This is true for most people. It's worse with Apple because the fee is $99 *every year* and you need to buy a Mac which can be upwards $1500, so it's definitely loss-making for sure.
Great honest video, I published my first paid app just over a month ago. It took me 3 months to make and Ive spent around 80 nzd on marketing it. So far sitting at 55 downloads and $92 nzd revenue. I'm happy with that but for the time and money put in it's a massively low return :( I figure as long as I'm enjoying the development process, it's fine but for anyone thinking it's a get rich scheme it's definitely not.
So I made the math.... (well, thanks Google!). 80 nzd is $50US. Well, the most important part is that you made a return in investment but the biggest return is also what you have learned because this can be priceless to an employer in the future who needs help to build his dream! I know only less than 1% of apps make it to the front page (like Flappy Birds and such!). Still believe in what you do and code with passion! PS: I made $0 on my app! Oh wait.. free and no ads... that's maybe why! @AdrienVillez
Totally agree marketing plays a huge part in the app success, thanks for video. Now working on my first app project with a 3rd party developer, besides Marketing, i do find trying to understand on how best to design the app backend/data flow design for my app challenging..
You said exactly what I was thinking. I would like to make an app to help people; something I would use myself. It's not about the money at all. The reason I'm watching this video is because I don't know how to code, and you're right when you say the first few apps or more will most likely be crap, so I'm looking to pay a developer... would you be interested?
Hello, we don't provide app development services. CodeWithChris is an educational channel. We would recommend going to Upwork.com, Fiverr, or codementor.io where you can hire freelance iOS developers. Good luck! - Kat
there one thing i want to add to your explanation is if we could not sell app in appstore we can sell the sources for others like companies or people who maybe like our app and also have plan for sell it.. thank u for videos that you make perfectly like always ..
I think a good product will sell period if you can reach the audience. Most of the time when people say i cant make money and ive made many apps i only wonder what kind of apps they made and what thier skill level is.you gotta be able to make something good
Wow This ir really helpful I have question How can I connect my back account with my app ?? It's like how I install my bank account with my app that I have developed?? Bcoz in my country is a lack of using Master Card and VISA Card. I will apreciate your answer .
Multiple payment services have an API like Stripe, Square, etc.. I even read yesterday that Visa will offer developers a way to directly connect the card system to their app! You also have Paypal, Apple Pay, etc.... @AdrienVillez
I would say his right only if your working alone but with a team of individuals with specific required skills such as programming , marketing/business management and graphic designing etc you good to go and these individuals don't have to be established just determined. Teamwork baba
Very good, like a website/product, an App is not a business, it can be part of a business but it isn't a business itself, as others have mentioned marketing is key in areas like this.
I don't see too much overhead on having the marketing part down. You dont need to be a "marketing master", just segmentate your target correctly when paying for Google Ads: you don't need to be too clever either to know which is your target. If you dont get downloads is because Google Ads system is bad at its own job and not showing the add to the relevant target (or the content of the add is not engaging enough to trigger the download). Am I missing something?
Hi...you still did not answer the question... How does the money come? Is it by people downloading the app or does the App store pay you for your app? How does the money come?
hello, now that your video is 7 years of age let me ask you your updated opinion please: i got experience with desktop game dev. however i got an idea for a game app, i have access to a desktop engine that i could port. however im afraid that without a gigantic marketing budget i wont make a dime. what would be your take on that? should i go to any cutthroat publishser or try to market it myself. or give up the idea after all. if chances are too slim whats the point. some established studio would copy the concept anyways and earn my bucks. from what ive heard the phone environment has a coportate monopoly as of right now. quite demotivating-
Did you not make anything at all with magic hat? Have you since tried to market it better and see if that makes a difference?? Surely you should try it may make all the difference?
Hello, i believe marketing the app would generate users but it is not my priority at the moment. Don't worry though as even just simple apps can earn a lot its just a matter of finding your "niche", it doesn't even have to be in-app purchases as ads can be plenty if it gets popular enough. Hope you well in your endevours as an app developer :) - Francis
Thats some good info, If your app is good and your marketing strategy also is on point you defo make money I would say, just a matter of time and patience and depends what the app is about.

