Used to get taken to the hospital fairly regularly for this before I was 5. They were some of the earliest and scariest memories I ever had, looking at my mom driving through flashing yellow lights at 3am while I was struggling to just get the smallest amount of air in my chest. The last time definitely would have killed me if it wasn't for how quickly I got treatment.
I am working through mandatory training at the moment - multiple modules of Paediatric CPG, all of which have been quite wordy and convoluted at times. This has been EXTREMELY helpful and easy to understand. Thank you!!
Just got diagnosed with this at the doctor today ... Never in my life had I heard of something like this disease, every night has been terrying without being able to breath, thank you for such a informative video
@@rosauramartinez9492 thank you, he’s well now. Day 2 and 3 are probably the worst. My doctor says give redipred at around dinner time. And it helps, can only use it for two nights though. It’s really difficult to watch them go through it but it does get better!
The reason behind the stridor and obstructed airways are caused by the immune response to the invading virus to the respiratory tract, especially the larynx and trachea here in the croup setting. Dexamethasone decreases the immune response to alleviate the obstruction via reducing the edema and constriction in the airways, thus improving the case all around.
My son get’s spasmodic croup. Randomly at night sometimes.. it comes on so quick and worsens to an emergency in just 5-10 mins ... I have to rush to the fridge and get a dose of steroid and it’s like magic calms it down with in minutes until it’s all gone about 20-30 mins later. We never really knew what he had exactly, until recently this new name spasmodic croup surfaced. His older brother used to get it to so definitely has to have a genetic factor
Is this steroid over the counter or prescribed? My 4 year old gets this every year and now my 3 year old. I normally control it by taking them outside. Luckily it’s at night when it’s fresh out. They breath immediately
I still remember when I had croup. I was 7. I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn’t breathe. My dad rushed me to the hospital. I just remember having an oxygen mask shoved on my face and looking up at a whole bunch of doctors
Apparently it's so rare in adults, that it was only detected in 1990. I totally lucked out, and seem to be getting it with a few years in between.. as a 30something
I get this every year and ive had enough of it EVER time i get is i have to be rushed to the hospital bc i cant breath and i can tell i have it right now but its just a cough and soon i will not be able to breath 😭 and this has been happening for 11 years now and its probably gonne hit tomorrow wish me luck pleas

i woke up with croup this morning, i’ve suffered with it for my whole life. but if u get it young u usally grow out of it, which i thought i did because i didn’t have it for 4 years. usually it starts with a cold, then moves on to croup. but i would recommend going outside to get fresh air and taking dexta medicine. when u feel better go have a hot shower. then you should feel much better. and after that it’s usually all good. hope this helps!
Thanks for the video. I have a question- Can croup also cause expiratory stridor? I remember a question stem from one of the NBMEs had mentioned an expiratory stridor
I’ve had in my entire life. Started when I was about 2 to 3 years old, and now I am 41. Worst part about it is my four year-old just developed it, and started barking like a seal today. I hope it goes away soon, because it has been one of the worst portions of my life.
