I'm 47 years old and I've used the spin clean alone for many years but what I found that works the best for me is using a handy miracle called a Vinyl Vac first to suck out the dirt then use the Spin Clean and then Vinyl vac it one more time and then use the Anti static gun. The results have been remarkable. I do this for new albums before playing them and there are no pops in the records. Many of my albums I've had since the 1980s that I took care of and did not scratch now sound even better than they ever have before! Give this cleaning process a try. It takes a single play through to get rid of any surface residue noise out from a wet clean but on the second play and after will sound very nice. I use a junk suitcase record player to use as a base when using the Vinyl Vac. It's made a big difference and helped get old stubborn dirt that caused pops out of the grooves. I swear it's made my listening to albums so much more enjoyable. I love my records even more now. Many of my albums play through with no pops at all now. My friends and family who come over say ..That's a record? It sounds great!

Good review. One thing that's seldom mentioned, and one of the HumminGuru's better points, is the smaller amount of water that it uses compared to other ultrasonics. That makes it practical to change the water more often, and should result in better and safer cleaning,
There's a lot of discussion on the Hoffman forums about the 'Guru, and they seem to be mostly favorable. Most people though, feel the addition of a surficant and/or cleaner is usually necessary,

I bought a big ultrasonic cleaner on Alibaba, wired an old turntable motor from a junk table, and had a buddy 3d print a record holder. All in cost me about $120. It doesn't dry, but I just use microfiber towels. You absolutely need to use some kind of surfactant.

I did the same thing. Added a large gear and belt to slow the RPM. I use rubber feet from junk turntables to hold and space records. I have never ruined a lable with the fluid. I use dawn dish soap and isopropyl alcohol, filtered water.

It looks a nice of kit and it was lovely of Chris to send you one. I watched a similar demo recently by Techmoan and looks like it does a good job.. although a little pricey for me. I will stick with my spin clean for now, especially as the RSD 2022 list is out !!!! keep on spinnin !!

I really like the concept of the ultra sonic cleaners, but I find my spin clean to be so relaxing. To bring in a new box of yardsale records, and to clean them as I play them just makes my day.

I use the spin clean and then play on my junk table, if worthy, I will ultrasonic them. Difference truely is night and day. Spin clean is junk vs ultrasonic.

This one of the more fair reviews I've seen on this product. So many folks comparing it directly to a Degritter is silly to me based on price difference. I love mine and like you said, use it for either new or moderately dirty records. I'm not someone who digs at thrifts for stuff so don't really ever encounter really trashed records.

Good informative episode Frank. Coincidently I found a used copy of Synchronicity in Owen Sound Ontario this weekend...and the store owner mentioned the purple color vinyl...wonder if he is a Friday Night viewer. I picked up about a dozen records and spent this afternoon manually cleaning them in my Spinmaster. Quite frankly I find it therapeutic and can't see myself investing in anything else...and it's quiet so I can listen while I clean 😉

I am a huge fan of your channel, and I am also a big fan of vinyl. In fact, I own more than 1,000 records. All of that is to indicate that my thoughts are from a loving fan, and not from someone who wants to be a jerk.
While watching this video, I kept thinking that if I was on the fence about vinyl, then I would be intimidated by the thought that enjoying it involves so much effort. If I own CDs (or even cassettes), I do not have to go through so much effort to maintain their sound quality, and digital is even less worrisome. So I would love to see a video (assuming I did not miss an existing one) on why vinyl is worth the extra effort.
Thanks again for everything you do on this channel. Whenever I see a new video from you, I am anxious to watch it! 🙂

Totally agree. The HummingGuru does a very good "finishing" job but you do need to do a "traditional" wet clean before and use a surfactant. Sound too much work? Well yes but it does work well and it sensibly improves the "traditional" cleaning.

I was an early backer on this. I usually go through a mechanical cleaning, then follow up with Humminguru. Like you, I add photoflo. I see a large improvement with the drying cycle by using this. Overall, I think this is an incredible option for cleaning records.

I got a Record Dr IV and purchased with credit card rewards....it was on sale for $199. So far, I think it does a great job. The proof is when you go and clean your stylus after playing an LP previously cleaned on the Record Dr....NO crud!. So to me, this is all you need. One note, I use Audiointelligence #6 fluid with mine, great stuff! The Record Dr can me improved upon cheaply by adding the KabUSA replacement bearing. It is larger diameter than the one that comes stock. This makes for a much smoother and stable rotation of the record. For dry cleaning, I recommend the Audioquest carbon fiber brush, the one with the gold inserts on handle.

