the last jazz master! The last evidence that Bud, Bird and Dizzy did exist! Thank you master for all the magic and light to a musically illiterate. Thank you so much for posting this, one more haven for me to hold on to!
Lets give a nod to Marian McPartland who passed back in 2013, a UK born jazz pianist. She could cut the mustard, even though she did not become famous in the world of jazz. You can tell Barry Harris has respect for her, and she for him. Thanks to You Tube, we can see footage of both.
I only wished I saw her play in Jazz Alley when I lived in Seattle, too young to appreciate history as it happens, saw it advertised, as long as many other giants I missed. I had a chance to a few.
01:34 "It Could Happen To You" (Burke, Van Heusen) 05:03 "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" (Scriven, Converse) 08:43 "Prelude To A Kiss" (Ellington) 18:41 "Just You, Just Me" (Greer, Klages) [Duet] 24:09 "Body And Soul" (Heyman, Green) [Played by Marian] 32:25 "East Of The Sun" (Bowman) [Duet] 39:48 "A Time For Love" (Mandel, Webster) 46:09 "In The Blue Of Evening" (Adair, D'Artega) [Played by Marian] 51:58 "Au Privave" (Parker) [Duet]
Could have, but they come from very different perspectives. Marilyn had a very subtle free swing fighting against straight bebop of Barry.. they needed to play together a while to meld as they are so different.
"What A Friend We Have In Jesus" was written by Joseph Scriven and Charles Converse. I hope you know him as Saviour. "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved." (Acts 16:31)
Piano jazz was one of the BEST series ever on NPR.
Agreed!!
Yesss. For me, it was for my ears and brain, and soul, similar to watching Bob Ross paint a picture. Loved her program.
That magic sound ❤
Body and Soul by Marianne was sublime, probably the best I ever heard she played.
Man, this is a magic!

RIP the best to ever do it
57 minutes of joy. Where can we find more recordings of the Piano Jazz program? Is there an official archive?
When Barry plays something he always says:” I say” not “I play”

Anyone know what kind piano Marilyn McPartland played?
Baldwin supplied the pianos if I remember correctly.
She mentions Baldwin in this video, listen from 29:50 on

Pure genius Barry wow what a sound, check out Jazz Skills, Shan studied with him.

Is it just me or does Barry steal the legato and fluidity out of Marilyn's playing