Hi Chris what are the ways one can make money from an App? Is getting their email critical to get higher revenue? what is a good Ads platform? My App is in education and thank you for answering my questions. Thank you for the video
I'm trying to build my first app on my own.. I'm downloading online books about android, java and Xcode...at the national library.. I understand them very well because I've a financial and scientific professional background... I'm not a software developer, and I don't have any clue about programming .. But as You said, it is really hard.. but I will try to keep going until I have it... I'm trying to settle a problem in the soccer sector in my country. I hope I can solve it with the app that I'm currently building. And yes, unfortunately I'm doing it for the money.... Thanks for the video 🙂
If making money is what you are after, app development isn't it unless you work for a company. The vast majority if apps will not make a dime. One big reason why is because people think apps are cheap to make, so they value them at $0. Honestly if I knew it was this hard to make money out of, I wouldn't learn it. Not worth it.
LiLi†h LaVey hey Chris have some tutorial videos of how to create an app. But is better if you take his courses because he will teach you the rite way.. I learned a lot from his tutorial videos but I don’t know how to put it out there.
hi! do you have a video or could you please tell me if you want to build an app just by paying an app development company to make it, how much would it cost to make it. (good apps such as pokemon go, clash of clans, candy crash etc. how much would it cost ?)
I am trying to make an app because I have an idea that is'nt out their and I would really like to use the idea. Don't really care about the money but it would be cool if I could eventually make some. Who knows
Hello Chris I don't know anything about about I was searching how i can make money on apps online before I saw your video and I was really motivated so my question is how do I start to make money from apps
I'm very familiar with software development, just not phone apps and need to learn another programming language. Not a big deal. I have a need for an app myself, so thats motivation enough. I will probably spend a lot of time tweaking it and adding features till is is perfect for me. At that point some folks around me should be using it too. Then it could go to the apps store. Any money it makes would be nice, but not required. I'd be sad if it makes less than the costs of setting it up.
Initial investment, without counting your own time and work would be $99/year. I still believe that the self reward, that feeling of successfully publish an app you wrote by yourself is definitely worth the $99/y. @AdrienVillez
Hi Chris, what learning path would you recommend to someone without coding experience to be able to make and app? ( purely for learning experience only besides earning money)

Hi, Chris, thank you very much for this video, I also watched your video on making an app icon, they are all very good. I started learning programming and making mobile App as a complete beginner (My official education is finance and accounting), and currently I am trying to make my first app, I don't expect it to make money because I know the reality, but I sometimes question my career path as a beginner app developer. If making App is hard to make money, then I will have to look for a job, and it's hard to find first job without official education and related working experience too. Do you have any suggestions for someone as a beginner, without CS or engineer degree, only learning online? Thank you!
Hello! Best to just practice and practice and build a portfolio that you can showcase your programming skills to potential employers. What you can produce/create is more important than the degree (or lack thereof) that you earned. So go ahead and finish that app... it will show future employers that you are serious and determined enough to make a career out of programming. All the best! :-) -Arthur
Thanks for your videos. I just started learning and even though It has been slow, I am still motivated. I would like to build a game app, do you have any advice?
Slow is still faster than not doing anything! Regarding games, it will come with time. You won't be able to build game if you did not grasp the essential. Get the basics strong, know how to use iOS and UIKit then you can start to see the math and logic behind 2D and 3D games. -Adrien
@@CodeWithChris Hey this was so helpful, man! Got a question... Does this mean that one needs to make the app creation a sort of continuous thing (to master the essentials)? I'm thinking of finding a neat developer and partnering with them as I fund. Kindly advise on this it will make my day.
Can I build a app with google and give it to someone but they will be the one getting pay for the app I make? It would be given to them and not be on my Dev plateform?
Hello Chris, i want to create my first app( for money) but i dont know how to do it. I am passionate about games, an app line watsapp or instagram and others. Can you please give me some ideas ? Thank you
Do go in app development for money (first). If you want money, become a developer and find a job, let the client pay you! Now if you have a passion about something and want to transfer that passion into an app that could help you and others, please make it!!!! In the future add paid features or add ads. Money will come if the app get traction! -Adrien

nice vid, thanks for no BS approach. I'm not really interested in coding, but knowing enough about coding to not get taken advantage off while trying to build my idea. How is your management experience with "coders?" and coding companies? How would you suggest a business manager go about hiring a developer, or even just an IT guy as an example. Thanks
Maybe you should consider a web app or website. Building a macOS app for something a website (and is online) can do, is a waste of resources and time. Check out the python programming language and even Flutter maybe. @AdrienVillez