I was very interested in the Degritter or HumminGuru as they a great all in one, simple record cleaning/drying option. My issue is I often buy several records at once and I wanted a solution that can take care of them all at once.
I ended up getting the iSonic ultrasonic cleaner in December as it allows me to clean 10 records at once. I ended up using a fan to dry the records after the ultrasonic process. Isonic says they are working on a drying add on to that unit so I look forward to that.
I previously used a VPI 16.5 record vacuum machine and I find the ultrasonic cleaning process works at least as good as the VPI if not a little better.
I plan on making a video similar to yours about my cleaner soon.
    Great video thank you!

I’ve created my own ultrasonic hack using a small medical vibrator I was given by my occupational therapist to stimulate the nerves in a finger I severed a couple years back. The vibrator fits nicely wedged underneath the Vinyl styl washer and when turned on I believe the waves created help to loosen debris from the grooves. Definitely see a difference in the water. One more hack: just started using 7th gen all purpose cleaner free and clear followed by distilled water for a quick surface clean on albums. No alcohol no ammonia. Plant based. Thoroughly dry of course. Using as substitute to those expensive record cleaners out there that don’t list the ingredients.

Hey Frank! My name is Tyler and I have learned so much from your channel when I first started acquiring records you have pretty much taught me all there is to know about record care and music, I have a question, lately I’ve been asking myself why do I like records and record gear? every time I purchase a new record they are always warped scratched or scuffed or it doesn’t fit my turntable the whole is too tight, it’s a hate love thing, I love records so much because I own the music and there’s some thing about cleaning it and playing records but I also hate it because most records are damaged and scratched even the new expensive ones, also there’s a lot of music out there that I really want on vinyl that I can’t get and I’ll never be able to get, Because no one is pressing them anymore and people that have them are selling them for way too much money, And who knows those are probably damaged as well! Any advice on these issues, sometimes I ask myself why do I keep buying records when they’re always damaged? Then I have trouble trying to return it to get a new one and then that one’s damaged. And why is everything so expensive? I want to get the Fluance Rt85 but then I ask myself why do I want to get this beautiful expensive turntable with an expensive cartridge when the records themselves Even the new ones or damaged is it worth it? Thanks Frank I hope to hear from you.

I was fairly harsh in my initial HumminGuru reviews… 3-months later I’ve grown to appreciate it “more.”
    1) it MUST have some sort of “solution/surfactant” added. HumminGuru pretty much endorses the use of Groovewasher G-sonic solution (per the HG created Facebook group). Though I use G2
    2) it isn’t a 10-min or less one per deal, as I had hoped. IMO, it’s 20-minutes per record and batch cleaning makes more sense, kinda deal.
    Couple of my thoughts, anywhoos.

I am a bit sceptical about automatic record cleaning machines. That is why i use the Nitty Gritty manual vacuum cleaning machine. First i remove visible dirt and dust from the record. Next i put the record on a work turntable and apply a power cleaner to remove mold from the record I scrub this liquid a few revolutions to get it all over the record Then i apply record cleaning fluid and rotate the record while using a brush. I spray the side of the record with distilled water to remove the cleaning fluid Then the record goes on the vacuum machine. I rotate the record a few times to make sure it is dry. After it is dry i apply record preservative to the record which hardens the vinyl to a depth of a few microns...............Then i repeat the process to the other side of the record. It may seem like a lot of work, but the result is worth it.

Don't retire the Spin Clean just yet. I still use mine on really dirty records as a pre-clean prior to putting into the ultrasonic. Recently cleaned all of my Mom's neglected records, wanted to see how much of a difference was between using just ultrasonic, just Spin-Clean, and both. Again, very neglected records. Using both made a HUGE difference. It is now part of my cleaning process for bin dives/yard sale/thrift store finds.

I use a surfactant called Tergikleen with mine. Add 17 drops of Tergikleen to a gallon of distilled water. But an extra water tank. First add the Tergikleen/distilled water mix to the first water tank, run record in machine thru wash and dry. Then grab other water tank and only put distilled water by itself in it. Run record in machine thru wash and dry. Now u have a clean record. Sometimes it will leave some drops of water. Take a clean dry towel and wipe the drops. Amazed at how much Tergikleen added to distilled water cleans records with this machine!

