** update: Connect the camera RCA/wire run from the rear of the car, to the 12+ camera wire NOT the trigger wire at the display **
If your BMW didn't come with some of the latest technologies like a backup camera, android auto or Carplay, or even the small 6.5inch display, this will fix those troubles.
This display is a massive upgrade over the default tiny 6.5 display and even better than the OEM 10.25 as well.
Required parts and tools:
AvinUSA 12.3inch display for the BMW X1
avinusa.com/12...
T-20 torx driver
plastic trim tool kit
pliers
wire taps (x2)
zip ties
Nice to have:
Good lighting

Watched the whole video... knowing it wasn't for my car! 😜 EXCELLENT production quality and instruction; TOP NOTCH!!! Thank you. THEN... I went to their website... they have versions for SO many cars, even my E84!!!! DEFINITELY now on my "to purchase" list. Thanks again!
Happy to help!
The best walk-through of this type on YT, if not for this video I'd not feel secure about doing the install myself.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge mate! 👏🏻👏🏻
Cheers from Brazil!
Thank you so much!
@@BMWDIYGuy is this the same on 2016 model?
@phoenixteague952 likely yes, check their website to be sure
You don't need to tap into the bulb. Thats the old fashioned method. theres a dedicated 12v output on the screen harness for the camera. You only need the yellow rca + red trigger wire and its easy.
@@CardenasBlack i appreciate the feedback and info!
One of the best video I watched so far .so detailed and easy to understand. Can I add a back up camera to my existing small screen?
Thank you! You can yes, if you install the MMI unit from Bimmertech. I have an install video out for that as well.
Pretty solid video, really impressed with the phenomenal detailed walkthrough. I am preparing to install a screen on my X1 that did not come with iDrive OEM and also will add a backup camera so this helped a lot.
I am just uncertain as to why my kit comes with a speaker and a mic? Doesn't the car already have a mic since it has BT for calls only? Additionaly I am also adding the iDrive control knob and have no clue where to plug it.
Thanks for the nice video!
Thanks! The iDrive controller is just the bigger knob right as you should have one already? The big speaker and mic, about 99% of the time isnt installed candidly as if folks are going to take calls etc, they are going to do it through Auto/Carplay anyway. I normally skip it myself.
@@BMWDIYGuy Thanks for your reply. Ended up doing the install and winging most of the stuff. All in all it worked good but I did install the MIC and Extra Speaker but their quality is very mediocre. I didb't want my calls to pass through that speaker so I will disconnect once I do the backup camera.
For the camera, I saw your update in the description where you say to use the head unit's +12V rather than the onr at the tailight. What is the reasoning behind this practice if you don't mind me asking?
Anyways, many thanks once again!
@@mayonaisesaladejamaismalade I found that power source to be more reliable after I had some issues with the other setup. Happy to help!
This is an amazing video and I'm about to order one of these for my wife's car.
However, their website is a bit overwhelming with the add-ons.
Do you mind sharing the exact specs for what you ordered?
Thanks again for putting all of this together!
Email me, easier to answer you than way.
@@BMWDIYGuy Just sent, hopefully it comes through ok!
Great video! If your old 6.5" has no defects, will you sell it to me? I am looking for a replacement, as my original display has a large area with dead pixels. Thank you!
No it's perfect.. shoot me an email
What size screen would recommend for a 2015 435i F32? Also do yiu recommend going wirh Xtron units?
@@DarrellGilmore06 i do like the 12.3s and never worked with the xtron yet
Tha k you sooo much for the video. Helped me do 2 of x1’s. Video is very helpful and in detail.
My only question is after installing and following the steps when i turn the car i get auto pdf failure error for 3 seconds and disappears. Done the same screen on another car and dont get the error. Cant seem to find out what it is. If you please help on on that to understand what that could be please.
Can't say I have seen that before... may some app association on the android side?
Hi, thanks for the video. Question, what does the red cable on the yellow RCA do and where did you connect it?
