I studied Art and Art History in the early 70's at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. I wrote a final dissertation on Las Meninas. I studied this masterpiece for a month in Madrid and the Prado.
I often visited the National Gallery when I lived in London.
There is so much that could be said about the Rokeby Venus.
I remember standing between Velazquez's portrait of Philip IV and the Rokeby Venus. Velazques had the almost impossible job of painting a flattering Portrait of Philip IV. There is not only the Habsburg “jaw” but also the almost putrefying skin. All that Habsburg in breeding probably brought that on.
The contrast with the Rokeby Venus is extreme. The sensuality of the colour and paintwork is unbelievable.

I'm no art critic, but I have a feeling something outstanding is missing from his list of physical reactions.

I love the Rokeby Venus, I cannot understand how anyone can attack such a beautiful painting.😢. They really need to protect it with bullet proof glass against any more vandals.

Its critical to understand also that there was no photography at that time....which makes it even more remarkable.

Diego’s first portrait of Philip IV killed. Just like a stand up nailing his very first appearance on Carson’s Tonight Show. I just love Valasque