I got this early in their Kickstarter campaign so got it at a slightly better price. I found out that the Led Zeppelin remasters from 2014-2015, as well as the Pink Floyd ones from 2016, which I cleaned up several times with the SpinClean but still remained a bit noisy. After putting them thru the HumminGuru the results were pretty amazing and that remaining surface noise was mostly gone. So I'll be keeping both as I find they complement each other. As prices go for ultrasonic cleaners this is definitely on the cheaper side. We'll have to see how long it lasts of course.

Cleaning new vinyl is just as important as used. There is a chemical preservative in the grooves left over from the pressing plant that shrouds the sound a bit. I've proven it by comparing digital captures before and after U/S cleaning... frequency response improves around 1db above 2khz or so.

  • @Albee213

I might give one of these a try. I purchased an ultrasonic LP cleaner kit from Amazon for about $300. It cleans 7 LPs at a time however its bulky and does not dry them. I have used Spin Cleaners contraptions and other home remedies and NOTHING comes close to getting LPs as clean as my ultrasonic cleaner. I have used a spin clean on very dirty LPs and at first glance they look clean, however you hold them to the light and they are still tinted brown from the dirt in the grooves. I run a filthy used thrift store LP through my machine and it looks brand new. I used distilled water and a splash of Isopropyl Alcohol.

I got one a few months back and I am totally satisfied with it. There are better cleaners for $2K-$16K but I'm not spending that much on a cleaner. This is right at my limit so I took the plunge. I've been cleaning my older records with a surfactant and new records with distilled water only. The results have been better than this pessimist thought they would be. It's still a bit expensive but definitely worth it.

Good video, Frank. I often think that the Spin Clean (and a dozen microfiber cloths) has been the best contributor to my record collecting hobby over the years. I did see the Kickstarter for the HG when it came out, and have watched several reviews, but haven't been convinced that it will provide me with a USD $500 benefit. Clean and static-free records sound great so I don't really have a problem in need of a five hundred dollar solution. I've I were to splash that kinda cash, I think I'd get more sonic benefit from an upgraded cartridge. To each their own; if I were you, I'd keep the Spin Clean for an initial friction-based cleaning of really dirty records, then top it off with the HG.
    Cheers! Tom

I read some of your comments on this article. There's always going to be pluses and minuses to everything. Since it's a bit out of most people's price range why not review other methods for cleaning records? I've been thinking about getting either one of a Squeaky Clean Record Cleaner or a Vinyl Bug. I've had a Klaudio for about 3 years. I love it and the surface noise and pops and
clicks clean up remarkably well. If the record is pressed onto poor quality
vinyl or the record has been played with a bad needle, it can only do so much
but generally, it’s a miracle worker. I keep my record shelves and the Klaudio
in a separate room from the turntable. That sucker is loud - especially the vacuuming

I got myself an ultrasonic tub off of eBay for 100 AUD and rigged up a cymbal stand to hold the record. Yeah I have to sit there spinning it by hand for 10 or 15 minutes, but it does a great job for a fraction of the price.
I use a mix of distilled water, ilford ilfotol surfactant, and isopropyl alcohol.
It saved a used copy of Electric Ladyland that was unplayable due to gunk deep in the groove.
The ultrasonic is something I hardly use though. It's there for emergencies. For records that have deep grime and crud in the grooves that the Spin Clean or hand-washing can't reach.

Question. I've always found that no matter how I clean a record, be it with lots of soap and water, a light wipe-down with a soft cloth and warm water or taking it to my not-so-local professional with a RCM, the first few plays after cleaning are extremely noisy. The noise is drastically reduced after play number one, and by play number four or five it becomes better than it was before cleaning. I assume this has something to do with water droplets and deposits being loosened up and pushed down into the grooves which then have to be dug out by the stylus. With this machine, do you find that the improvements to noise levels are immediate, or do your records actually sound worse for the first few plays before the benefits kick in?