Good luck!

its at least motivation for building an app

I think a good product will sell period if you can reach the audience. Most of the time when people say i cant make money and ive made many apps i only wonder what kind of apps they made and what thier skill level is.you gotta be able to make something good
Yes!!!! If an app serves a purpose, it will be used!
@AdrienVillez
I am a member of a community and I think an app to share information and business among the community members is a good idea
Wow
This ir really helpful
I have question
How can I connect my back account with my app ??
It's like how I install my bank account with my app that I have developed??
Bcoz in my country is a lack of using Master Card and VISA Card.
I will apreciate your answer .
Multiple payment services have an API like Stripe, Square, etc.. I even read yesterday that Visa will offer developers a way to directly connect the card system to their app! You also have Paypal, Apple Pay, etc....
@AdrienVillez
I would say his right only if your working alone but with a team of individuals with specific required skills such as programming , marketing/business management and graphic designing etc you good to go and these individuals don't have to be established just determined. Teamwork baba
but conventional work is trash. Make money by yourself is the best if it works
Very good, like a website/product, an App is not a business, it can be part of a business but it isn't a business itself, as others have mentioned marketing is key in areas like this.
You got that right! Thanks for watching! - Pat
Thanks for sharing! - Pat
Hi...you still did not answer the question... How does the money come? Is it by people downloading the app or does the App store pay you for your app? How does the money come?
hello, now that your video is 7 years of age let me ask you your updated opinion please: i got experience with desktop game dev. however i got an idea for a game app, i have access to a desktop engine that i could port. however im afraid that without a gigantic marketing budget i wont make a dime.
what would be your take on that? should i go to any cutthroat publishser or try to market it myself. or give up the idea after all. if chances are too slim whats the point. some established studio would copy the concept anyways and earn my bucks. from what ive heard the phone environment has a coportate monopoly as of right now. quite demotivating-
Hey, I was wondering what software you used to make that magic hat app
Did you not make anything at all with magic hat? Have you since tried to market it better and see if that makes a difference?? Surely you should try it may make all the difference?
Hello, i believe marketing the app would generate users but it is not my priority at the moment. Don't worry though as even just simple apps can earn a lot its just a matter of finding your "niche", it doesn't even have to be in-app purchases as ads can be plenty if it gets popular enough. Hope you well in your endevours as an app developer :)
- Francis
Thats some good info, If your app is good and your marketing strategy also is on point you defo make money I would say, just a matter of time and patience and depends what the app is about.
True! 👍 Thanks for watching!

@AdrienVillez
If making money is what you are after, app development isn't it unless you work for a company. The vast majority if apps will not make a dime. One big reason why is because people think apps are cheap to make, so they value them at $0. Honestly if I knew it was this hard to make money out of, I wouldn't learn it. Not worth it.
Chris i wanna build apps to make money. But I need to take your course, and I need to also know how to get it out there.

Hello Chris I don't know anything about about I was searching how i can make money on apps online before I saw your video and I was really motivated so my question is how do I start to make money from apps
I love how everyone is saying "I don't do it for money", don't waste your time making apps.
Thanks for sharing! -Arthur
@AdrienVillez

:-) -Arthur
How can I have my own app
Thanks for your videos. I just started learning and even though It has been slow, I am still motivated. I would like to build a game app, do you have any advice?
Slow is still faster than not doing anything! Regarding games, it will come with time. You won't be able to build game if you did not grasp the essential. Get the basics strong, know how to use iOS and UIKit then you can start to see the math and logic behind 2D and 3D games.

@@CodeWithChris Hey this was so helpful, man! Got a question... Does this mean that one needs to make the app creation a sort of continuous thing (to master the essentials)? I'm thinking of finding a neat developer and partnering with them as I fund. Kindly advise on this it will make my day.

To promote your paid app. Just create more than one app and make free and paid apps
You dont even have to be a developer to get into the app business. Youre better off paying someone else to create your app and learn the marketing yourself.
