
@@connor4961 since I made this comment I’ve sprayed my undercarriage with fluid film so it should be safe for now. However the back right bit of the frame has a hole rusted clean through so I’ll have to get that fixed eventually 😭😭
If it's a manual the reverse grind is actually because the reverse gear is not synced And you have to wait for the transmission to stop spinning before you can try and put it reverse. This is completely normal and if you try it I think you'll find that it works. And the heaters don't really start working until you start moving
You know what really sucks for heater's besides YJ's,.. try drive a CJ soft top in the winter? you got to keep cover's in the Jeep all times in the winter, Ooh yeah especially when a "soft" door fly's open when you turn a corner!, real nice!
I hear you , been there and done that. I really miss my old 79 CJ7 Renegade. Mine was missing the bars that go above the doors when I bought it. Soft top would blow up like a balloon driving down the road, froze my ass off during winter.
my heater works great in my 95, but i do have a hard top, so maybe that makes a differences. as far as rust goes i haven't had the same issue but that not to say its not a problem. but my yj came from CA so maybe that helped with preserving it a little. both of these look really clean nice job.
Your leaks are due to body panel caulking! Take 3m auto caulk to where the panels meet(: Cheers, from a '95 owner! Also i love tuffy center consoles! Check them out!
Love my '95 YJ! Has been very reliable for many years. 4.0 engine is one of the best ever (never dies). Leaks can be minimized with good weather striping, but it's hard to stop all leaks, especially if you have a soft top. The heater has never been a problem for me (I just wear a heavy jacket if it's cold). Remember, CJs and Wranglers were never made for comfort. They are made to go where most other vehicles can't go. That's why we love them!
YJ's do have the most unique look due to those sexy square headlights! I recently purchased an 89 with the 4.2 liter 258 six with the AX-15 5 speed. I love my YJ, even though it has leaf springs! You just don't see many nice ones out on the road. I guess I'm lucky, with the hard top and steel doors my heater works enough to keep you warm. My A/C also blows cold which is a huge plus for me.
I have an 88, besides the dumb Peugeot trans, the rest is PERFECT CONDITION. That 4.2 is a total dog though. It's painful in the freeway but it's still my daily driver. I'm that jeep guy driving it in winter and summer only a bikini top. The only thing that is a pain in the cold is the carburetor

Try checking the vent on the right side of your jeep. If it doesn't close properly you will get a massive cold air leak making it hard for the heater to keep up. As far as water leaking goes make sure the air inlet at the bottom of the hood on the outside is clear of debris and the hose drain in the engine compartment runs free...
I am a little late to the posting party, but heater-wise you have clearly never experienced a CJ5, lol! The heater in my YJ is awesome. As for rust I think that is dependent on where you live. I live in Western Colorado where we have very few rust issue, and again unlike a CJ5 which rusts anywhere! Other than those issues I liked your comparisons. Nice work!!
Awesome video bro... I agree the YJ’s are the best & unique. so for the heat and the leaking, I've had my 89 YJ for about 3 months(ish) now, 150k miles. And I've never had any leaking through my top, nor through the doors or through the huge rust hole I have under the pedals on the driver side, I have a soft top and get the heater not "keeping up at high speeds" but that's just the lack of ability to totally seal the soft tops. mine leaks air, but still keeps it warm inside (20 degree weather in MN). Also on the winshield on that aluminum piece at the botton of the winshield they leak true there a lot. Good luck let me know!
My 94' YJ is basically stock except for the 2.5 in. Spring lift but it is a strong runner for what I use it for. I was thinking about doing a axle/gear swap for better wheeling and using 3/4 or one tons but that's not yet in the "budget ". I have some of the same issues as you do with rust around the windshield frame. I also switched to the same center console as yours because the stock one sucks and won't lock and the Heater worked great until the blower motor went out. I've had my 93 for 15 years and the main problems are 1 the stock dana 35 which i swapped for a Ford 8.8, the damn crank sensor which caused me most of my problems, low power which I solved with porting and an m90 supercharger. Now I see it as the perfect yj and it always gets me home
This is the one I want to get my hands on I always see the tj I usually see it at the Puerto Rican day festival or when I visit family in Puerto Rico these cars are popular over there since we have a lot of mountains and hit and restaurant up there it's the only way you can get up there but I really want yj Jeep Wrangler
I love my 4.0 YJ it’s my car I got while in high school and 10 years later I still have it. This Jeep has never let me down and I will never sell it.
