Ermanno, this has been a great video as usual. The way you explain every steps, how and why it is done is amazing! For those new users asking for a new user friendly installation, this is it. Actually you should start you journey with the distro of your choice, learn basic things, terminal commands, file system, etc. But, no matter what distro you use, debian, red hat or arch based, installing Arch linux the "Arch Way" (better it is Ermanno explained) should be in your linux learning plans.

This has been one of the best straight forward install of Arch. Been struggling with UEFI/MBR setup but you nailed it and now I understood what I messed up in the initial setting with the VM by only giving it a taste.
In VirtualBox I had to opt in the checkbox "Enable EFI". It makes sense! =) Otherwise it would fail to install grub, and the specification for the target system also helped!
Well i broke my arch install for like the 17th time this video will finally break the cycle of continuous frustration and depression kicking in at 4k 60fps . THANKS MATE great video ! This helps 😀

For anyone who is facing a sudden screen freezing after using system for a while it is because of xf86-video-intel driver. It has a bug. After uninstalling it there is no freezing anymore.
You are the professor in the university of UA-cam in the department of Linux. These tutorials are awesome.
I followed your tutorial for the MBR system and it was success. (on a HP Probook 6460b)
However for UEFI it did not worked just as fine. Everything is installed. I can start by going into BIOS (Escape during start up) and choose to start from EFI/ GRUB.
But when just pressing start it will not find a boot image.
I have a HP Probook 6470b for this installation.
Secure boot is disabled as most post in forum tells this is important.
It booted into UEFI (native) mode when using the installation media.
I created GPT partition table
/dev/sda1 +300M with type EFI
/dev/sda2 +37G ext4 for root
/dev/sda2 (rest of disc) ext4 for home
I followed allmost to the point your tutorial for UEFI. (only exception is a home partition)
Previously I tried to install Manjaro on this machine. No problem. And Manjaro was installed with UEFI.
Any idea what to do?
Hi Ulf! Thanks for the feedback! The problem with UEFI is not new, especially in Hp laptops. Depending on the model some motherboards don’t allow other bootloaders than Windows unless you change some of the settings in the BIOS. There might be a setting there where you can change that. Hope it works! It works fine for example on Macs and on a Dell Xps 15 I have here. The UEFI implementation can be different by every vendor.

Got to say I got it working.
However. I took an easy way out. I installed Manjaro beside Arch.
Upside of that: I got both distributions working. Manjaros installer fixed GRUB for me.
Downside: I feel like a cheater. Now I cannot tell how to fix this kind of problem with HP Probook 6470B.
Well. I learned a lot about partitioning when I reinstalled around ten times. The installation process is also not so frightening anymore.
I will be following your tutorials about other aspects of Arch.

Very good tutorial i just used NANO editor because VIM was stuck something.
When I type "swapon: /swapfile" I only get "swapon: /swapfile: swapon failed: Invalid argument"
EDIT: Turned out that it seems like I haven't enabled UEFI and I don't know any way to do so on VMWare.. So I'll do it now in VBox again...
But the more often you do it the better you'll learn it :)
Since I have another partition with windows on, after your steps for the Grub configuration (26:36) I added these one:
1) mkdir /windows
2) mount /dev/nvme0n1p1 /windows #not sure if this is necessary, since after these two commands i re-entered:
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg. #nothing new happened, so I continued in this way:
3) pacman -S os-prober
4) os-prober
et voilà: after entered this last command the Windows partition appeared in the output
I hope this helps, and I'd also wonder if you could be so kind to tell me if this was the right way to do it, or if it were a more "elegant" way (I'm quite sure the latter option is the right one... ;-)

Ermanno, I've perform the installation following your tutorial and everything went fine, but I've discovered that I have no sound (pulseaudio shows only the dummy output), the microphone is not working nor recognized, and the only solution is to use a headset with microphone, if I want to have a conference call.
My machine is a Thinkpad X11 Carbon 8th gen: do you ever had such a problem?
UPDATE: I've just install sof-firmware, rebooted, and voilà: everything was working out-of-the-box! :-)
I post this in case somebody else has encountered my same problem, sorry for having invaded this space, but maybe this could be a sign for another video for multimedia on Archlinux ;-)

In VirtManager I can't install Grub with the efivars not supported error kicking up a fuss. Hmm ... Going through the Wiki.
You'll need to make sure to customize the VM and select the UEFI option, otherwise it will not work.
Can you help me please? I tried to install efi on mbr disk, but when I try to launch the system I can't see any disks I mean in /dev i have no sda sdb sdc or other, only tty and other stuff. The LifeUSB was mbr too and it work correctly with my computer, but why I can launch my system this way???😢

