      To me, the big shock is a music reactor specifically. PTX is one of the go-tos for music reactors.
      Years ago (and still with a lot of older videos) they never got copyright claimed. Their current label claims like crazy though. He may get lucky with this reaction though because these are old songs with a lot of different copyright holders. Their label may police it less.

    I think you'd love their 2014 Grammy-winner, Daft Punk medley. They got their start in a 2011 a capella contest show called the Sing-Off, where the three friends Scott Hoying (baritone), Kirstin Maldonado (mezzo soprano, but more alto in recent years), and Mitch Grassi (tenor/countertenor), who had sung together in as The Trio in high school, were joined by beatboxer/cellist Kevin Olusola and bass Avi Kaplan (replaced in late 2016 by Matt Sallee, whom you saw in this video - the only personnel change in 10 years). Spoiler: they won the contest. But the recording contract they were promised as part of the prize fell through because the company didn't think it could market them. They took to UA-cam and other social media platforms, making videos non-stop and then touring relentlessly. Their catalog is rich and deep, evolving from mostly covers and medleys to a number of original songs now.

    Welcome to the world of Pentatonix, or PTX for short. Get ready for a quick boost to your channel from their rabid fans who call ourselves “Pentaholics”. Here is my quick intro to the group for new fans.
    PTX is a five member “a Capella” (without instruments) vocal band formed in 2011 for the NBC television reality competition show “The Sing Off”. The original members are “the trio”, who went to high school together in Arlington, Texas made up of:
    SCOTT HOYING, male, 6’3”, usually blond, sings baritone, but has a wide vocal range and covers the bass line of songs when the normal bass is singing a lead.
    MITCH GRASSI, male, 5’10”, normally black hair but has changed body mass, wardrobe and hair style so much in videos he’s often mistaken for different people. Mitch has an amazingly high range (contra tenor) that some mistake for a second female voice.
    KIRSTIN MALDONADO, female, 5’4”, natural hair color is black but changes it often in videos. Kirsti (rhymes with “thirsty”) sings mezzo soprano and, for a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”.
    Added to “the trio” for the show were:
    AVI KAPLAN, male, 5’11”, long dark hair, beard, usually wears a knit hat of some kind. Avi is a classically trained “basso profundo”. He provides the vocal bass line as well as added vocal percussion but often uses his upper registry to sing vocal leads in a number of arrangements. Avi is the ONLY member of the band that has change. He left on good terms in 2017 for reasons related to conflicting demands of the band’s touring schedule and his personal/family commitments. He assisted the group in finding his replacement Matt Sallee.
    KEVIN OLUSOLA male, 6’1”, black, changing hair style, is known as “KO” and was asked to join PTX to provide vocal percussion after Scott watched a UA-cam video of him “cello boxing” (beatboxing while playing his cello). KO is the classic over achiever of the group. He plays Cello, Piano, and Saxophone all at concert levels. He graduated pre-med from Yale, speaks Spanish and spent over a year in China where he became fluent in Chinese. He sings Tenor but vocals were not his strong suite when he started so he worked with other band members and a vocal coach until while on tour he would perform the featured vocals in "if I ever fall in love", (originally performed by guest artist Jason Derulo for the album and video). He also writes and produces music both individually and for the group. So, KO is more than “just the beatboxer”.
    The most recent member and the only change in the group’s membership is:
    MATT SALLEE, male, 5’9” black with usually close-cut black hair. Matt replaced Avi Kaplan in 2017 to provide vocals, vocal bass and percussion. Matt can be heard using his exceptional upper vocal range to provide a rich tenor/baritone lead often ending with a slide down to a deep bass punch.
    Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches!
    1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. The only exception is they may deliberately use Auto-Tune when they cover songs where it was used in the original and is key to the sound of that song. An example is "90's Dance Medley" when they use it in Cher’s, “Believe”.
    2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen.
    Enjoy the ride.

      Better than my last attempt at an intro. One small issue I have is that Mitch is a sopranist, not just a contratenor. Of course, all of them have larger ranges than can be described by one range term, he even drops into baritone when necessary (the higher end, at least). Still a fine intro :)

    Welcome to Pentatonix! Thank you for your reaction. Their name comes from referring to the pentatonic scale something to do with the number 5. They were a trio, Scott the baritone (wearing the yellow jacket and funky glasses), Kirsten the only girl/woman and Mitch. He is a counter tenor which allows some really high notes as well as a lower register. They knew each other as young kids and in high school used to sing together. In Scott’s 1st year of college he heard about a TV show that would feature a capella groups. He called Kirsten and Mitch but they also needed a bass and percussion to fill out the group. The 1st bass they met and he fit right in his name is Avi and Kevin was discovered on the Internet playing the cello and beatboxing. He was contacted and agreed to be a part of the group. They only had a few days together to practice before going on the show (called the Sing Off). I believe it was the 3rd season which they won. Their videos are still on You Tube. This was back in 2011 when Scott, Kirsty and Mitch were ALL 19 years old!