You had me laughing at your complaints on the air/heat hate comments. I don't have vents either in my 87 YJ and don't care. I live in the Florida Keys(islands). Love the air coming in-don't have doors either LOL.
I have a 91 and am in Canada...I back flushed the heater core and have a nauseating amount of heat..let it run 5 minutes and you're good to go..have to roll the window down its so hot sometimes.
I had the opportunity to purchase a 94 to a 01 Cherokee. You making me want to go back for the wrangler lol it’s winter and it came with only bikini top. At 97 k miles. 8250$ I should have taken it
Im 14 and racked up 14k to buy one.. is that a good idea? I have to pay for insurance, registration, and gas. Its a white 89 with a tan soft top and rebuilt interior and a bunch of new stuff. rust free and works great. good idea?
in Europe we clean inside the house , cars etc and after comes the outside work. Looks like in America only the outside matters. Nice looking machines , from the outside, off course.
convertible and take the doors off 4 wheel low number one awesomeness part . YESS haha heater is very hot so hot it will crack that flat windshield if you heat it too quick. Yeah take care of these man they are sweet dude.
the dana 35's are decent until you go over a 33 inch tire. dana 44's and ford 8.8,s are good easy swaps, there pretty tuff axels and can handle hell pretty well
Hey I just run across your video my TJ was having a leak it also a soft top so I realized the carpet was never wet when driving in a down poor so one day it was pooring down I went out and and check it out and where my leaking was is around the door where the half door ruber goes on top of the door I put a penny in between the ruber and it will drain and not let the water run down the door panel and in the floor. If your driveing the g's of taken off let the water run down the door channel and would not get the floor wet. But setting it would hold water some how on that rubber.
Buy a wire cup brush for an angle grinder ; if you don't have an angle grinder buy a cheap Harbor Freight one; scrub as much rust off as possible. Then get some rust converter and spray it down; this will convert the rust to iron oxide and stop it from spreading. If you don't have any rust that needs metal replaced then just brush on the POR-15 and you just saved your frame ! Let the rust converter dry completely ; it will turn the rust black ; this is normal and will help the paint stick then paint.
Speak for yourself. my 1995 yj has unbelievable heat, within minutes you are cutting it off even in 20 degree weather. But it did come with factory A/C so i have plenty of vents. But i will agree, I love the YJ models over any other jeep made.
Manufacturers stop putting undercoat on vehicles, that's why they rust so bad now a days. If you buy a vehicle, the best thing to do is get it undercoated. Vehicles now only have paint.
@@wesleysmith995 I believe the salt chemicals they use now a days is also more corrosive than the road salt they used to use ~30 years ago. The problem with undercoating if not maintained is that it would crack, then collect salt in the cracks to start the rust. I agree if you keep up on it that the undercoating is helpful.
How are the exteriors so clean looking and the inside looks like a high school kid owns it?? lol. Awesome looking Jeeps until the doors opened. YJs are underrated. Great job showcasing how cool they are. Great video!!
Hey guys thanks for the video it was very informative , I just picked up an 87 yj myself and is now scrolling thru to see what toys I can buy for it , do you guys think you can do a video on the Add ones you have on the jeeps . Like light bars and mounting brackets etc. Thanks again for the info p.s. I’ll be ripping my carpets out this spring lol
You got a low ass thermoatat then. Crank that thing up to a 220°F and you'll be fine. Also, you might be trying to drive it too fast. A lot of Wrangler guys try and drive them over 45mph but Jeeps ain't meant to go fast. As Popcorn Sutton said "the slower you run it the better product your likker come out" but in this case, the slower you run it the better heat your Jeep come out.
@@bradbergstad5287 Here is a link where Jake talks about the mods on his 91; ua-cam.com/video/Z1QfwDJuLHw/v-deo.html ; he talks about how he had to make the tj fenders work as they don't fit the existing holes. I am putting TJ 3.75 Rubicon flares on my YJ and cutting all the overhang and stitch weld the seam with my TIG. You can see how the TJ flares really open up the wheel wells . I looked at his video again and I think he has the 6" and wished he had gotten the 4" anyway he will have to clear up the width of his Xenon's but they were for a TJ no doubt.
I have a 95 YJ with the 2.5 that I use for my DD with the occasional mud hole trip or trail. Was there a power loss before the new rear end or did the new rear end compensate for that?
@@mcooler4 We both went back with the same stock ratio. So power remained the same. You can choose to regear both axles to make up power with a lower ratio. Your main loss in power will definitely come from the larger tires
I just got a 95 YJ wrangler with 33 inch tires and 2.5L 4 cylinder engine. 6 inch lift. This thing is slow as heck. What do you recommend for gears? Also is it easy to upgrade the gears? Thanks Update: I traded my YJ wrangler for another YJ Sahara 4.0 with TJ swapped frame. This wrangler is exactly what I wanted.
