Did it again Doug - Rippin through another classic VH song that's not as hard as I figured. Love the way you make the lesson quick and easy. Great job, thank you!👍
YOu might like some of my old concert photos, there are some VH shots from days gone by among them, I started bringing my camera to shows pretty early on, when I was around 16 www.flickr.com/photos/61260789@N04/albums/72157626277209145
I just bought like 9 pedals and a mini power brick to play through my 5150 iii 50 watt head and got the tone right off the bat with 3 of 'em and one of the riffs that came out quickly was this one but only did the first power chord part...came here to Doug to learn the rest of it!I'm waiting for my 5150 guitar to get here so I'll be ready to nail it on that one ! I ALWAYS loved the little clickity click thing!
Ah yes , slayer, when my band played a gig with them in ,I think 1983 or 4 ,they were wearing more spandex then diamond Dave ever wore ,and head bands , eyeliner,I did not know what to think because they sounded like they were trying to play Judas Priest really fast and sloppy . Well, that my story , and I'm sticking to it !
Thanks Doug, I have always wanted to learn this song. tablature just doesn't cut it, and your lesson has helped me greatly! It all makes sense to me now!!!!
I love your infectious ENERGY at playing the hottest EVH riffs - and a great lesson to boot. I never saw how to play the little two noted parts starting around 7:30. KILLAH! Thank you Sir!
Brother Doug I can't thank you enough for showing me the right way to play this one! Been playing it wrong for years! Your awesome buddy!! Love your vids!!🎸🎸🎸
Thank you for the post,I really like the way you use chord names and notes to get the basics of it. Some people use string and fret numbers and it confuses the hell out of me.
Cool stuff. Finally getting me another Flanger after a few decades of not using one-so I can put in those nice touches here and there, like Ed. So cool to listen to the isolated tracks and catch all the little things that can now be heard more clearly. Just a little too much delay in parts, getting in the way. Just back it off a bit. Great job! 😝🤘🏻🇺🇸🎸
I have seen Eddie play this dozens of times ,and he plays it using different chords BUT, when I try and play it ,it is ,more like the way you do ,as in the chords ,either way ,you come out with the same thing! Thanks for throwing this out here ,because everyone else plays it different , except you and I ,so thanks!
yeah it was,and a looong time ago, keep up the good work, my guitar teacher and friend was Randy Rhoads,,he taught me some very important stuff,I wish I would have paid more attention but who knew! Anyway,I love that neck on your star, is it an EVH neck with custom paint or ....? And is that an X2N pick up? Cool guitar, that is the only one I don't have yet because I have 4 Star guitars already, but I gotta get it to complete the set! Keep rockin' Doug!
Doug Steele it looks very cool! When I finally get that one,I'll probably just through a Jackson neck on it,I have a few of them,It should look good,or.....just put a strat type .
@DougFCKNSteele Yep me too - I think we're about the same age - early 40's? Anyway, I probably started playing because of the first couple VH albums. Learned a ton just by listening to EVH, and was fortunate enough to have some great teachers (studied with Al Pitrelli from TSO for many years and even studied with John Petrucci for about a year or so when he was giving lessons out of his folks house here on Long Island) to help guide me in the right direction. Keep rockin' Mr. Steele!! : )
Im with ya man, watching vids like your helps me learn songs twice as fast. I use tabs for little details and whatnot. Songsterr is a cool tool for learning tricky or fast phrases.
This is such a great lesson...been trying to figure out some of those parts for 20 years...yes, like the harmonics at the 6th fret...Awesome and Thank u..!
+hairyboosh Yeah man, glad you notice. Lessons are about 30minutes long then I cull the absolute fuck outta them. Jokes, asides, whatever, I try to streamline them.
Dude great video👍 I’ve been doing the clickty click different for decades!!! It sounds the same, but I can’t wait to try that, thanks! I’ve been doing it on ( don’t have guitar around me right now) around the 11th fret on low E and D. I dig your presentation too, you’re hilarious! Keep rockin👍🎸
Amazing to think evh was doing this shit back then. I remember him exploding in all the guitar magazines. And ya he sounded awesome but to see how he was doing it...Definately ahead of his time
Doug you fucking ROCK ! man. You have no idea how thankful I am to you.... Finally , being able to fret those fucking harmonics that drove me insane for so many years. I am trying to find the right words for you.........hummmmmmm????? YOU FUCKING ROCK !!!! Yeah , that is it !!! Thanx !!!..
I'm kind of surprised when you said you never knew what the harmonics noises were - I mean ya in the 80s we had no idea but its in every tab out there! Tricky to make it sound just right though. I use an MXR script phaser, Boss DS-1 Dist, and a MXR Compressor for this song. Im just now practicing it though. Even Ed's easy stuff is hard to play just right.
. I LOVE that Guitar! it's my fav of all of Eddies Guitars Where did you get the parts to build it? Great playing BTW. On Fire is my favorite tune. Rock on Brother! G-Dog
I stand corrected :) The harmonics are spot on dude.. damn..... I've always played it just a little differently (same picking) but after slowing it down, the high harmonic is exact. I think you could get away with playing either way without most people noticing though. My (old) way lands the high note on an E harmonic and the correct way is an E#. I never noticed it until I saw your killer tutorial and slowed it down to compare. Thanks man. E|--------------5---| B|-------------------| G|-------------------| D|-------------------| A|-------------------| E|--5--4--5--------|
@DougFCKNSteele That'd be sweet! I wouldn't mind you doing ANY PG lesson. But I don't know if I could play that fast haha! I've seen your Dean video and I know that you can...you pick like a machine gun!...one day I will too, hopefully
Doug Steele You get around or I do lol. I noticed you on the Joyo JW-01 demo. Is it safe to say one can put the receiver into the guitar input of a pedal board? Thanks man.
Wasn't trying to be a smart ass. Since you were in the demo, I believed the JW-01 was legit, particularly when I saw you play at the end of the block lol. I may have a chance to pick one up at a discount and just wanted to make sure it would work in a pedal chain. I'm down with the JW-01. Thanks for the past demo man. Anyone else, I would've been skeptical.
Dear Mr. Steele, your covers and lessons are AMAZING! I know you are partial to Eddie, but is there any possible way you could do a David Lee lesson for Drop in the Bucket? That song is so filthy and Jason's guitar work on it is genius as usual! If anyone could pull that off it'd be you :) Pwetty Pweeeeese!
love it!!! the flanger sounds killer!!! dude what kind of Star guitar is that???? you have it made??? I have 2 Stars but they're not real Charvels. I play left-handed but with it strung right handed. I can keep up with ya pretty good on the VH stuff but you destroy pretty much everyone on your other shredding!!! lol. That star-pics footage was some serious soloing imo. I was like holy-shizzz!!! lol. But yeah bro just wanted to hear your take on the guitar in this lesson. I have pretty much nailed On Fire thanx to you bro. Take care. \m/
Hello!! Yes, star guitar was made, there's even clips of it being painted. With flanger and phaser settings, I have no fucking clue as to what I'm doing, I just spin buttons until I feel it's in the ball park. EVH phaser settings especially. I have an HD500, I'm going to try and get the EVH tones going on there as well. Wish me luck.
6th fret? Yeah, I always knew that. Sincerely, nobody
Ha ha ha, oh Johnny!! Doozie, that one.
Did it again Doug - Rippin through another classic VH song that's not as hard as I figured. Love the way you make the lesson quick and easy. Great job, thank you!👍
Such a great song, ha it really is. Damn that first album came out of nowhere and blew me away.
Yep, same..I got the album on Xmas..When I heard Eruption, time as I knew it shifted.
YOu might like some of my old concert photos, there are some VH shots from days gone by among them, I started bringing my camera to shows pretty early on, when I was around 16