    Considering your expressed interest in music genres and the transitions, you should watch the Daft Punk medley. The Grammy they won for that one was renamed to "Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Capella" from "Best Instrumental Arrangement" just so they could get the nomination. They won it again the following year for their arrangement of Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy. (Their third Grammy wasn't for arrangement, but was Best Country Group or Duo for their collaboration remaking "Jolene" with Dolly Parton.)
    As someone else already said, you would probably also enjoy their one-take live Evolution Of series of medleys. Other than that, maybe their original EDM Love Again. There is a huge catalog of videos by Pentatonix, but since you are enjoying the transitions so much, I would recommend their evolution videos. In random order: The Evolution of Michael Jackson, of Beyonce, of Music, and of Rihanna.
    Alto/Soprano(?) - Kirstin Maldonado
    Tenor (countertenor) - Mitch Grassi
    Baritone - Scott Hoying
    Bass - Matt Sallee (joined the group in 2017, so videos before that have Avi Kaplan.)

    They formed in 2011 and won season three of The Sing-Off.

    • @Bobal27
      @Bobal27 3 роки тому +4

      Kirstie is a mezzo soprano, and that range can dip down into tenor and nearly as high as soprano (without head range). Mitch dips into baritone, and tops out at sopranist, or male soprano, since head range is allowed for that category (though he hit an A5 in “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” and that may have been chest still. That’s only two whole steps below high C, the peak of soprano range!). Scott is Baritone/Tenor, Matt is Bass/Baritone. You nearly got Kevin, though, but I’m betting that “o” in his name was a typo, it’s right next to “i.”
      Good comment, great suggestions. I’m just trying to help you fill in some knowledge gaps :)

    • @Bobal27
      @Bobal27 3 роки тому +2

      @@catherineharger8069 Ok, thank you for the heads up. She gives herself too little credit, though. So modest. None of them have a one-label vocal range, though. They probably have a total of at least 18 octaves between the five current members, way more if you count head range and growls. My main concern is Mitch’s label, though, as there are only 14 famous sopranists on the list in Wikipedia, under sopranist. 2 of them count as true male sopranos, as they can use modal voice (high chest) in the soprano range. Mitch’s A5 in “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” was so clear, with good vibrato. That’s not to say you can’t vibrato in head range, I simply believe it was modal. If he can sing 3 half steps higher in his chest, he’s a true male soprano as well. The term sopranist allows for use of head range (falsetto), though, so he’s baritone through sopranist, but I’d push for male soprano. If you want to be as safe as possible with his range, I’d say “Baritone, Tenor, Sopranist,” since sopranist is technically a classification of countertenors that falsetto up to (and in Mitch’s case, past) soprano.
      I called Julliard, to see what they think of his range, and they thanked me for bringing their attention to “an interesting thought project.” I gave them my number, for when they have a result, but was quickly brushed off the line, so I have no expectation of receiving a definitive word on it. They did sound very intrigued, though, at the idea that there’s a new potential true male soprano on the scene, and told me I could safely call him a sopranist, for nailing an A5 either way in a song.
      As for Kirstie, I’m a singer, too, and if I know one thing about singers, we like to pick one label (that nobody can argue) and stick with it. I hated calling myself a baritone, since I can hit Avi notes (not as clear or resonant, though, his low notes in Daft Punk are right at the bottom of my range where I can sing it, but growl it clearer), but my voice coach insisted I was more of a baritone, for my powerful G4 (top end). I’m sure Kirstie is in a similar camp, and just says “alto,” since that’s her best range. There’s only 3 notes separating the top of alto from the top of soprano, though, and one’s a half step (E5, F5, G5, A5).
      Long story short (too late), Mitch is best in his high range, so if Kirstie calls herself an “alto,” then Mitch is a sopranist, if not a male soprano.

    • @minaolenella869
      @minaolenella869 3 роки тому +2

      @@Bobal27 for me it seams Mitch is typical altino leggero tenor, with an mixed leggiero extentsion c4- g5, and dark sounding lower register (if you can call a rare voice type typical). Michael Jackson had similar voice. Bigger problem with all those voice labels is that they are meant to describe possible roles in opera and not describe pop/modern singers.

  • @Bobal27
    @Bobal27 3 роки тому +44

    One of the best reactions I’ve seen to this. Calling Mitch a problem, I love it. You’re welcome :)
    As a DJ, your next one has to be their first Grammy, “Daft Punk” medley. You’ll really appreciate why it got the Grammy (for arrangement). The Grammys even changed the category so they could win it, it was previously “Best Arrangement, Instrumental.” Now it’s “Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Capella.”
    Oh, and the people calling Mitch a countertenor aren’t doing justice to his range. He goes from baritone to sopranist (male soprano, I found out recently that head range is included when determining a sopranist’s range), and even beyond that. He might be able to pull off some Mariah Carey whistle notes (extremely high and shrill) with practice. Tenor/countertenor is just the middle of his range.
    Btw, I’m glad you’re seeing some fast results with Pentatonix (you got it right first try, then kept changing it, lol). Weird Al won’t bring in the bigger numbers (yet), but there are good reasons I mentioned him, if you trust me. Just hold off on “Rap God” until after you’ve heard at least “Couch Potato” and “Hardware Store,” maybe even that whole album (since it did win a Grammy for “Best Comedy Album”). I guess I’ll go watch that “Rap $#!?” now, since you had such a fast turnaround on some PTX for us :)
    Oh, and don’t forget to please rewind about 5 seconds or so (10 is fine, too, since it’s a button) after a pause, you don’t want to miss anything :p