I am not sure I understand. You can' have a efi partition on an mbr/legacy system. As for not being able to see the disks, you might try to change the storage operation in the BIOS to AHCI.

did it like for like and the bios is not recognising the ssd at all i can still boot into the live iso and chroot into the instalation but i shall troubelshoot tomorrow :D
Fixed! Reset bios settings then set to AHCI, enable legacy ROMs, secureboot disabled and point the boot options to the efi partition. I updated the bios while windows was still installed so running the latest version.
Really happy shall sort the xorg install and window manager tomorrow, love your guides dude!
Hey Jason! Thanks! Yes the operation mode for the ssd has to AHCI otherwise you won’t be able to see it. I might have to mention that in the next installation.
Yea I'd done that for the installation as it said on the XPS wiki page but for some reason post installation it wouldn't recognize it untill I reset the bios settings back to default and set it to achi again :D

Hi Ludwig, every month there's something a little different (encryption, filesystem, partitioning scheme, bootloader, DE, WM and others).
I am getting an error on the command: systemctl enable org.cups.cupsd -> Failed to enable unit, unit org.cups.cupsd.service does not exist.
Did something change in the Arch installation?
If you look in the video description you'll see why. Recently the service has been renamed cups instead of org.cups.cupsd.

Hi, lovely video btw, i have a laptop which has only legacy bios, uefi with csm (Hybrid) and uefi native, but the uefi native doesn't work, it's a HP elitebook 840 G2, i have Windows installed on it and i want to be able to dual boot between arch and Windows. I used disk management on windows to make a partition of 80Gb. Btw, only when i select the uefi with csm (Hybrid) and or legacy bios can the laptop boot into windows. I was wondering, if i used the 80Gb partition i had made to do the installation on, following your tutorial from the MBR time stamp, would it mess up my other files ? Or the disk as a whole?
Hi I have a question. On a fresh Arch installation why there's no sound access when logged in as root, the sound bar is muted. Regular user accounts have no issues. I've installed alsa-utils Pulseaudio-alsa & pavucontrol packages.
Usually it should work by just rising the volume. For some reason it starts with volume at 0 level.
@@eflinux Raising the volume isn't solving the problem, is still disabled.
Sound is only working when running "pulseaudio -D" as root on each start up.
Even the sound bar is missing in top right corner in gnome.
That’s odd. Gnome should have all the components. Have you installed the regular pulseaudio package and pulseaudio-bluetooth.
@@eflinux Yes Bluetooth working perfectly on regular user accounts I haven't tried it on root. I've installed all the necessary packages bluez-cups bluez-utils alsa-utils alsa-firmware pulseaudio-alsa pulseaudio-bluetooth pavucontrol, blueman, xorg-drivers.
Check that the root user belongs to the audio group. In some cases it disabled by default.
Thanks for another great video, Ernanno. What drives me nuts doing these practice installs under VirtualBox VM's is that the only window I have during the install is 800x600. I wish there were a way to make it way bigger without effecting the quality of the font (ie, fonts get very fuzzy on screen). Anyone?
You could try VMWare player. It’s free for personal use. Or install the guest additions in the ISO.
any reason you didn't install wpa_supplicant and wireless_tools? are they not needed anymore?
wpa_supplicant is included in NetworkManager, wireless_tools could be installed though if you have problems with the adapter.

Hi Ermano, when following your guide everything goes great accept when installing with pacman for the second time (pacman -S grub efibootmgr ect....) I get an error: Failed to open file "/sys/devices/system/cpu/microcode/reload": Read-only file system.... I searched online and ppl said to ignore it.. but actually when you boot up the machine again intel-ucode is not installed (SO YOU HAVE TO INSTALL IT FOR INTEL, and amd-ucode for amd)... therefore you need to install it again...

When rebooting and being at the prompt (already from the disk) I cannot access the iwctl command, but in the boot stage with the Flash drive I was able to correctly. Is there a way to install that service on disk in the initial stage? Because my only solution was to connect an ethernet cable, I emphasize that it happens to me when I reboot, not at the initial stage. Thanks
Hi Cesar, that's because we installed NetworkManager and not iwd. If NetworManager is installed and enabled you should be able to connect.

@@eflinux Recently I use the mentioned command, which the system accepts without issue, but when I put wctl, it returns "bash: iwctl: command not found" 😭
That's because iwd is installed only yin the live ISO (unless you decide to install it in the system)
I don't know if this is happening to the others, but on the wifi network when about 10 minutes the computer freezes and I have to restart it.
This does not happen in the wired network.

first i was happy about iwd. then I tried to instll it on the laptop (doesnt work).
Can you ping something? What wifi adapter do you have?