My 93 heater will roast you & i get zero water in mine even in a heavy downpour, mine used to leak water till I ran a piece of wire through the cow and make sure the drain under the Jeep wasn't plugged up been great ever since. The previous owner of mine put in a rem engine & a 8.8 plus 3" lift with 5 new 33's but my gas mileage is only 18mpg that SUCKS
Seems like the "flaws" are typical of what Jeep was originally meant to be: simple, affordable, easy to fix. As an Army mechanic in the early 80s, Jeeps were still around and simplistic. The concept of the vehicle, as a military transporter, was to be functional, durable, and not for civilian pleasure. YJs have that characteristic. Post-YJs do not. Modern 'Jeeps' are much more comfy, not as dependable. Automatic transmissions? Almost insulting. With older Jeeps one must DRIVE it while modern versions drive you. It would be nice if Stelantis actually made a back-to-the-basics model as an option.
That’s funny. My yj heats up very fast, and in a matter of minutes I’m sweating.

Getting a job soon and I plan on modding my yj before going into the military
Ty in advance
I think my ‘90 YJ shares a lot of CJ features, with the 258 ci, slant roll bar, mechanical fuel pump in 20 gal tank. Almost a CYJ!
I had a 79 Renegade CJ7 , sold years ago. Now I have a 90 YJ . Both are 4.2 motors, slant rollback. Like the 90 YJ , but wish had kept the 79 CJ.
I jumped it multiple times 😂 played tug of war with a tree and won, drove down fire roads like Robbie Gordon at the Baja 1000😂 and many other fun times. This Jeep has never let me down and I will never sell it.
Nice jeeps!! Where did you find the black and red shift knob for the transmission at??
8250$ I should have taken it
Your heater problem is not a factor in Southern California, my heater works amazingly. Maybe check your heater core. Also, no rust here in Cali.
I love my 93 Wrangler Sahara YJ and specially squared headlights🔥🔥🔥
Top thing I hate on my 89? The damn windshield wipers that I can’t find one small enough
NAPA AUTO PARTS HAS THE RIGHT ONES
I got a 302 in my yj with 6 inch lift rebuilt diffs and rebuilt ax15
Yj owner...the best Jeep of all 👍👍👍
Im 14 and racked up 14k to buy one.. is that a good idea? I have to pay for insurance, registration, and gas. Its a white 89 with a tan soft top and rebuilt interior and a bunch of new stuff. rust free and works great. good idea?
@@varick6501 if the condition is us you say go for it you won’t regret it 👍👍👍
@@dolarmangr Can I include the link and will you mind taking a look? As long as you won't buy it before me 😂😂

@@dolarmangr did it go through?
in Europe we clean inside the house , cars etc and after comes the outside work. Looks like in America only the outside matters. Nice looking machines , from the outside, off course.
The cowel vent has a drain spout and they clog. I had the same problem water draining on my foot until i figured it ou
I bought Seat heaters actually made in Wisconsin a few years ago and they work great
convertible and take the doors off 4 wheel low number one awesomeness part . YESS haha heater is very hot so hot it will crack that flat windshield if you heat it too quick. Yeah take care of these man they are sweet dude.
the dana 35's are decent until you go over a 33 inch tire. dana 44's and ford 8.8,s are good easy swaps, there pretty tuff axels and can handle hell pretty well
95's have galvanized metal bodies a little better against rust
What did you use to tint your light bar?
Yeah lol
Hey I just run across your video my TJ was having a leak it also a soft top so I realized the carpet was never wet when driving in a down poor so one day it was pooring down I went out and and check it out and where my leaking was is around the door where the half door ruber goes on top of the door I put a penny in between the ruber and it will drain and not let the water run down the door panel and in the floor. If your driveing the g's of taken off let the water run down the door channel and would not get the floor wet. But setting it would hold water some how on that rubber.
My a/c works great and heat makes me sweat. It’s in perfect shape and has 24,000 miles
24k miles?! Sooo would you consider selling it to me?! Ha
Hi there.. Can you tell me what did you use for the rusty frame? Thanks
POR-15. You can buy it off Amazon and just brush it on like paint
Rusty frame? I suggest buying one from a different part of the country like az
I’m looking at getting a 1990 yj for a project jeep since I had to sell my jk
Speak for yourself. my 1995 yj has unbelievable heat, within minutes you are cutting it off even in 20 degree weather. But it did come with factory A/C so i have plenty of vents. But i will agree, I love the YJ models over any other jeep made.