      @@gingerjohnson1095 I didn’t say just whistle notes, I know he does those. I said “Mariah Carey” whistle notes. I think the example I’m thinking about (where she goes, “Aah, aah, aah; Aah, aah, aah; aah, aah, aah; Aaahhh,” getting higher and higher, already in whistle range by the seventh “aah”), was called Emotions. That could be wrong, but I’ll check it after typing this. Anyway, listen to that, and see if you think Mitch can pull off that note. Lemme just check I have the right song...

    Yes, Mitch is definitely a problem 😁 Totally addictive and immensely talented - as they all are! PTX is such fun, their covers are amazing and their original music is wonderful as well. As others have said, it is Pen-ta-tonix, in reference to the five part pentatonic scale. Two covers that I think really show off their talents are Kiiara’s ‘Gold’ and ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’, but honestly, you could pick anything they’ve done. Thanks for the fun reaction!

    For another DJ mix style song, see their medley of Daft Punk. The arrangement won a grammy. Matching keys and tempos was really tricky.
    Matt Sallee is the bass in this song, but before 2018 Avi Kaplan was the bass. The bass is often doing bass guitar, but also integrating with Kevin doing bass parts of the percussion/rhythm track. But also some leads.
    Kevin Olusola is the beatboxer and occasionally plays cello at the same time (e.g. Say Something, Radioactive, Papaoutai). He sings tenor when he isn't beatboxing.
    Scott Hoying is the baritone, but gets up to mid-tenor and also covers bass when the bass is on a lead. Kirstin Maldonado is mezzo soprano, which is a high alto. She has a lot of warmth in her voice for this range. Mitch Grassi is a very high tenor while still having a very good low tenor voice.
    Besides Daft Punk, they have an original EDM song called Love Again with very strong and strong and unusual synth percussion from Kevin.
    They did a very solid version of Bohemian Rhapsody that was recommended by Brian May. Massive drumming.
    They do a whole bunch of Evolution of ... songs (Music, Beyonce, Michael Jackson, Ariana Grande, ...) as well as fun things like 100 songs in 10 minutes. They do some of these live. They do most of their songs live.
    One of their most fun and motivational songs is their old concert opener - Sing!

    Really enjoyed your reaction! You're right, I think - a background as a DJ gives you a unique perspective on what they do, so thanks!
    Subbing hoping to follow you on an epic journey! How you approach their huge catalog depends on what catches your interest...here's a ...maybe not brief, but concise(?!) roadmap for you:
    * Hallelujah - over 600 million views, their most watched video
    * Sing Off season 3 episodes - added a talented bass and beatboxer to a trio of high school friends, basically met and auditioned, you can see how they started great, learned as they went, and won (watch the judges comments!!)
    * Somebody That I Used to Know - early posting as they tried to make it on their own after the recording contract they won was canceled because there "wasn't enough of an audience for a capella"
    * Daft Punk - won them their first of 3 Grammy awards (search "private performance" and compare it to the official video - it's really all them!) Yes they can do EDM!
    * Can't Hold Us - they can rap, too!
    * "Evolution of" - take your pick! MJ, Rihanna, Beyonce, etc
    * La La Latch - they "mash up" even better than they "medley"
    * Sing - from first original album, shows their appreciation of their fans, can't sit still when you listen!
    * Popspring 2016 - 3 other originals plus Evolution of MJ live, they were on fire that night! Well-mixed and mic'd
    * Imagine - shows their heart, just what you need in this season of politics to lift your spirit back up
    * Bohemian Rhapsody - they kill with their own style but honor originals!!
    * Mary Did You Know, Amazing Grace - their Christmas songs are gorgeous
    * Oh Come All Ye Faithful - best ever version, pays homage to beatboxer Kevin Olusola's Nigerian heritage
    * New Rules x Are You That Somebody - first mash up with new bass (only member change, the others change styles like socks ♥) and it's fabulous
    * Coffee in Bed - from second original album, fairly recent, shows they grow and change but keep getting better!
    Collabs - all great! You'll see one you like :-)
    That's not brief, sorry, but it gives you a little overview

    They are indeed beat-boxing. No instruments. All voices. What you see is what you get/hear. They may be the premier a capella group in the USA today. Or maybe in the world. If you want to REALLY get your mind blown, try their Daft Punk medley, which show you their range. But just as impressive is their versatility, because they have 3 Grammies for 3 different genres of music. If you are astounded by your first exposure, start exploring to see their range. You will not believe your ears - but it is all true. Further, they don't release a video if they can't perform it live. So watch for some of their videos that were made at a live show. THAT will tell you the truth of this group.
    Enjoy, sir, and look around PTX Official to see what else they can do.

    He uses his voice to make the bass guitar sound you are hearing.