Thanks for this video, really helpful. I'm stuck on one point, I've manager to install arch properly and got grub to work but only manually - I need to go into my UEFI and rquest bootloading from file navigator, in which point, after navigating to grubx64.efi's path I'm getting grub to boot properly.
Did you have an experience solving such issue? Any good advice will be great!. I'm using HP ProBook 450 G2 if it helps

In some laptops, especially HP the boot directory expected is /boot/efi/EFI. Someone else in the comments had the same issue some time ago. I don’t know if that applies to your mode though.
for the coming months...could you install systemd instead of grub fo a change? maybe systemd+btrfs+lvm? or a combination of those ?

You can with the ArchISO package. I did a video on that, but it is outdated. I will have to update that.

I had problems with my HP Probook 6470b. After installation I just got: "no bootable image was found"
I found a solution for this in the Arch forum. One guy created the folder /boot/efi/EFI/BOOT
Into this he copied the grubx64.efi file from /boot/efi/EFI/GRUB with the new name: bootx64.efi.
My laptop can find this >>/boot/efi/EFI/BOOT/bootx64.efi

the error says there is a damgedtar archive and vim and intel-ucode was not found

The Anarchy Installer is the best. It's easy to use and you can have a fully functional Arch system up and running in 10 minutes. It will allow you to install any DE or WM available in the Arch System. Also the system will be fully updated, that is, you won't have to do an update immediately after installation, even if it's the middle or end of the month. I am not related in any way to the Anarchy Installer and I have nothing to do with them, but it's the only installer, and I tried many, I've had success with. Also, I've tried installing Arch the manual way many times, but never had success; I always messed something up. If you want an easy and user friendly Arch installer try Anarchy: anarchyinstaller.org/
That’s definitely another good one.
So I did your guide yesterday and it worked fine... But today when I boot up my laptop, then I am only greeted by the login screen. After that the desktop doesnt show up! On my first partition I get the message ''Recovering Journal'' Wich if I understood right means that the system didn't shut off properly. I have tried to go into my live installation to maybe fix the problem, but the same thing happens, so I don't have any way to get root and resolve the problem! It's weird bc yesterday I shut my system off multiple times without any problems.
What desktop did you install?

I see you had a similar issue 3 months ago on another video. You have a gtx 750ti. It is probably a driver issue. You'll need to see which drivers you installed and eventually try another one. With some DE's there could be some issues.
@@eflinux But this time I installed it on my Laptop wich has intel hd graphics. But I guess you fix it, the same way you would with a dedicated graphics card?
If you have an Intel card and installed the xf86 driver, I recommend to remove it. This way, the modesetting driver will be automatically selected. It probably will work after that.
When I do Arch installs like this I don't have the ability to mount external drives. Is there an Arch app that I am missing?
It’s not different. USB devices will appear with lsblk. You’ll just need to create a mount point for them.
if its a ntfs hdd just install ntfs-3g by sudo pacman ntfs-3g
after that you can mount it in nautilus, dolphin or any other file explorer present

Following one of your previous videos for efi, I entered 1 for efi file system and after rebooting I got the "No Bootable Device", But now you chose 00f for that. Can it be the reason for the problem I had then?

sda1 500M
sda2 4G
sda3 20G
sda4 900G
mkfs.fat -F32 /dev/sda1
mkdir /mnt/boot
mount /dev/sda1 /mn/boot
mkswap /dev/sda2
swapon /dev/sda2
mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda3
mount /dev/sda3 /mnt
mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda4
mkdir /mnt/home
mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/home
------
and at the grub section:
grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot --bootloader-id=GRUB
which runs with no error
and then:
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
with no error
2 things. I assume there is a typo when you mount the boot partition (/mn). Also, some motherboards are not happy if the boot partition is not under /boot/efi. The grub conf file in this case should be adjusted accordingly.
11:09 what it mean MBR or EFI?
EFI for UEFI systems, MBR for legacy systems.
there two types of boot systems, the old one is mbr, and the new currently standard one is uefi/efi.
If you have a really old mobo follow the mbr instructions and vice versa.

Linux mint, in short gets the award for the best beginner distro. You can find more details over the Internet and get started with it. And also because its GUI is similar to Windows, it takes no time for a newbie or beginner to get started. Hope this will help also I'll provide you more help if you want :)
Try the Archfi script. It's quite simple.