Killer, looking now.
Holy shit!!You took a pic of Frank??!!
Yeah, that was a happy accident! My friends and I were able to get backstage after a show in NYC, crazy but true.
Well this i what im working on today. Thank you, RIP EVH \m/
me too....I usd to play it years ago and now its time to relearn it. RIP EVH
Dude, watching this in 2022 and I appreciate it! Excellent point about having an angled finger to hit those harmonics on the 6th.
Nice! I saw him open with this in '81 Fair Warning tour. It was so intense and heavy. Add 10k watts and our ears bled!
Hell Yeah!👊
You could actually consider this ONE of the first Thrash Riffs...during the screaming FIRE part, it actually sounds like SLAYER.
well there you go..
How did your set go over?
It went good ! I think it was at Radio city in the Anaheim area.
Rad, y'all film it??!!
Thanks Doug,
I have always wanted to learn this song. tablature just doesn't cut it, and your lesson has helped me greatly! It all makes sense to me now!!!!
Playing is superb as well as the lesson. The touch of humor here and there is a great touch while learning.
Thanks Doug! You're a good, enthusiastic teacher! You just showed me how to do three tricks I wanted to learn for the longest time!
That's great news!!
Ty Sargent cheers rawk God!!
Really great job! Not overly detailed but not rushed, really like that.
Thanks. No one wants to hear incessant talking if it's not required. Editing takes hours.
9.5 years later TY. I've been playing too much Jerry Garcia lately. It's hard to name my favorite EVH solo, but Push comes to shove is right up there.
Love your enthusiasm, man! thanks for the lesson!
Rick Hankins anytime rock god!!!
Just now seeing your videos man. Great playing and no screwing around. 👍👍👍👍
Thanks.
Thanks! My Favorite Van Halen song. Im so surprised there are so many people who don't know of it.
Thank you for the post,I really like the way you use chord names and notes to get the basics of it.
Some people use string and fret numbers and it confuses the hell out of me.
Very good, you got a lot of the subtle riffs and tricks, and there's a ton in this song!
I play this everyday thanks to you.
Great job! 😝🤘🏻🇺🇸🎸
… and it’s more likely that Ed did use upstrokes on those high E&B stabs throughout. Plus, it’s a good habit to get into.
I have seen Eddie play this dozens of times ,and he plays it using different chords BUT, when I try and play it ,it is ,more like the way you do ,as in the chords ,either way ,you come out with the same thing! Thanks for throwing this out here ,because everyone else plays it different , except you and I ,so thanks!