@cymun84 that should be the trigger wire.. check the video about connecting that to the backup light at the tail and trigger wire in the new wiring harness.
I still haven’t installed the radio but my x1 has the camera do I still need to installed the camera that the radio brings ?
@@chrisbatista41 no, your oem camera will work the same
@@BMWDIYGuy thank you
My 2013 X1 didn't come with a screen just a little storage compartment....can i add a screen?
@@boolanny maybe.. it will depend on how it fits into that space. I retrofitted a screen into an older X3 that didn't have idrive, so this likely would work.
I just installed an Android screen and a rear camera, everything works fine except when I engage reverse gear and I remove it, the screen remains stuck on the camera and I can't go back to android mode even if I press the back button.
Any help please
@tahakbail730 that is odd.. something about the trigger wire maybe? Camera setting maybe? Can't say I have seen that before
I just installed the 10.25 version thanks to this video! I am having an issue though, the Bluetooth connection was working but now it's not and has been super frustrating. Ive been screwing around for hours trying to get it to work and nothing is helping. One odd thing is that when I choose "fsc car kit" on my phone it will only let me choose call audio only. When I try to select the audio option the switch toggles off immediately. Tried resetting the Bluetooth settings/memory on my phone and still no luck. Does this sound familiar to you at all? I have a 2018 X1, no aux input in the car, so I left the aux connected in the wiring harness as per your instructions. I'm so lost and incredibly frustrated! Thanks for any help you might be able to provide!
I wish I could say I had a quick fix for you or had seen this before. Something changed.. if BT on your phone is working everywhere else, then easy to cross that off the list. Then it comes down to the display hardware or software.. you can guess software didn't change, so that leans me towards hardware maybe. I would also reach out to the manufacturer (avin?) for support and see if they have a suggestion. New install, so if you did have a hardware failure you could get it replaced?
@@BMWDIYGuy Hey thanks for the quick reply. I reached out to AVIN and they got back to me pretty quickly thankfully. I think maybe I was mistaken that the bluetooth connection was working previously and maybe it was playing through the oem Bluetooth. Avin said I have to hook up the 3.5mm aux in the harness to a USB adapter included in the bag and then run it to my oem USB port. Seemed like not a bad solution initially, however the adapter is fairly large and has to sit in the center console pocket under the armrest and then the aux cable has to run out and over the top of the storage area permanently before it gets tucked back under the center console/tunnel trim. This is starting to feel pretty MacGyver. I might ultimately go with Bimmertechs MMI pro with my poopy little 6.5 inch screen at this point if they don't also require the aux to USB converter. Super disappointing because the bigger screen is really nice, but it feels like there's always going to be headaches 😒
followed to a t....only issue is my head unit won't come out enough to access the back side of the unit...harness wiring has no slack. 😥
So your oem head unit wont come forward? Sounds like its hung up on something for sure, and maybe someone has got in there before? I haven't had one hang up like that before.
@@BMWDIYGuy I found on one of the forums a posting from one of the service manuals and it says that this is due to the cable harness being clipped into the structure during manufacture and this will need releasing to get the head unit out, which requires removing the center console as well.
@dcc7470 oh wow!!! I haven't seen that in any models so far.. ouch!!!!
Hi, one question about radio capabilities on this new unit: Does it support Radio AF (Alternative Frequencies). From my experience these china units do not support it. So if you drive outside the city and depends on the signal coverage you change broadcast stations, your analog radio should automatically change it and not losing signal.
@ivanminev4899 this unit doesn't have a radio antenna, and FM is from the oem head unit.
Great video I have a 2016 BMW x1 and the android screen how do I code it so that the 6.5 original display takes up the whole space?
You will need an app like Bimmercode, and that your car already has the variables to change.
@@BMWDIYGuy great following your instructions. I installed the screen on Sunday. it has different screen sizes in the android part and some of them seem to fit okay on the screen. So maybe they’ve changed it.
