Altough things may seem different, in HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) seeking bind was not the primary goal in an engagement. Why hit each other's blades when you can simply lure him/her into an elegant trap and hit your opponent's openings without blade contact? In this video we want to show you some excercises (no free fighting) how we practice such techniques (and some bonus activities). Enjoy!
Music by The Prodigy - The Big Gun Down - check-out the official channel at / prodigychannel
Swords used: Pavel Moc Fechtschwerts (swords.cz, goo.gl/BeqUC)
Ensifer Feder (ensifer.carbonm...)
Techniques shown:
Nachreisen
Fehler
Double fehler
Absetzen
Ansetzen
Scheitelhau
Verkehren after Krumphau (Sperren, Wallerstein 4r)
Einlauffen mit Knopf (Knopf stossen)
It's a shame that there isn't more of this kind of swordfighting in movies and tv. you guys make this look spectacular enough!
it is an intention in einlauffen. when running in or staying in a close bind we try to create a partial pressure on the opponents sword to provoke him to do the same (+ a good cover with the potential to wind). Then we're trying to get to the openning in a "gap" when he stops to push for a while (either to go away or to try something else). the verkehren and subsequent holding of the sword from krump is a similar principle. You strongly hold him to "confuse" his fuhlen or break his sequence.
Got a chance to watch Martin's scheitelhau interpretation at his seminar at Swordfish and I really like it. Very dynamic.
I can see your point but your judgement is quite unfair. The difference between "stage compilation" and a technique presentation is very small when shooting videos, of course we could've done more movements to get the feeling more right, but that is not the aim.I know a lot of fencers which video presentations are quite crappy but they are very good fighters IRL and vice versa. It just doesn't matter. Purpose is different. BTW there is no Vlado in this video:) PLS check our other channel. Cheers
Genius. I want to be that good..............
Quite good, like always. I wish tehre was a historical longsword group around here
Excellent dynamics you have going on in this :)
Is it just me, or do those feders seem a little floppy?
Given how many of their videos don't involve stab-proof jackets, I don't think they want to be tournament stiff
ingni123456 good point.
hm, it wasn't blocked a few days ago, at least according to YT. we have an alternate channel at vimeo /johnmeadowcourt, videos are also uploaded there as well due YT policy
Wow 😮 I am a little bit shocked. It seems like own safety has nothing to do with this. Not in the sense that they might get hurt, but hitting without getting hit.
Great stuff guys. I saw you krumping with both edges is that correct? Do you have a preference for either. I am struggling applying force with the false edge. And why no gloves? Extra control?
Rim Andries Hi! It's correct. Both edges can be used for krump. It depends on what you want to do. Short edge has a stronger hold, long edge is more natural. But it fully depends on your preference. Each way has its pros and cons. Usually we don't use gloves when practicing - just in sparring or semi-controlled situations. Gloves limit you in many ways and lead to bad habits.
what particular aspects stuck out for you :)
Good sparring and impressive techniques! Lack of hand protection made me cringe due to my own personal experiences lol.
Really cool video, are you guys still training? When you say 'exercises' and not free fighting does that mean in your passes you know in advance what the attack is going to be, but the defence and follow up is free, or is the entire pass pre-determined?Do you always train with feders?
Sorry for the late answer! Yes, we're still training though I moved most of the video production to my personal channel.
Most of the assaults you see in this videos are predetermined plus some improvisation. It depends, we do all kinds of practice.
We do train with "feders" almost exclusively
Cheers
Great stuff! Inspiring.
Well done!!
the bind reminds me of wing chun trapping technique.. ppl get so focused on an elaborate concept they forget the basic the basic goal of simply attacking on the openings
+darthclone7 Bind is essential in certain cases and working in HEMA
isn't the foodwork a bit off? I mean I get that you want to deceive your opponent through bodylanguage, but having your backfoot off the ground like that seems dangerous to me. Especially when you talk about Ringen am schwert. I see no practical purpose in it, aside from gaining a few extra inches of length by going forth like that, but again, such footwork can be punished harshly by someone who's good at ringen.