  • @helgar791
    @helgar791 2 роки тому +4

When cleaning a dirty record with ultrasonic cleaners it's good to clean off as much dust and dirt as you can before using the cleaner. You really don't want that dirt and grime in the water bouncing against your records. It's good to compare a record cleaned with your other methods. Play them, clean them with the ultrasonic, then play again. No matter what is said, surfactants are important. Yes, multiple cleanings help, but only after a few, then you won't get better results. I used Photoflo with my old VPI for many years. The AudioDesk I use sells their own surfactant.

what frequency does it agitate the water at?
surfactants leave a trace behind it's not necessarily bad thing but I'd only use it in the rinse!
use a bit of soap for washing your car without the wax 4 drops
and it is hard to remove surfactant as well.
5% of isopropanol would be good as well.
best manual cleaner is the disco antistat 55$ probably as good as a sonic cleaner, and the way you clean on a manual is important don't just take one revolution in one direction but go forward and backwards three or 4 times before doing one revolution.

Ultrasonic cleaners work much better with hot water. Try filling the tank with some water that’s about 50°C. Another thing to dry is there a few drops of surfactant. But if you add surfactant, then you have to rinse. Try warmer water and see if that helps first

hi. The Humming Guru demo was interesting. I've already forgotten, but what method does The hummer use to dry? I'm guessing it's not heat based. (please excuse my ignorance as I am not the vinyl collector; my brother is. I only collect First press complete KISS albums) The spin king looks quite simple. Do you just place record in and manually spin it? Lastly, are there other methods that clean better than Guru? Thanks for your time. Good Show! \m/

Nice video and honest review. I have seen mixed reviews on it. The issue for me is I am not patient enough to wait for a record to clean 2 or 3 times at 5 minutes. I am more old school using the GrooveWasher etc.. But the question to you is this was sent to you by a viewer. However, personally would you have gone out and spent the $400.00 for it yourself?

    1. What is the Htz used... is it 40htz or 120htz or other?
    2. Not a Question: I hear at the Smithsonian they use surfactants but rinse it off the records as they can COLOR the sound when dry.

  • @junkyardvinyl4811
    @junkyardvinyl4811 2 роки тому

Two things. Don’t get rid of your spin clean (will make sense as you read on). I’ve been using Ultrasonic (US) cleaning for at least 10 years and feel I can offer some insight from my experiences. The biggest issue with these self enclosed US cleaners is the rotational speed. It seems all these cleaners, Kirmass, Degritter, Autodek, Hummingbird, want to rotate the record too fast. Per some US manufacturer white papers the time needed to clean a surface is a minimum of 3 - 5 minutes for full effectiveness. A record has one third of its surface immersed at any point so to clean a record it needs a 9 -15 minute cycle to complete cleaning. The surface needs to be immersed completely during the mentioned time frame not in for 10 - 30 seconds rotated out then the back in for another dip till the total adds up to the 3 - 5 minutes total used by most of the mentioned cleaners. Hence the rotational speed needs to be at a minimum 1/10th rotation per hour RPH. Yup, that slow. This is one reason you are having to cycle your records several times. There are other factors that play in such as the US frequency and cleaning formulas but lets leave that for now.
The drying sequence is what’s causing the static. The blowing action of the fan is the culprit. Typically records left to air dry after a US cleaning are very quiet upon play.
As mentioned don’t retire your spin clean because as good as US cleaning is you will find records that will need several methods of cleaning before finishing off in the US cleaner. If all you are buying new or VG++ then no problem but if you are buying from thrift shops, estate sales and elsewhere you will need other cleaners to remove the peanut butter and jelly sandwich remains or worse!

Yes, $400 is a lot cheaper then other solutions. However, for that price I shouldn't have to run it through 3 times (30 minutes) and still hear some noise. I'm sure that you can get the same results with the spin clean in a lot less time, minus the drying time

Ultrasonic cleans better than any spin clean system , maybe this particular model is faulty ? I clean my records for no more than 5-8 minutes in my ultrasonic cleaner . The difference is night and day especially with older records . I wouldn't recommend running it through for 30 minutes as ultrasonic may damage records " not proven but some people say it can eat away certain softer plastics .
Also a 100% clean pop free old record is a near impossible feat .

Surface noise is a “feature” and an unfortunate downside to vinyl and a result of the pressing process and the materials used in making records. No cleaning no matter how good it does can get rid of the surface noise that is a result of this process. If it’s “baked” in to the pressing it’s never going away.

Nothing beats ultrasonic cleaning. It even beats out the expensive vacuum record cleaners. For very dirty records, it is best to preclean before using an ultrasonic cleaner. For about the same amount of money, one can make their own ultrasonic cleaner which can clean multiple records at a time. Do a Google search. However, it would not dry the lps like this model.
