The story behind Riker's unique way of sitting in a chair comes from a real life back injury that Frakes suffered long ago when he was moving furniture for a living at the time. It also explains the leaning he does when standing. He can only stand for a short period of time, but if he has to stand much longer then he leans to the side to take some pressure off of his back, and therefore sitting down normally is uncomfortable for him, hence the legendary Riker Manoeuvre. Having suffered a back injury myself in grade school after a bully buried his knee in my spine because I stopped him from beating up a good friend, I can relate to the back pain.
When I watch frakes doing conventions with Marina sirtis, I noticed that if the convention is long and he's been sitting awhile, Marina will start rubbing his back. I think it goes to show that when the actors on tng say they were all really close friends, it's true..she knows him so well she knows when he starts to get uncomfortable sitting in the chair for so long. That back injury must have been a really bad one to bother him for so long
Some of the questions he asked her soon thereafter included: "Ever gone mountain biking?" "Do you have a pet?" "Do you have a sweet-tooth?" "Have you ever visited a china-town section in a major city?" "How superstitious are you?"