Can these moves be used with Rawling Xtreme synthetic sparring sword?
+Secret7Lover More or less yes though standard swords have a completely different feeling in bind and of course attributes stemming from the material it's made from
Does blunt steel sword bend more than synthetic sword?
+Secret7Lover again it depends on many variables, some may bend more, some less. Shape of the blade, hardness, point of impact all influence the way a sword bends.
спасибо!
stop letting eachother hit eachother!
Well you need to inject more aliveness into this type of training to make it anything other than exercise. Vlado is just cutting and stopping. Plus the mistakes made are too obvious, nobody is going to do those out there in tournament fighting world. I assume this is the focus of the training now. It has no purpose in fencing.
Beat that Katana!
херня какаято...
такие в бою умирают первыми ...
These guys spar like kendo vets
херня какаято...
такие в бою умирают первыми ...
ну, иди подерись с ними)
если из Москвы, то приглашаю к нам на тренировку)
Oh, god, I love steel. I have to say, I wasn't originally a fan of the feders' blade profile, but it's definitely grown on me. Great video! Looks like you guys are having a blast! =D
I was liking this till you started jumping.
+Tyler Lalonde I do jump normally whilst sparring and know many other people who do the same. "Springen" in Lichtenauer's art isn't necessarily jumping into distance
Martin Fabian oh ok cool
good but, the protection, also one makes a movement and brakes, the other hits
use counterattacks
I tried the move on 1:03 on one of my swordfighting groups and it totally worked. Love your videos. Anytime I'm doing HEMA and I'm feeling exhausted I think back to the energy displayed in these videos!
Excellent interpretation of the krump. The best I've seen. Well done.
I know its a bit much asked but.... could you reupload the video without music? Its blocked in Germany because you used the prodigy... looking it with an anonymizer on is a pain.
Most outstanding & impressive (Great Job!)💯💯👍👍 Little gets rid of the bad blood better than a sword duel to the death, as I know for fact that most highly educated & cultivated people agree with me on that point (ignore the pun, granted it's there)😜😉
Great
great vid. Thanks
it is just a funny nickname. There is no such exact mention in the manuals, the masters sometimes mention "jumping" and we believe they meant jumping "up" as well as into distance
dude, you certainly have some enthusiasm and that is great! anyway i thought the description is quite clear, but let me me copypaste for you: "...In this video we want to show you some excercises (no free fighting) how we practice such techniques..." Or do you have the feeling that the both of us are fighting to the death?:) I would be honoured and pleased to see some of your practice videos. Do you have some to share?
If I may ask, are some if you sports fencers? If so, has sports fencing influenced your footwork and how you move?
@@Shiresgammai No, none of us has done sport fencing before when the video was shot.
@@johnmeadowcourt If I may ask, what have you done before HEMA? What was your foundation to build upon?
Thank you! There's one Ensifer and two Pavel Moc Fechtschwerts, with PMFs being used almost all the time
In my opinion seeking the bind was only a way to get the enemy on the ground to make quick work of him and then move on to the next, no time for posturing and elegance. I love this video and share with all my friends! You guys are AWESOME!
Very cool, I'm going to have to watch this lots of times to absorb everything.
I must also add that I found the music awfully distracting.
Very nice, you made my day today. just continue... you know.... train hard, go pro :)
thank you very much, much appreciated!
really cool but i hate this kind of editing.
you guys really fight with intent, great energy!!
As always, I love the intent, speed & power.
hmm?
thanks!
wonderful!
Well done as usual gents.
thank you!
awesome wiggling!
Awesome again.
To sídliště je prostě nejlepší :)
amazing!
if you watch closely, you can tell when one guy is letting the other guy hit him because he just ducks his head and does nothing with his sword. It's like one guy just gives up. One must never submit like so in a fight, lest he be struck down in vain!
As the great master wrote: "Do not rely too much on the Crown: you will tend to get scorn and shame from it, and never ever duck your head while doing nothing with your sword" -Liechtenauer