@@Solosheep Fantastic and great news for sure! Congrats!
Does Avin know you posted this, I dont think so and I hope they are giving you something. I just ordered the 12.3, I have had the 10.25 for 3 years and decided to try an upgrade for a bit smoother experience I hope. Great vid, thank you! Do you have any Vid or can you make one on how to wire up the front camera for power and through the front to the head unit? I have an F25 2014 X3. Appreciate your time you took to do this. Avin really should put this on their page, they have very old info still. I have had audio issues so going to try and not use my extension this round and see how it sounds. Thanks again! Take care!
I have yet to do the front camera so I wish I had something to share. I also coded the car using Bimmercode as if it had the oem 10.25 screen, so the original car idrive is now full screen.
@@BMWDIYGuy thanks, I have the bimmercode if needed, should get my unit later this week. Wish you where in the Midwest! I have the DVR and the front camera, but dont want to mess with the power on my own. Thanks.
What is the correct name and where did you order from?
@@natashawhite8415 the link is in the description
I just installed the 12.3, I like it, the only issue is sometimes the bluetooth does not pick up and I have to turn it off on my phone and back on. Still trying to determine why... It is worth it for sure though!
Maybe a bit off track, but have a 2014 X1 i28 that the info screen needs to be replaced due to overheating and working sporadically. Is this a tough job for someone that is not a professional BMW Cert Tech to do and should I upgrade it or just replace with a like item? Loved this video and the detail!
Its really not hard, and candidly would upgrade while I am there anyway. The OEM screens are widly overpriced for what they are, so upgrade too. 8)
Great video! Would love to know what you did to code the OE display to 10.25"
Shoot me an email and I will share the info.
@@BMWDIYGuy Sent. Thanks!
@@BMWDIYGuy Hi, thanks for the video, incredibly helpful. I would be curious if you managed to code the OEM 10.25" display and if it worked with the aftermarket one.
@mikedockal8978 For this particular car, sadly no as the base code didn't support that.
On your video you havent showed how to connect rear camera to head unit wiring as it got yellow plug + 1 red wire can let me know were do you connect red wire to
@AlStan682 at the display wiring harness, the red off the RCA plug connects to the trigger wire.
Where can I order the GPS splitter?
You can order directly from Avin
where can i buy the unit for 2016 BMW X1?
Link is in the description
Haven't watched video yet but do you retain steering wheel controls?
You do, yes.
Thanks so much for the video - really informative 👍🏻…
Can I ask, how did the audio side of things go, did you need to adjust any settings and how was the quality of sound? Did audio from Apple CarPlay feed through okay? Any improvements to the EQ side of things? Many thanks!
Audio is great and mostly ignore the iDrive sound now honestly. I set iDrive audio to flat settings and sounds good
@@BMWDIYGuy That’s really helpful, thank you for the update. I found your video from the X1 forum, great to watch. Last question! Audio from Apple CarPlay passes through okay? No need to use the additional AUX cable you mentioned and route to under the arm rest and replace the original AUX? Thanks so much!
@samharries5057 awesome, glad you found the post! So in this case no additional aux cable but in some cases you will need to run it
@@BMWDIYGuy Fantastic! Thanks so much 😀
Does the rear camera support dynamic lines in reverse or they're static?
They are dynamic
Is this the same on 2016 model?
Very likely yes.
Just ordered/installed a new screen on my 2016 x1 and everything works besides the volume controls when in CarPlay. If I go back to the factory display I’m able to control the volume again but lose the function going back into CarPlay. Any advice.
THAT is a weird one.. cant say I have seen that behavior before, and the controls working everywhere else makes me thing the install is fine. Maybe something odd about that specific display unit? Definitely check with the vendor you bought it from too.
Do you have a unit for a 2013 x5?
Definitely check Avin's website.
Great tutorial!
Thank you!
Awesome!
Thank you!
👍
Thanks!
i prefer the original OEM 10" display
I went back and forth on what size for the display..