I love my '93 YJ, except for the freaking rust issues.
Those first generation Jeep Wranglers are rare nowadays. They were produced from 1987 through either 1995 or 96.
I got a 93 a few days ago, it has 191000 on the 4 cyl. in it, not to bad body and frame, traded a 93 f150 i built literally from the ground up.
How are the exteriors so clean looking and the inside looks like a high school kid owns it?? lol. Awesome looking Jeeps until the doors opened. YJs are underrated. Great job showcasing how cool they are. Great video!!
What brackets did you use to mount the light bar and the KC lights? I am trying to find the right one for my YJ.
Would you still recommend a yj over a jk?
Those look amazing on the outside not so much on the inside lol
Um, try finder any late 80s, early 90s vehicles with good looking interiors.
My heater keeps me warm with the single cab soft top lol
starters on YJ 2.5 &4.0 are different casings not compatible interchange
I wish I know how to do all the work on my YJ, this Jeep life is expensive 🤦🏻♀️
Jeep stands for Just Empty Every Pocket. Lol, labour of love .
find a mechanically inclined boyfriend -
i have a 91yj with the 4.0, i just want to know what front bumper you guys have, i like the look of it.
Bruh imagine having ac and power steering. And the heater on mine works great XD
First thing , change the stock trans. 87 trans not good. Very weak and break down alot .
Thanks for the info.
Need a little interior work. The outside looks great
What shifter do you have in the gray Jeep
Our yj heater was insanely hot it blew super hot heaven center events in the dash like a TJ sucks cuz it just works as your face
My 1993 YJ will heats up super fast. If you are having trouble with heat, try flushing your system. There are plenty of videos on UA-cam for that.
Just bought a 94 YJ, what was that product you used to treat your frames? Have had several Cherokee's but never a YJ and excited bout it
POR-15
I hear yjs are hard to find these days.. I’m just gonna get a tj for comfort.
What size tires are you running and did you add any lift. I am trying to decide whether to go with 33's or 35's. 35s will have to have a lift
go with the 35's you wont have to lift it and your stock gears will work just fine !!!
My heater works great
You got a low ass thermoatat then.
Got no leaks in my 94 yj 2.5
You want a good grey dash? I'm over in Cherokee and fixing to swap mine out.
What fenders on the red one?
I want to know also! They look like tj flares???
They are stock Jeep yj fenders. Now the flairs Jake has on his red jeep I think are Xenon 9190 4" Flat Panel Flare Kit in Black
And @ Brad yes these are intended for the tj but work fine for the yj ; in fact give more clearance !
@@your2nd if you find any tj flares over there send them to me!
What gears do you guys run in the 8.8
What size tires are on the 2.5?
Both Jeep running 33x12.50s
I have a 95 YJ with the 2.5 that I use for my DD with the occasional mud hole trip or trail. Was there a power loss before the new rear end or did the new rear end compensate for that?
@@mcooler4 We both went back with the same stock ratio. So power remained the same. You can choose to regear both axles to make up power with a lower ratio. Your main loss in power will definitely come from the larger tires
I always brag on m YJ heater, it’s toasty.
Put dana 44 s on a TJ with kings coilovers front and rear . Was a 30 day build lol
How much would you say you’ve put into the 4.0?
what size tires you guys got?
I just got a 95 YJ wrangler with 33 inch tires and 2.5L 4 cylinder engine. 6 inch lift. This thing is slow as heck. What do you recommend for gears? Also is it easy to upgrade the gears? Thanks
Update:
I traded my YJ wrangler for another YJ Sahara 4.0 with TJ swapped frame. This wrangler is exactly what I wanted.
Is this your first jeep?
My 93 heater will roast you & i get zero water in mine even in a heavy downpour, mine used to leak water till I ran a piece of wire through the cow and make sure the drain under the Jeep wasn't plugged up been great ever since. The previous owner of mine put in a rem engine & a 8.8 plus 3" lift with 5 new 33's but my gas mileage is only 18mpg that SUCKS
But I have a hard top and full door's
Just picked up a 90yj. My 3rd and 4th gear grind pretty bad. Do you think I should rebuild it or buy a used one and throw it in?
Rebuild, 90 model has very good trans. I have a 90 myself.
We have two YJs and one CJ7 with hard tops and they all leak. Team Leaf Spring!
Clean out the damn rubber tube under the hood cal vent.
Shut up