schaller hot stuff, bought it for $50.
Doug Steele it looks very cool! When I finally get that one,I'll probably just through a Jackson neck on it,I have a few of them,It should look good,or.....just put a strat type .
Coo, neck is reverse strat headstock, 22 frets, got it off warmoth along with the Floyd.

Well that's cool? How are you?
Love your enthusiasm! Great video.

you make it look easy, great lesson
I'm impressed. And that takes a lot!
Wow, man. Classic VH. Great stuff, Doug.
Excellent no bullshit straight to the point. 👍
+hairyboosh Yeah man, glad you notice. Lessons are about 30minutes long then I cull the absolute fuck outta them. Jokes, asides, whatever, I try to streamline them.
@DougFCKNSteele Cool! Are you gonna do stuff from Back for the Attack? I've always wanted to learn the Heaven Sent solo....Lynch is a beast!
Cheers bro, spread the word.
Damn, you're awesome! Thanks for a brief and cohesive lesson.
thanks for showing the harmonics at the start. i never could get that right
Same, we owe it all to Jimi..
I got around to learning this and it's 100% down to you. Thanks Doug :)
Thanks, I rush a bit, but I like to get it out there quickly, ya know? Rawk!!
Great lesson! Thanks for the video. I'm diggin your tone! What are your amp settings?
Dude great video👍 I’ve been doing the clickty click different for decades!!! It sounds the same, but I can’t wait to try that, thanks! I’ve been doing it on ( don’t have guitar around me right now) around the 11th fret on low E and D. I dig your presentation too, you’re hilarious! Keep rockin👍🎸
Cheers!! Send me a vid or something.
Dammit I refuse to change my air guitar moves for this song
Doug Steele, quote: "Here's the 'click-i-tee-click part." Very funny, and yet, an accurate analogy and or description.
VH stuff is always so much fun to play, thanks for the lesson......the action looks pretty low on the guitar....and what's the string guage?
I love to hear One Foot Out The Door dude!!
Keep on rockin'!
That helped a lot! You rock. Love that guitar sound you got going.....
Amazing to think evh was doing this shit back then. I remember him exploding in all the guitar magazines. And ya he sounded awesome but to see how he was doing it...Definately ahead of his time
He brought so many techniques to the table. Bad ass!!
Well done, lots of enthusiasm combined with great form. Be fun to put you and he side by side, I'd pay to see that.

Thank you very much !!
@DougFCKNSteele Cool. Is the pick a DiMarzio? It actually looks like a old Bill Lawrence type. Looks great.
pisser dude, you nailed this, I am gonna git to the woodshed and learn this shit up.....bad ass tune
All good brother.
@guitargod1598 No issues at all. Now go get one!!

@DougFCKNSteele For sure. I'll check it out.
Is this standard tuning?
@DougFCKNSteele That'd be sweet! I wouldn't mind you doing ANY PG lesson. But I don't know if I could play that fast haha! I've seen your Dean video and I know that you can...you pick like a machine gun!...one day I will too, hopefully
@SkyNett Cheers Mr Nett, I grew up on ed, and in a way he taught me shitloads.
Thumbs UP, dude! Awesome!
@Bark3rd I hate TAB unless it's absolutely necessary. Even then I'll still try with the ear.
Doug, you're the VH dissection messiah. Can't thank you enough.
Thanks man. I try not to fuck around.
Doug Steele You get around or I do lol. I noticed you on the Joyo JW-01 demo. Is it safe to say one can put the receiver into the guitar input of a pedal board? Thanks man.
rock biter Actually, I think the JW-01 is legit. I no longer work there, but I will say if you're gonna buy guitar gear, get top of the line shit.
Wasn't trying to be a smart ass. Since you were in the demo, I believed the JW-01 was legit, particularly when I saw you play at the end of the block lol.
